+x+x+x+x+x+x+xAdelaide against Mariners would be an interesting fixture this season. It would have been if there was promotion/relegation. It's now a dead rubber! YAWN! If we are going to have 10 years of talking about promotion and relegation on every thread we may as well shut this site down now. This should be a serious consideration. Because I for one want relegation and promotion, but not to the point that I won't accept any football without it. Everyone who keeps handing over cash to the HAL is supporting it in it's current model. If you think things are ever going to change whilst doing that, good luck to you The only time the FFA have actually taken notice of anyone is when they were hit in their backpocket. Boycotts just as the TV deal was about to be negotiated. P.S Not accepting the HAL =/= not accepting any football So how specifically can I support Australian football without supporting the HAL in some way (watch a few games and go to a few games etc.) And at what point is supporting the HAL mean accepting the current status? And I watch 1 game a week or is that too many, or not enough? Do I have to skip the A-league and go straight to the NPL teams (who's comps are still in some way managed by the FFA)? Please give me specifics, not just hurl abuse or call me too dumb to figure it out. 1. as above, Do not spend money on the HAL 2. Yes, skip the A-League But you've gotta have a team bro

Yes, skip the A-League This all or nothing approach is not for me bro. The world is not black or white. I have gone to see a few Rams games, as well as the Wollongong wolves. But buying a ticket to go to see an a league game, for me is not a waste of money, nor is it holding football back or solely supporting bad football administration. As I said, life is not black and white. Yes the FFA is far from good, but not everything is bad in the a-league.

Fri TV: #AFLW #AFLWBluesPies 593k: #Seven 502k Mel 424k (#1 show Mel 100k more than 9News) Ade 78k #7mate 91k (Syd 31k Bri 22k Per 35k) Fri STV #AFLW #AFLWBluesPies #FoxFooty 123k Women's AFL, just like Womens Big Bash, rated big because it is easy to pick up and follow by the existing fan base for those sports The Matildas on the same network was hovering around the 100k mark because the overall interest in football is lower, as seen with A League ratings when they were at their peak on SBS in the first two seasons

424k Melbourne. No one can say that is good ratings for aflw. No ones watching except Melbourne. Hardly great for national sponsors. 50k between Brisbane and Sydney on fta. Pathetic.

It rated well in the only location anyone gives a shit about afl. More proof it is a game meaningful to Victorians only (SA and wa aside with their small populations)

Well at least we can see how good ratings can get with a little bit of promotion. The womens Aussie Rules has been plugged mercilessly on t.v radio and in the newspapers this week and the week before. The Herald Sun had something like two 8 page lift outs on it this week alone. I think it was on the back page a couple of days, and was definitely on at least 3-4 pages for at least 3 of the days (I don't actually read the stories so I can't recall how many there were). There has probably been more on womens AFL in the paper the past 2 weeks than there has been on the A League for the past 3 months, and for the W League for the whole of the past season. We need to get on a Commercial FTA that has some connection with other media platforms to cross promote and sell, sell, sell. Now, i don't know what the 'natural level' of interest in womens AFL would be, but it seems logical to me that the saturation coverage they have received over the past month or so would have to have infiltrated the psyche of the public and garnered a few more viewers. Heck, I don't even watch mens AFL and skip over articles about it in the paper, but even I knew which womens AFL teams were playing and when and where, and had people at work telling me all about it before the game. The point is, hype and exposure works to increase interest and therefore ratings.

The point is, hype and exposure works to increase interest and therefore ratings. You're kidding yourself if you think the W League would get 20k+ at the ground and 500k+ ratings if it had the same level of promotion The AFL has an established audience. Women's AFL taps into that The BBL has an established audience. Women's BBL taps into that With the A League being a "less preferred" league in its code, it could still do well by tapping into the existing football audience. Instead it is chasing bored AFL / NRL fans. Go figure I agree hype works. I agree the A League could be doing much better if it started promoting the game more than 3 days before the league kicks off. But only within the confines of its established audience. People aren't going to watch 2 hours of football just because its on But we don't advertise before the AFL / NRL finishes. Another predicament of our target audience. We also have our hopes pinned on newspaper / TV / radio picking up football when the other codes end - and then spend months complaining when they don't Incidentally: 13k at the ground and 76k on Foxtel is not unobtainable for a 2 tier league with no salary cap. And not unobtainable for a league that starts at the end of August. So much for the Australian way

Afl womens are also leeching off of some of the biggest and most traditional sporting brands in the country, 20k+ would probably turn up to watch Collingwood v Carlton play a game of cricket for fun.
