For the draw, what we want is a weak second and third team in our group. You only need to get out of the group in second place.

Looking at our Asian Cup squad we've got a number who have essentially left the national team frame. Many have made poor club decisions and have seen their careers stalled. Amazing that Herd, Antonis, Oar, Davidson an Burns were there. Herd left the camp injured from memory. Spiranovic, just don't get me started. Franjic and Wilkinson have been unfortunate while Bresciano retired. Galekovic is getting on. Thankfully Sainsbury, Luongo and Ryan have matured very nicely. Wright actually didn't make the cut. He, Irvine, Goodwin, Mooy, Behich and Rogic have formed a solid core. The Ikon, Smith and Maclaren project is on ice.

Watching Bayern Hannover appears to be a preview for our France game. Just have to take it to them. Too much standing back.

538 gives us about a 1 in 4 chance of making it out of our group which isn't impossible
with a good coach it can happen
Russia incidentally had a 1 in 45 chance of getting a group as easy or easier getting nearly the ideal draw
I think 2 draws and an honorable loss would be a good result that a competent coach could pull off. A bit of luck or some poor form from one of the oponents and one of the 2 losses might be a win so 1 in 4 sounds about right

Val Migliaccio, Soccer Writer, The Advertiser ADELAIDE United gloveman Paul Izzo’s chances of becoming the first SA-born goalkeeper to represent the Socceroos at a FIFA World Cup hinges on the new Australia boss. Izzo is in career-best form after an outstanding performance in Adelaide’s 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory away last weekend proved he has a case. Although critics raved about his game, Izzo didn’t talk up his chances of being on the Socceroos flight to Russia. But four years after Socceroos goalkeeping legend Ron Corry claimed Izzo is the best talent he’s coached at the AIS since Socceroos superstar Mark Bosnich, Izzo is living up to expectations. “I’d love to be part of the World Cup,” Izzo said. “Seeing what the Socceroos did in 2005 when Mark Schwarzer (Socceroos keeper) made all those saves against Uruguay to get us into the 2006 World Cup was the point where I had dreams to go to the World Cup for my country. “But I just have to focus on what is happening now.” But Russia is not an impossible dream for Izzo. During the current 2018 World Cup cycle, ex-Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou used Brighton and Hove Albion’s Mat Ryan for 16 matches, Adam Federici (Bournemouth) for five and Mitch Langerak (Levante UD) once. Danny Vukovic (Genk), Eugene Galekovic (Melbourne City) and Mark Birighitti (NAC Breda) were unused substitutes in the campaign. But with the Socceroos yet to appoint a new boss, Izzo is likely to be taken out of the A-League for up to five matches in January for the Asian U-23 championships. The tournament - played outside of the FIFA international match calendar - is sure to cause United much angst given the national U-23s squad is the Olympic-age team. Izzo will be too old for the 2020 Tokyo Games — should they qualify for China . “I have been put in a 50-man (U-23) squad,’’ Izzo said. “There’s a few goalkeepers in there (including Reds No. 2 Daniel Margush). “The camp starts in early January and I may have my birthday on a plane ( January 6, flying to China).” His career has flourished since Izzo made a bold move to Central Coast in 2015 after being Galekovic’s understudy. Izzo first had to deal with unrest after Mariners No. 1 keeper Liam Reddy departed for Western Sydney. Izzo then played 22 games after Reddy left, copping 54 goals with no clean sheets. Socceroos legend Paul Okon in 2016 oversaw Mariners’ improved competitiveness, with Izzo winning the best player award, playing 21 times and conceding 32 goals with four clean sheets. In 10 Reds appearances this season, Izzo has conceded 12 goals and kept one clean sheet. Izzo says he grew up idolising Italian legendary 2006 World Cup-winning gloveman Gianluigi Buffon and was also impressed by ex-Reds glovemen Galekovic and Birighitti.

In 2014, we had an impossible group. Now we have a pretty easy one, and even though we don't have the greatest generation right now, the expectation should be at least advancing from the group. Two draws and a loss would be terribly disappointing.

Two draws and a loss would be terribly disappointing. I think the current generation get considerable exposure and analysis compared to pre 2006. We see them play so many competitive games we are more aware of their strengths and weaknesses. The current team is a very battle - hardened, match savvy unit. They've played a lot of international football and have considerable tactical acumen. No matter what the results are, I'm delighted we even qualified for the World Cup. Too many nail biting moments in the Russian qualification process for me.

From travelling around the world football is the main sport in circa 25 countries in five continents I've visited. We are the only country who've qualified for Russia where football is not the number one or two sport.

For WC selection someone else made a compelling point in Socceroo discussion.
As we see HAL players a lot, we rate them favourably compared to players who've recently gone overseas like Borello, Goodwin, Maclaren et al. Even long serving Euroroos like Amini are harder to appraise. They often have to start from scratch with no reputation amongst the local football leagues and players in Europe. It is also more difficult to view them playing by living in Australia.
One thing we have as a football nation is we are currently perceived as a consistent WC qualifier. This is very significant in the global football milieu. We have also given a good account tot ourselves on occasions in the WC and Confed Cup against quality teams like Chile, Holland, Japan, Croatia, Serbia and Ghana.
It would be interesting to know which other nations have qualified for every World Cup since Germany 2006?
From other continental football feds I'd surmise:
*Europe
Germany
Spain
France
England?
Croatia?
Portugal?
Switzerland?
Czech Republic?
*Africa
Nigeria?
Ivory Coast?
* Asia
Japan
South Korea
Australia
Iran?
*South America
Brazil
Argentina
*North America
Mexico
This list only categorically states that 9 teams are regular qualifiers in the last four World Cups.
Given how small the profile of football is in Australia, compared to most of the 208 countries who comprise FIFA, we are doing something right. Outside Australia this would be perceived differently than from a heliocentric perspective.
The fact we are such regular WC qualifiers would ensure a number of overseas stakeholders would recognise this as a significant achievement.
Past and present powerhouses like Italy, Holland, Chile, Russia (big country with vast population and a good domestic league), Saudi Arabia, USA ( both regular qualifiers ), Cameroon, Egypt ( the latter African country constantly African champs but who struggle to qualify for WCs), have all missed out at times on qualification.
Australian qualification in four consecutive WCs is a notable achievement in easily the world's most popular sport.

One point made by a few pundits like Archie recently, is to appraise players over a sustained period rather than a few games.
ATM Dimi Petratos and DDS are in scintillating form. Mitch Nichols has dropped off. Milligan and Troisi have also had a bad HAL game or two in recent times.
If DDS and Petratos are still playing as well next April, then it may be worth selecting them.

This scenario will also probably recur with our current squad. Some will disappear from the national team scenario in a year or two.

It's 11 + Australia by my count. Pretty impressive, though South Korea has made 9 in a row and Japan 6 in a row, so we still have a ways to go to catch up even to the top Asian teams.

Why does the A-League page have so many fluff personal opinon pieces? Dimi Petratos (Newcastle Jets) How good would it be for an Australian to win the medal? And the Jets attacker who can also play as a "10" is building a compelling case 10 rounds in. Tricky with ball at feet, he presses superbly well and can score long-range rockets. Pushing for a Socceroo call up, Petratos' form has mirrored that of his Jets, and both are hugely exciting to watch. Daniel De Silva (Central Coast Mariners) One of the reasons why the Mariners are building a case for Finals Series football is their diminutive playmaker. At 20, his best days are still ahead of him, yet he's already transforming the Mariners. Paul Okon, his coach at Central Coast, did everything he could to bring the WA talent to Gosford. And now, fans are seeing why he couldn't sleep until after the deal was done. De Silva has proven to be a dream signing. Josh Brillante (Sydney FC) He may be back in the Socceroos frame by season's end. And why not. Brillante, 24, is a natural successor - and not just because of his bushy beard - to Mile Jedinak in the national team's number six role. This season, the former Serie A player (he signed with Fiorentina from Newcastle Jets in 2014), has been outstanding at an outstanding side, Sydney FC. The Bundaberg-born midfielder combines an incredible work ethic with exceptional tackling and an ability to score goals.

If we didn't have a new manager we could actually allow these players to have a chance before the world cup. But now the new manager is going to need to pick the reliable players.

@Sam
This may also be the result of Ange picking squads and teams haphazardly during his entire tenure.
If we had a match today under Ange we have idea what team he would put out.
So we don't have a secure 11 or there about. The new manager will need to remedy this and it's much better to focus on that then trailing fringe players.

World Cup carrot dangling for Wilkinson He wants it, but Sydney FC stopper Alex Wilkinson isn't pinning his hopes to a second World Cup coming with the Socceroos.13 December 2017 It's been a while since Alex Wilkinson pulled on the green and gold. Two years have passed since his last Socceroos outing and 18 months gone since his last squad selection. But as the next World Cup draws nearer, the Sydney FC centre-back has found himself reliving the previous instalment in Brazil. A trusted member of Ange Postecoglou's new guard, Wilkinson started all three of Australia's group games at the 2014 tournament. The 33-year-old has since appeared in a handful of Russia 2018 qualifiers but seemingly fell out of favour with Postecoglou, halting his caps tally at 16. Stellar club form on the way to last season's A-League premiership-championship double spurred talk of a recall - and then another omission. It's why Wilkinson speaks cautiously about his aspirations for a second World Cup coming. "Any player loves to represent their country and for me that was a highlight of my career, representing Australia at the World Cup," Wilkinson said. "But I haven't been involved now for a while so I'm not exactly confident of it. "But if you're playing well for your club you're always a chance, and that's what I'll be concentrating on." That last point is indisputable. Wilkinson has played nearly every minute of the last two campaigns as the backbone of Sydney's record-breaking defence. This campaign he's remained unflappable, and dogged when needed - his 70 clearances are by far the most in the league. The push to impress continues at Allianz Stadium on Friday night, when the Sky Blues host Melbourne City in a bid to go eight points clear at the top. Whether or not he factors in the thinking of Australia's next coach, Wilkinson just hopes Postecoglou's successor continues his exhaustive work scouring the globe for talent. "He gave every Australian a chance and made you feel like, no matter where you were playing, if you were doing well at your club you're a chance of representing your country," he said. "Whoever comes in next, it would be good if they looked at it the same way. "And when you get a coach who's coached in the A-League before or is well aware of the A-League and its players - and willing to pick them - it gives you that confidence boost and that thought that if I'm doing well maybe I'm a chance."
