I can't see any March friendlies being sorted. We'll either be after a new manager or will suffer from poor FFA planning. Practice games are important but I feel our players will need a break after another 8 weeks at club level after this tournament.

I expect the focus in March will be on the AFC U23 Championship qualifiers which fortunately fall inside the FIFA window of March 18-26 with matches against Cambodia on the 22nd, Taiwan on the 24th and South Korea on the 26th. With only the group winners and four best runners up out of 11 groups and probably still with Arnie in control, we'll need all the eligible players we can get.

Could be Arnie's last chance saloon, but hopefully he'll be moved on by then.

InB4 we half arse it with an A-League only squad and bomb out, again.

@localstar, it’s been done before. You might not know of Milan Ivanovic. And our national side was no weaker back then in the 1990s, and arguably this current side is deteriorating to such an extent we will end up much worse. Anyway, I am not totally wedded to the idea of Isaias, I just think we are so bloody weak right now we should be open to all options, old and foreign or young and born here. We keep waiting for that next golden generation, thinking it’s just around the corner and the next crop of 15 year olds is full of Vidukas, Kewells, Brescianos, Cahills and Aloisis, but maybe they’re not coming for quite some time. In the meantime, while FFA get their house in order, and create a decent national competition and legitimate youth pathways, we need to take the talent from wherever it exists.

Milan only captained Australia once. His centre back partner Alex Tobin was usually captain. And Milan had played at the highest level in Europe with Red Star- whereas Isais played mainly in the Spanish second division- so he is a bit of a come down really, perhaps indicative of our current state. The next GG will never happen as current players don't know how to score goals, and coaches don't seem to be able to teach it.

we could do without his histrionics, face pulling and endless debates with referees.

When did you turn into Nick Meredith?

I'm 50/50 or less on Isa as a Socceroo for various reasons but I wouldn't have thought having a nice face (Kruse) and histrionics (Kruse, Cahill, Kewell) were considerations for selection.

Also, while I understand the need to rejuvenate the squad now, I do get a little sick of players getting picked on potential rather than current ability generally. We hear it all the time on the boards.

A national team should be the best players available to win you games today not someone who might solve a current problem in the future.

Again, I am talking about when games matter not in the coming few friendlies which I agree should be a lot of experimenting

So we're down 1 spot and rightly so but look at the movement in some places!

Unfair for Vietnam to only go up one place, only 3 places up for Thailand and Kyrgyzstan going down 4 places, but FIFA rankings don't take into account relative ranking of opposition or goals scored like Elo does. (Not that there's one official version of Elo for football).

Great to see Japan and Korea go up so much. Tajikistan has now just scored two goals against a top 30 team lol Big move for Qatar too but hardly surprising with such a low rank to begin with.

Problem for Vietnam is they lost 3 times this tournament. With wins against Yemen and Jordan, you won't rise much with that.

L really can't see the first team getting matches in the window in 3 weeks. Arnold focusing on the U23. Our fit A team members generally need a break anyway.

Sainsbury and Behich can reassess what's going on while A League and Asian Roos will be playing for their club.

If we had friendlies set up this window I'd select

Ryan Vukovic Langerak

Karacic Williams Sainsbury Degenek Burgess Wright Behich Gersbach

Mooy Luongo Amini Milligan Irvine Hrustic

Mabil Taggart Giannou Williams Juric Iredale

Quite a number of injuries and the U23 away. I wouldn't bring the A League players across. It'd be an interesting camp to see what everyone on the fringe is thinking and to go over the big campaign ahead.

This is why you don't have the seniors coach the same as the u23s. You can't tell me our national team doesn't need a camp plus match right now.

It's incredibly frustrating and distracting. Trying to be positive at least there'll be insight into future squad members. One could assume it could fast track the better ones instead of being ignored like the days of Holger and even Pim.

Wikipedia has 3 socceroos games listed in June as the last matches prior to the next World Cup and Asia Cup qualification cycle starting in September.

China in China on 6 June. South Korea in South Korea on 11 June. El Salvador in Perth on 14 June.

Without seeing anything online to confirm I don't think that the last one sounds legit because El Salvador plays in their first Concacaf Gold Cup match on June 17 in Jamaica, and it is a very tight turnaround for us from the 2nd date above. (EDIT - it now looks like it has been deleted)

The South Korea match was talked about following the match here in Brisbane late last year. I can't remember us playing China for a while.

El Salvador in Perth has been removed from wiki. It's only wiki anyway. Would have to be one of the most unusual friendly games ever.

Anyway, China and Korea would be great to round up the season.

  9.  Brunei (194)
  10.  Timor-Leste (195)
  11.  Pakistan (200)
  12.  Sri Lanka (202)

Round 1 WC AFC qualifying drawn tomorrow. Would be great to see Bhutan get through again.

The schedule of the competition is expected to be as follows.[7]

RoundMatchdayDate
First roundFirst leg6 June 2019
Second leg11 June 2019

Matchday 97 September 2021
Matchday 1012 October 2021
Fourth roundFirst leg11 November 2021
Second leg16 November 2021

I like the 2nd round has two matches each window. I'm not sure if it was the case last time but it'll be compact. I suppose the 3rd round with single matchdays can reduce the hassle of running around but it all builds up to a single game. It's imperative to have some kind of training match pre game.

Just a bit of fun, well not really as round 2 is daunting enough these days that we might slip. I'd take a group of Australia, Oman, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore.
I'm sure a lot of Aussie fans would love Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and something like Cambodia or Malaysia. It'd be nice to avoid West Asia for once.

Rankings might be updated again before the draw. 8 teams per pot. Pot 2 would at least see us get only one Syria, Jordan, Uzbekistan, Iraq or Vietnam. Thailand have slipped to pot 3.

  1.  Iran (21)
  2.  Japan (26)
  3.  South Korea (37)
  4.  Australia (41)
  5.  Qatar (55)

Guam and Bhutan, the two heavy hitters drawn together!

Some or all of those losers may be seeded back in if we end up going to 48 teams for 2022, I guess that's why there's been no information yet about the following rounds, although there never seems to be with the AFC.

Exactly right. I wonder how the structure would be with more slots? Say 8 qualify teams for AFC as an example. 4 groups of 5 with top 2 through?

It'd actually be really cool to have something like South America. One group of 10 with 18 games. One can fantasise.
