Those EPL figures on SBS pretty much confirms that something is off with their ratings.

Just updating Clinton"s post little for the Perth game..... still amazes me how SBS only get 70% or there abouts of the Fox ratings ..
If you ever want to compare the two coverage's ... listen to the Fox call and the SBS call of MC's first goal...
=====12-13 13-14 14-15 15-16 16-17 30K === 0 ==== 0 ==== 1 ==== 2 ==== 0 40K === 0 ==== 0 ==== 2 ==== 1 ==== 0 50K === 2 ==== 3 ==== 1 ==== 3 ==== 2 60K === 1 ==== 4 ==== 2 ==== 7 ==== 2 70K === 5 ==== 1 ==== 2 ==== 5 ==== 2 80K === 0 ==== 2 ==== 5 ==== 2 ==== 4 90K === 1 ==== 5 ==== 1 ==== 0 ==== 2 100K+ = 8 ==== 5 ==== 3 ==== 0 ==== 4 125K+ = 2 ==== 0 ==== 0 ==== 0 ==== 3 150K+ = 1 ==== 0 ==== 1 ==== 0 ==== 0 Avg fox ratings to Round 4 12-13: 95.0k 13-14: 86.5K 14-15: 84.4K 15-16: 62.9K 16-17: 92.6K
Shows how bad last season was.

Just on ratings, and the Fox / SBS relationship and the next media deal. If we go back to prior to the last media deal, the accepted wisdom was that by going to a FTA station would increase Fox ratings overall as the FTA station would create a broader interest. Accordingly SBS were near gifted there share. My understanding was 40 million per year for four years, 35 million in cash, and 5 million in advertising. SBS paid 5 million for one match per week, plus all finals, and Socceroos, and incurred no match broadcastings expense, Fox paid all these costs. If we broadly assume the broadcasting costs to be over 140 odd matches plus Socceroos was say 40 million. Fox paid 70 million and SBS paid 5 million. For this SBS could have taken the positive Fox call, but where expected to promote and be positive about the A-League. We all saw what they produced. This brings up a new question was the logic of being on FTA would lift Fox ratings wrong or has the SBS broadcast not connected with the broader community. If the latter then a FTA station should lift Fox ratings.

+xFox Ratings for V on FOX SPORTS 4 - 83,000. Very solid, would have been <70k in previous seasons IMO.

Interesting post from skeptic in 2010/11 rating thread: "Had a quick look at the regular seasons ratings of 09/10 & 10/11. 09/10 had 23 games rate 60k or higher. 10/11 had 2 games rate 60k or higher. Not all info is available, but it shouldn't be far from accurate. Aggregate audience should be higher with the increase in telecast games but will be tempered by the decrease in game ratings." http://forum.insidesport.com.au/940310/ALeaguePaytvRatings?PageIndex=5

But by season 12 we had many more. If so we are making making a lot of progress and seem to be recovering from the Big Bash onslaught. This bit will be interesting to see what happens when the Big Bash starts.... Cricket on the weekend starts but its always been the BB that has hurt in recebt years. BTW Clinton thanks for the PM and the work you did well done, do you have those figures as we move through the season as it will be interesting to see if we can match or better 2012 or the ADP years

The two key factors that seem to have the most powerful influence on tv audiences is simply this.
1. Marquee players
2. Expansion (or at the very least talk of expansion)
Which is why the FFA is targeting these two items hard. First with their super marquee fund plan (ok it has only worked so far for cahill. But i image ratings would have been higher had MV managed to get Essien. Shame really) and now they appear to be serious about expansion. Or at least talking about it.
One thing is for sure. If they can get both tthings right, the marketability part of our game should come naturally after it.

To me, the 2 biggest reasons as to why we have great increases in TV ratings are; 1. Marquee Players It's very simple, these players make headlines, well before the start of the season, which in turn increases TV viewers. Even if these players don't have great seasons, by the time people discover that, just the lure of watching them has already lured viewers in at the very start. This is why these type of players are very important, and they also do half the marketing and advertising for you. There's a reason why the MLS still has designated or marquee players after 20 years, and they're actually attracting bigger names and better players every year. Our 2 markets are very similar and we need to learn from them when it comes to marquee players. 2. Actually marketing and advertising the competition This is marketing 101, yes everyone or at least most people would know that the A-league is on every year, but it's not until you advertise that and you hammer that message home that it actually gets to some people. As I said in point 1, marquee players are great because they do some of the advertising for you, think of ADP and now Cahill. But it's also no coincidence that those 2 seasons, when those 2 players come out and started playing here, the advertising has gone through the roof, the FFA has realised that advertising is a necessity. And in turn the TV ratings have been the best ever on Fox. It's really not rocket science. Hopefully they do that every year, regardless who is playing in the A-league. In previous years, when the doom merchants have been out and about spruiking the death of the competition, FFA has skimped on a marketing budget, and that's just compounded the situation. There's a reason why both the AFL and the NRL both have huge marketing budgets, and spend millions of $$$ spruiking and advertising their competitions and their brands every year. You cant afford to stand still, otherwise you go backwards in what is a very competitive domestic sports market.

If they can get both tthings right, the marketability part of our game should come naturally after it. Yet there are or were people here adamant that ratings wouldnt be affected by the so called gimicky marquee rules. That the casuals would tune out as soon as they saw a few mins of cahill. Yet the opposite is true. The years that have had the highest ratings were all during the adp days or now. Funny that. Now imagine if there were 3 or 4 other clubs that had actual marketable players like an Essien, Drogba and Gerrard all at once in the league spread across a few cities.our ratings would be off the charts comparatively speaking. Adding on third party sponsors the actual cost to the clubs or ffa wouldnt be more than 8-10 million and the return qould be well.worth it for the game overall. FFAs small.investment in Cahill.is paying off in spades and as predicted the league as a whole will be better off come announcement of new broadcast deal or at least be much improved to what would be signed had ratings stayed like they were last year. And now as predicted people are tuning in to Melb City for their pure quality even without Cahill. Cahill was the lead magnet so to speak and people are now getting sold on the way they play and are tuning in to watch. Anyhow great great start to the season ratings wise, now its just a matter of seeing how much we are going to be impacted now that bbl is about to start. We'll bviously see a noticeable drop but hopefully not as large as other years.

Did anyone say people wouldn't watch?
The main argument is FFA deciding who plays for which club and how much money they will give to one club and not another.

The reasons why ratings have improved are absolutely and mind numbingly obvious. This is why I and many others have been so critical of FFA over the years. Last years performance by FFA was beyond belief.Zero promotion, zero marquees, dirty laundry aired in public and the list goes on.Blame it on Gallop or the Board or the CEO,but I still can't believe supposedly intelligent and wealthy people can be so dumb. What has happened this year ,should have happened last year.It should have happened the year before. The only thing that has changed over last year is the impending new media rights deal.At the start of this season clubs were no more sustainable than last year.Yet now the mantra has changed. But is this all smoke and mirrors? When the media deal is done can we trust FFA to follow through with expansion, marketing and marquees? Or is all this a carefully orchestrated plan to maximise the media deal and then go into hibernation again to make clubs more sustainable?I hope not.But who can trust these people?

It's a mon night and not a holiday outside of Vic.So another good result. Remember its vs the NUX ,that lately are worse than CCM. I wonder how much TV rights for Fox would be worth,if they could lock in 80k for sat,sun and mon nights and 100k for Fri?

There are plenty and i mean plenty of people that are against the whole marquee concept. Just go back the dozens of pages and you will see people going on about it and how silly it is that clubs would spend in those areas when they could just spend down at grass roots which is great but doesn't bring in the coin at the top.

Wookie Great stuff as usual mate, and very quick this week as well ... As a matter of interest how hard is it for you using your data bases to break down the years you have records into the averages for each round. Sorta like this Season averages == ===== Sea 12/13 ===sea 13/14 ==== sea 14/15 ==== sea 15/16 === sea 16/17 Rd 1 ... matches 1 -9 Rd 2 ... matches 10 - 18 Rd 3 ... matches 19 - 27 Its not perfect but is a guide to the impact of BBL and cricket and the early rounds of the NRL and AFL . I just have a feeling this year the drop will not be as high as in previous year, although it could be my heart talking not my brain.

Im already working on a graph for that - im sure ive got one lying around somewhere already. Great thing aboout this time of the year is i can focus on the A-league side of things for a month or two before the BBL starts. So if you have requests go nuts, the timing couldnt be better.
