Just goes to show what 100 years of being on commercial tv does for your sport.

Imagine if 10k more turned up. Would the rating be 49k?

shithouse ratings yet again for a Victory game no surprises as it was going up against Australian Open Tennis at the sametime atm as that i was not surprised seeing the ratings for this game and other games during this period of the season would also suffer.

If AL were on a decent channel with decent promotion we would eclipse the tennis imo.

Hopefully FFA will get the message within the next six years that a ten team competition gets boring ,when teams keep playing each other over and over and over.We need more teams.

Even if we had a 16 team competition with more derbies , this time of the year we would still take a hammering in the ratings. You just cant compete against 50 years of tennis and cricket tradtition. It will be incremental steps for the game. As long as memberships crowds and ratings continue to improve we are in a good place, and we are .

Its not just the number of teams, but the amount of times they play each other. 3 is too many I would love having a 12 team comp, with a h/a series and only 22 round comp. The improved quality of the league will mean more people will watch more often, rather than get boards by the middle of the season

Not great really. Don't understand why the FFA or likely Fox Sports would push for sucha late start and have it firmly overlap with the tennis. Fucking dumb. A 5pm kick off would have resulted in a bigger crowd and likely better ratings with no direct competition.

The improved quality of the league will mean more people will watch more often, rather than get boards by the middle of the season One of the disadvantages of your suggestion is that we already have poor reports from overseas regarding our players' ability to go from a 27 round league to 40 plus games a season. Our players are grossly under done physically. This is even flowing through to the National Team in regards to players from the A League and CSL not being sufficiently match hardened. We need to bump up the number of games played rather than lessening them! Hence the need to aim for, at a minimum, a 16 team, 30 round competition with a clear path to 18 teams.

Not to mention and blatantly ignoring the fact there is nothing special about this fixture anymore. This is a damning indictment on a league that was become stale. We play Sydney 3 times this season, already playing them once and it has already gotten old. The A-League is in a spot of bother if the decline continues especially with the Big Bash rising.

I disagree. Was the first match in Melbourne against Sydney this season. So hardly fatigue in this case. Also meaningful in the sense that it's 1st vs 2nd. So again interest should spike. The issue here is the actual broadcast time of the match. They got 87k last year and 10k less this time around. I recall a few years ago this match was played during the day. They could have easily played it at dusk considering its a work day Friday, and also to avoid with Tennis final. A dumb move by FFA/Fox. Hope they learn from it. But I certainly dont think there was less feel for the game. Just the timing of it was executed poorly.

Again public didn't see anything special about derby edition 500 and the stats are showing that. Go and speak with the fans. No one cares about Melbourne v Sydney they care about Melbourne or Sydney. That brings in the hardcore few but definitely doesn't bring the casual or the public.

That brings in the hardcore few but definitely doesn't bring the casual or the public. Oh ok so should we just assume Liverpool vs Man United is a shit match up because they play each other twice a year for the last 50 years? Surely the fans must be a bit over that too. Or any other big match up between clubs in leagues that occur twice a year. Also outside of derbies that was your best crowd by quite some margin so, yeah id say most Victory fans do consider it an important game. Like I said, the timing of the match was poor. Should have been played a lil earlier and you would have had more turning up. Simple as that. I'd also say the back to back nature home game would have meant some making a decision to go to the derby next week instead. I would also like to know what you think the solution is? Play each other only once a season? Maybe once every 3 or 4 years? Pro Rel wouldn't change any of that because they would both be unlikely to get relegated, and if they did it would be a rare occurrence, so they would still be playing each other each year. So what is the solution if you think it's becoming dire? Remember this was the first match up being played in melbourne thus far.

Im glad you brought up a league with similar number of teams and competitions, p&r and an unlimited arsenal of players at the clubs' disposal. You're comparing skills are amazing. But you sit their in shock at the stats and the facts whilst you provide such great analytical data. You go comparison god. You go.

Worrying about game times is really worrying about embelleshments. People watch BBL,Tennis,AFL ,NRL..etc because they follow it,know its on and its easy to access.Whether its on at a specific time does not effect the bulk of viewers. Football at the moment is not foremost in the mind of most people(most people are not engaged with a team),most people don't know its on and most people cant access it. It's up to FFA to improve on those metrics each year with a long term plan. At the moment FFA is focused on sustainability, which addresses none of the driving issues and remains a big issue because of high costs forced on clubs .To address the driving issues,we need a plan to focus on growth and engagement with all those disengaged fans. This will be achieved when we have more teams and a second division.
