+x+x[quote]gotta love a game where you can start playing it as an adult ,spend two years learning it, then star as a professional against players who have played it all their lives. Here is a bit of Wikipedia history. "Playing as a ruckman and key forward, he first played Australian rules football in April 2014 before making his AFL debut just two years later in April 2016. Cox had previously played basketball for Oklahoma State University in the Big 12 Conference. On debut, he became the tallest player in the history of the AFL, overtaking Aaron Sandilands in height." [2] I knew someone would throw this one up...absolutely no comparison !....Bolt has not played a game of competition football yet and I doubt he will play many ...if any......he has also played football and followed it all his life i.e he has a background in it at least .......the Yank had never played , followed or probably even heard of AFL until 4 years ago...now he is the star of a Grand Final AFL team ?????!!!!!....name me another major sport in the world where that can happen ?

[2] If Bolt ends up playing in the champions league final, you could laugh. Bolt is currently currently trialing for the bottom team in a competition not in the top 40 in the world. Cox is playing in the biggest game possible in AFL anywhere in the world. This Cox bloke never physically touched an AFL ball until he already had a contract at Collingwood, playing at the top level of the sport. The AFL had a specific rule for these types of players. The rookie list was divided into A and B list with B specifically for players who could prove they had never played the sport at either professional levels or the top tier state competitions. The Crows had a player on their list for years and years who hadn't touched a ball in any sport - he was a swimmer. Sydney used the same rule to sign a Canadian rugby union international. That's fucking embarrassing. And AFL people have actually argued that you should watch AFL because they're the best in the world in what you do, but it's clearly proven that any reject of another sport of sufficient tallness can easily get to their top level. But why does this matter? Is this some kind of dick measuring contest? My sport is better than their sport kind of thing? Just... why? Football doesn't need to be defended with Euro snobbery. That just turns people off. It's not like anyone's forcing you to watch it. You watch what you enjoy, but there's no need to be a snob about it. A preference for football over AFL does not make any of us geniuses. I personally think that AFL is inescapably a bit of a joke, but also kinda fun. It's fast, frantic and can be engaging if you give yourself over to it. I've never been to an actual game, but I enjoy following the Swans on TV. I guess I don't judge the entertainment value of a sport on how hard it is to pick up for new players. Who cares? The AFL pumps itself up as the most skillful sport on Earth. It's highly relevant that you can rock up to a game called football, get your biceps measured, then get a pro contract.

Bolt being allowed a chance to trial in the backwater of football's backwater with CCM is one thing, but this is like someone starting for Real Madrid in the Champions League final having never touched a football until after signing for them. Unthinkable! Joke of a sport.

+x+xThat is an absolute tragedy and horrible situation - RIP, but also it's not good for a women's game. There is obviously serious injury risk concerns to females and their body build. No. It could happen to anyone regardless of gender or sport. She clashed heads with a teammate and I guess broke her skull. No one, including her, realised how bad it was until it was too late. It was just a freak accident, similar to Phil Hughes dying on a cricket field after being hit by a bouncer. It had nothing to do with gender. You are definitely right in regards to freak accidents but this is something that is also a major issue in football, in fact a bigger issue than any other sport for women. There are enough studies out there that show head injuries do differ between genders in how common they are and the severity. https://www.neurologyadvisor.com/traumatic-brain-injury/gender-differences-in-concussion-diagnosis-and-treatment/article/636005/This is one of them if you want to read it

+xI bet Mason Cox (the american) will win the best on ground because it will look on the papers That guy is legitimately a beast. He genuinely was best on ground against Richmond on the weekend. I think he took the most contested marks in history.

+xAFLW will get proped up but on bare bones. Crowd, Tv etc have all plummeted. They’ve even cut back the season. After initial fanfare even the AFL are not interested with the head of the AFL getting criticized for not even bothering to tweet about the grand final yet was posting about afl stuff Theyve got a new headache every week. Maybe its too soon , and I mean no offence, the sister of ex-AFL plyer passed away after a head clash playing AFL. https://www.news.com.au/national/south-australia/afl-star-travis-varcoes-sister-dies-at-royal-adelaide-hospital-after-football-game-accident/news-story/3730fa9437d9b44bd1776b7feeed7001

What do they expect. Players are playing the women's professional game after literally never playing a single game of Aussie Rules in their life.

Ahahaha! AFL really seems to be obsessed with having a final ladder based on an uneven set of fixtures.

+xThey’ve even cut back the season. How have they cut back the season? I thought there were new teams joining in 2019 & 2020 ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_Women%27s#Future_clubs ), so if anything, the season will get longer.

+xIt will be 2-3 years until AFLW folds Pretty shocking strike rate if you ask me, but yea AFL is the National Game LOL I don't think they'll let AFLW fold. It's run on the cheap, and the AFL is cashed up enough to easily keep it going, rather than lose face by letting it fail.

+xTwo years must be some sort of record for an AFL venture overseas? ----- [quote] Gold Coast not keen on a return to ChinaGOLD Coast has walked away from future AFL matches in China after two years of playing Port Adelaide in Shanghai. Suns chairman Tony Cochrane used the club's best and fairest awards night to declare the club's interest in the overseas venture over. "The board have decided that to give the playing group every possible chance in the future that the trip is too onerous and too difficult," he said, reported by the Gold Coast Bulletin. lol But, but I thought AFL was a big tough guy sport. You know, real men. And they can't even handle one international trip where they are given 2 weeks rest period around the fixture?

+xThe Port AFL China deal was never about fans on the ground, it was all about business connections between the various people involved with pushing the idea. They were just using the AFL as a vehicle for forging connections. Yet another reason Koch & co should have talked to AU, as they have Chinese sponsors located in Shanghai, but in true "AFL is best" ilk they ignored a sports club that first played Shanghai Shenua in 2005.

Trouble is the AFL is run from Melbourne ....and in Melbourne AFL does indeed reign supreme. So the powerbrokers there live in a bubble of "AFL is everything" . They assume that because they love it everyone else in the world should too. I am sure they really believe that other countries will abandon football and love AFL ..."if only they could just see it live". They live in a delusional bubble and so do the Victorian pollies.
Personally I am Football first ,daylight second , then Rugby League a very distant third .....AFL and Rugby Union do not even enter my thoughts , nor does Cricket anymore ...but ..hey... that just me .
