AFL's desperation to spread their game overseas is laughable, and rather pathetic in a way.

It will be interesting to see what sort of crowd they get at Hindmarsh for the first night of AFLX; and even more interesting to see the crowd on the second evening once they realise what a load of rubbish the game is. If every Crows and Power member turned up they wouldn't be able to fit into Hindmarsh- that would be funny too!

Trouble is, the FFA aren't doing enough to combat this sort of AFL nonsense, which gets a free run in the media. Maybe they are thinking that the best thing is to adopt a lofty indifference and just ignore it!

I'd like to agree with you but they said no one would go to the AFLW once the novelty wore off and yet here we are in the second season and they're pulling A-League type crowds.

Are they still free tickets this season or not? They certainly were last season.

Just did my own research and turns out they are still free - with the exception of one game where it's $2 entry...

2018 NAB AFL Women's Fixture

All matches for the 2018 NAB AFL Women's competition are FREE ENTRY with the exception of R2 : Fremantle v Collingwood at Optus Stadium, Perth. Tickets $2 available via Ticketmaster. Entry is subject to capacity.

When they start charging, lets see how long the interest holds then.

They probably don't NEED to charge any time soon and it would be seen as (pretty damn good tbh) advertising for the game/league.

I have a 10 year old niece (in-law) who liked soccer 2 years ago who now plays footy at school instead.

Exactly.  They clog up the media and shove soccer to the side.  They can afford to run it for nothing for the next 20 years and it serves their purpose.

They may never charge for attending and it'll still be deemed a success.

They'd probably see it as a marketing/advertising cost.  Anything that keeps the AFL in the papers is good for them.  AFLW, the NAB cup and now this AFLX.  That'll be year round coverage for them.

Don't deny that - all it is for AFL House is paid advertising, which makes me sad for the women involved because they're nothing more than puppets for the men's game. At least our Matilda's can hold their heads high, knowing they're not just a 'side show' when the men aren't playing. Yes, 3 people may turn up, but at least they have their dignity.

I thought it was funny.

There was a video. They had the flare so a paraglider could find the X. The X that was in the middle... Of the stadium. In case he couldn't see the stadium, he would know the smoke was where he was meant to go.

It's like he doesn't know what to say. Like someone said it once at a meeting, it got leaked and here we are. They are embracing the circus. Top bantz.

https://mobile.twitter.com/7NewsAdelaide/status/960771308626718720/video/1

The flare is use to let the paraglider know which way the wind is blowing close to the ground.  Don't want to be landing down wind and smashing into the seats.

Remember when they said there would be 20,000 South African aussie rules players by 2010? They sure fucked off with a whimper when they didn't see any South African rent money flowing back to Melbourne. How they thought a government of a struggling 3rd world nation was ever good for it is beyond comprehension.

http://www.aflsouthafrica.org/

They even fucked off the website. Deleted like it never happened.

LOL.
Head over to the "International" section of BigFooty if you're looking for a chuckle. There's plenty of diehards convinced that as soon as the rest of the world sees the AFL, they'll cut all historical and cultural ties to existing sports and teams for the chance to play foody.

An arid patch of veldt on the edge of the Kalahari Desert could be the breeding ground for the AFL's future superstars.
After nearly two years of introducing the game and recruiting players, Australian rules has been accepted by a South African provincial Government to be developed by its academy of sport.
And it was from Mafikeng, capital of North-West Province, that Footy South Africa was introduced last week to take charge of the code in this country.
Chief mover of the project is Brian Dixon, former Melbourne champion and a former Victoria minister of sport. Mr Dixon said his mission to South Africa last week was on behalf of the AFL to get footy officially off the ground in this land of rugby and soccer.
Funded by North-West Province, the AFL and betting company Tattersall's, Footy SA makes South Africa the 10th country to establish a structured AFL program.
The South African program is being run by Melburnian Gary Learmonth, an AFL volunteer whose mission is to establish the game in Africa through SCORE (Sports Coaches Out Reach), an international body dedicated to furthering different sports worldwide.
"The mission right now is to get the game established in South Africa, rather than look for superstars, although they will appear as the game grows here," said Mr Learmonth.
"We're also building up the number of footy coaches and umpires. The girls are really keen.
"They don't play because of the hard contact nature of the game, but they're making terrific umpires."
Footy SA now has two fully-fledged clubs and four associates, with a combined membership of around 250 players.

Calm down about the hard contact nature of the game. It's not as tuff as rugby.

AFLW has done well - but also some interstate games have had crowds in the 10s, time will tell if once ppl have to pay or stop feeling like they have to like it to be PC it is still successful.

Maybe AFL HQ getting on top of it early. The head of teh AFL has already contacted AFLW club's about their style of play and to tell them to play attacking - which raises serious questions about the integrity of the competition, howvere, that's nothing new as the AFL itself is a rigged competition itself.

It's pretty funny seeing the feel good articles like one message on social media was all it took for xxxx to become AFLW player. They don't seem to get it that it means the standard is so shit, and the sport so unpopuar among women, that you can just walk in to the top flight league without ever having played it. They then spin it as some game of opportunity where "anyone" can become a star. There's always some spin.

Very curious to see how their numbers stack once they ever start charging.

We'll certainly learn a lot if $2 keeps people away.

Fortunately for them they have the novelty factor of the new stadium.

That $2 entry fee includes public transport (wish Glory tickets included public transport...), so if you want to take a look at the new stadium, Saturday's match will literally be the most cost effective way to do it.

If the NFL cant get overseas (over then a few showcase games in the UK), there is no chance AFL will expand outside of Australia.

I'd say given the token cost and the novelty of the new stadium that's not too surprising.

I think the idea now is to take games overseas and get them paid for plus bonus sponsorship.

All to encourage kids to play in Australia and take over pitches. It also produces hype in the papers about AFL/AFLX being an international game.

I think NRL should do the same thing tbh. The Super League is playing games in Australia right?
They could even do a double header with Super League somewhere if the agree to terms. Isn't Qatar looking to get involved also?
Plenty of places to play in Asia.
