The main threat to John Coates came on the tennis court of the Australian ambassador's residence in Seoul during the 1988 Olympics, delivered by former Elders boss and Liberal Prime Ministerial aspirant, John Elliott.

Elliott seized the occasion – a garden party welcome to AOC officials, media and businessmen – to threaten commercial retaliation if Melbourne did not win the Australian bid to host the 1996 Olympics. Coates merely looked ahead to Sydney.
