Changing the game

Typifying this, Australia’s premier footballing competition, the Hyundai A-league, enters its thirteenth year with a new identity, designed by Australian brand agency, Hulsbosch. Along with the A-league, the Westfield W-league and Foxtel Y-league, designed as competitive competitions for women and youth teams, equally receive custom identities.

Uniquely bespoke, the Football Federation Australia (FFA) revealed that the rebrand takes on a individualistic focus, expressing the logo’s innovative design by aligning each team in the league with its own colour-coordinated version of the design. During a 12-month consultation period, Hulsbosch liaised with the wider Australian football community and across each platform within the FFA.

With a launch scheduled for the opening of the 2017/18 season, the rebrand is set to unify each branch of Australian football under one diverse banner, something Hulsbosch showcased in a promotional video for the league.

Jaid Hulsbosch, director of Hulsbosch, says, “The unique identity is primarily a reflection of the passionate football fan. It delivers a clarified visual language that is energetic and positive for a stronger football footprint in Australia. Magnetic on and off the field, the versatile design will be utilised across a range of platforms from packaging, broadcast, digital and game day promotions.”

FFA chief executive, David Gallop, says, “Football has recently been confirmed as the number one club-based participation sport in Australia and we’ve just signed a new six year broadcast deal so it’s a great time to reveal a new brand for our leagues. The work we have done with Hulsbosch gives us a strong brand platform demonstrating the unity at the heart of Australian football.

If it is just a logo, then why change it? Shows how stupid they FFA are then by your logic.

It's interesting because people care deeply about their club logos/crests. It is a symbol that represents something you support and call your own.

When Juventus recently released their new logo/crest it was met with worldwide condemnation. That generally happens if people care. the fact this new A-league logo sparked debate from one extreme to the other and everything in between, shows again that people care.

I agree all in all it is only a small thing and people probably should have less attachment to the symbol as it is what the symbol represents that people really care about. Much in the same way people get very techy whenever there is a proposal to change the national flag. It is but only a symbol that represents our country, people fight for the country not the symbol, we stand and show respect for the country not the symbol yet because it does symbolise our country people can transfer those feelings and emotions to the symbol itself and if someone proposes to change it we always see people getting upset, even though at the end of the day it is only a symbol and not the actual thing we care about.

The FFA has been working with design house Hulsbosch for a year on a redesign that CEO David Gallop hoped would convey the energy of the sport as it it continues to grow.

Not sure what is worse, it took them a year to come up with that design or a company actually got paid for it.

Just do a Google image search for "corporate ribbon logo" and you'll see how forgettable, inane and pedestrian all this is.

why would anyone care much about a logo or where it comes from?

it is just a logo. i can't even remember what the last one was.

Do the FFA have any kind of official 'football advisors' or panel within the body of sorts from a group of experienced ex-international players / football people etc who make recommendations or advisory plans to the FFA to implement ? Seems like it would be a good way to bridge the gap between their experience / goals of the football community and the FFA 's goals / certain inexperiences. And the logo should have been updated not changed, particularly since the existing logo is still quite new (12 years isn't old). When a brand is as young as the aleague an update shows renewed investment and confidence in the existing brand moving forward, changing it says we're not what we're doing about this, so how about this new one...

From Lowy's 2016 report:-

"The theme of collaboration extends to how the FFA board operates.

In addition to the typical board committees overseeing financial and other issues, we have established new board committees reflecting our strategic priorities – Football Development; Broadcast and Women’s Football.  We recognise that there is enormous untapped experience among the wider football family and we were keen to establish a structured way to benefit from the store of knowledge outside the boardroom.  So we have already recruited football people outside FFA to add value to the board’s deliberations.  Perhaps the best example of this to date is the inclusion of former Socceroo Stan Lazaridis, former Matilda Kim Schaefer and former Australian Institute of Sport Head Coach Ron Smith to the Football Development Committee.

The Referees’ Committee also includes members with specialist experience and expertise in the area.

We are now in the process of making similar external appointments to our Women’s Committee.

I am also determined to make sure that the FFA leadership continues to collaborate closely with the valued members ofthe football family, both in Australia and internationally."

No, you're right, they're doing a bang-up job.

What I said was

FFA are a long way from perfect but neither are they  hopeless nor  led by an incompetent  management team. You could argue that the Lowy family with over 70 years experience in Australian football and there business knowledge would be hard to beat .

I actually think it's time for a change and at the end of the contracts we need new leadership with both Gallop an Lowy to go but that does not mean everything they do it's hopeless.

You can read what you want ..... FFA could improve of that there is no doubt ... but read this forum and they do nothing right ...

Maybe we should have 18 teams and a second and third level for P & R .... run by Football people .... who understand Football... who have lived a life of Football and they just understand ... instead we finish up with corporate lawyers doing deals.... yeah lets go back and run it like the NSL

Was about to say the same thing. Equality is so important in Australian culture today that it would be insane to re-brand the Mens league and ignore the Womens league. Probably why they went with a generic logo that's not gender or age specific to cover all bases. Definitely shows how out of touch the FFA can be at times. At least they had enough common sense to listen to an expert.

I don't get it. The new Y-League and W-League logos are the same as the new A-League logo (though the W-League gets red - Westfield red? - instead of orange), just as the old Y-League and W-League logos were the A-League logo with different text underneath. They've only changed one logo - because they only had one to start with - and it would be pretty stupid to change the A-League logo but leave the other two to use the old 8 As logo which, you know, symbolises A-League.

In any event, I don't see what was wrong with the 'old' logo. The new one's okay if they were starting from scratch but the old one looked cool, was a nod to history (started with eight teams), and, most importantly, should have been kept considering the FFA needs to ingrain some sort of identity with the general public. Can't do that if you go 'refreshing' the logo like this.

442 is starting to head the way of other forums where a group of posters so constantly post negatively posts they turn people off from using the site.

If you read 442 you could be excused for thinking football in Australia was run buy a headless chook is a hopeless  is a rabble and be forgiven for thinking football was in it's last days.

Further you would find it hard to believe they have second only to AFL the highest sponsorship and over $100 a year revenue.

FFA are a long way from perfect but neither are they  hopeless nor  led by an incompetent  management team. You could argue that the Lowy family with over 70 years experience in Australian football and there business knowledge would be hard to beat

I actually think it's time for a change and at the end of the contracts we need new leadership with both Gallop an Lowy to go but that does not mean everything they do it's hopeless.

12 years after the A-League started, we still have only two more teams than we started and still have to do the tedious triple round-robin; we might get two more teams in a couple of seasons' time but the FFA is still working on the 'criteria' (shouldn't that be a standing work item? Have they not ever given any thought to what they might be looking for?); there is no proper second tier, let alone promotion/relegation; the A-League is hammered by other Australian comps in crowds and ratings yet shows no signs of significant improvement; FTA doesn't care and the pay TV deal was underwhelming; clubs continues to bleed money due to the salary floor and stadium standards; the FFA Cup (Gallop's one half achievement) is still rigged; the Chairman's position is a Lowy family dynasty; and...

...the FFA is patting itself on the back for changing the A-League logo (presumably at a not insignificant cost).

No, you're right, they're doing a bang-up job.

How hard is it to make a proper logo?
1. Make it a ball shape. Done.
2. Make it simple enough for a kid to draw. Done.
3. Make it recognisably Australian so it's not lost in a sea of football comps worldwide, Green+Gold colours or the Southern Cross somewhere. Too hard basket, maybe in ten years.

The MLS style club branding is a good idea at least.

Lucky they are focusing on the important things.

Wouldn't want to work on silly things like expansion criteria.
