Little rumours keep popping up everywhere, so I thought I'd tidy it up a little so they're not being posted willy-nilly in the Aus football forum and people aren't starting topics in here.

So post your rumours here and submit them to the main site instead of starting new topics.

Cheers.

The Newcastle Herald article about Adam Griffiths denying his move to the Gold Coast is not very convincing. And his coach doesn't sound very impressed:

"Give Adam a ring and ask him what he's doing," Jets coach Gary van Egmond said last night when contacted by The Herald. "Ask him has he signed. For me, the quicker the boy comes clean in what he's doing with his future next year, the better he'll be for Newcastle this year."

Sounds like he has a verbal agreement with GCU at the very least, but doesn't want a rollicking from his local fans for the rest of the year.

As for Culina, I suspect he has made a verbal agreement with GCU after his agent tabled a contract including a big farewell payment from his current club, but the FFA is now warning against such trickery. Could it come down to a legal battle? Clive Palmer versus Frank Lowy in court - that could be nasty!

Why doesn't this forum appear in the Rumour Mill section of the News website?

And as long as I am bitching, why is it that when you post a comment you go back to the start of the comments, rather than being returned to where you were? Webmaster, I summon thee!

But the Rumour Mill section is under News, and it's just rumours...???

Anyway, I see Kosmina today saying that Santalab (who's just done his shoulder) hasn't signed a new contract and might also be heading to the Gold Coast. If so, another great signing.

All article comments appear in the forums (ie. each article has it's own thread in the forum). So, when you create a new post in the forum, it will return you to your newly created comment at the tail end of the discussion. I think if you post at the article itself, it will return you to the first page of comments.

That's what I mean. It's a bit weird. I'd rather be returned to where I just commented, so I can verify that my comment appeared. Happens on other blogs.

Again, just trying to be constructive. Do you want me to start my own STFU thread? :-)

And as for this GC/NQ rumours thread, which appears under » Forums » The Rumour Mill , my question is why I cannot click on News (menu bar) and then Rumour Mill, and see the same content. Is it because this is "sticky"?

Is there a Doofus 101 thread I should be directed to?

Because this thread was created by a user - not automatically generated by an article.

When a new article (incl. news reports, club blogs, rumours) is published, it has no comments on it. A thread will be automatically generated in the forums only when someone has posted a comment via the article. The official FourFourTwo threads that are generated from an article have the tag [FFT Article] on the end of the title in the forums. The ones that don't are created by a user. Also the first post is a giveaway as it will have a link back to the article and says "Have your say."

OK, sorry to have started this thread out on the wrong tack. Let me make up for it with a few informative posts.

This is from FAUX today, citing GCU interest in Melbourne players Michael Thwaite and Steve Pantelidis.

http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,24619897-5017986,00.html

Quote:
Bleiberg retains faith in Pantelidis

By Marco Monteverde
November 08, 2008

GOLD Coast United coach Miron Bleiberg isn't concerned that Skilled Park-bound Steve Pantelidis can't get a game for his current club Melbourne Victory.

Bleiberg has confirmed the 25-year-old midfielder was "in my plans" for the Coast's entry into the A-League next season.

Pantelidis, a member of the Victory's 2006-2007 title-winning side, hasn't played a minute of first team football this season and will this weekend line up as an over-age player in Melbourne's National Youth League clash with the Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

But Bleiberg remains a true believer in Pantelidis's talent and is confident he will be a major contributor to the Gold Coast's cause next season for his versatility and "unpleasant" manner on the field.

"The Costa Rican (Jose Luis Lopez) took his place in the Melbourne side . . . this happens in football," Bleiberg said.

"Teams try to go in different directions, so they bring in new players who take the place of the old players.

"But I like him as a player. When I was coaching the Roar and we played against the Victory, he was unpleasant to play against because he was strong and committed."

Another Victory player in Bleiberg's sights is Cairns product Michael Thwaite, who will attempt to foil Roar in Saturday night's A-League clash.

Thwaite, 25, is on loan to the Victory from Norwegian club SK Brann, with Bleiberg keen to entice him to the Gold Coast next season under a similar arrangement.

"Come January, we'll approach him. We'll talk to his club," the United boss said. "I'm interested in him.

"There's competition for his services from the Victory and from North Queensland, but I'm happy to fight for him."

This interest in striker Andrew Barisic was also reported today at http://www.goldcoast.com.au/article/2008/11/08/21551_gold-coast-sport.html

Note Blieberg also says Porter is his favourite to parnet Shmelz.

Quote:
United close in on Melbourne striker Barisic

David Lewis

November 8th, 2008

ANOTHER piece of coach Miron Bleiberg's player puzzle was revealed last night with confirmation Gold Coast United are close to sealing the signature of a third central striker, little-known Andrew Barisic from the Victorian State League.

Brawny and bustling, Barisic scored 17 times in 26 games for the Melbourne Knights last season as the club where it all began for Socceroos icon Mark Viduka reached the grand final.

He spent two years in the fourth tier of German football and was spotted by Bleiberg on a recent scouting mission to Melbourne.
Have your say on the feedback form below

According to Bleiberg, he fits the bill as a shadow for the coach's front-line favourites, New Zealand international Shane Smeltz and Joel Porter, who will join United from English outfit Hartlepool next year.

Bleiberg, who coached the Knights for a season in the mid-80s, believes Victoria is a hot-bed of talent and is confident a deal will be inked with the strapping 23-year-old Barisic.

"I deliberately targeted the area because the state competition there produces some excellent players," he said.

Not least Barisic, it seems, with Bleiberg adding: "He's a big boy and for a player his size he's got some good touches and he also scores goals."

GCU also recently signed attacking midfielder James Brown from AIS, as I noted on another Aust Football thread. So the full team to date, updated from that thread, now looks like this (unless I have missed someone):

GOALKEEPERS

Jess Vanstratten
Scott Higgins (Reserve)

DEFENDERS

Kristian Rees (Reserve)
Daniel Piorkowski (Reserve)

Adam Griffiths (Strong Rumour)
Chris Coyne (Rumour)
Shane Stefanutto (Rumour)
Scott Chipperfield (Rumour)
Michael Thwaite (Rumour)

MIDFIELDERS

Zenon Caravella
Matthew Osman
James Brown

Steve Fitzsimmons (Reserve)

Jason Culina (Strong Rumour)
Brendan Santalab (Strong Rumour)
Sun Jihai (Rumour)
Mile Sterjovski (Rumour)
Steve Pantelidis (Rumour)

ATTACKERS

Shane Smelz
Andrew Barisic (Rumour)
Felipe (? was on contract for 08/09, now in Brazil again)

Any errors? Anyone I missed?

LOL if they did have that playing roster they would be so far over the cap it is not funny.

26 K a week. Not including Culina they would probably be paying (min per player):

Adam Griffiths: 1
Shane Stefanutto: 1
Scott Chipperfield: 3
Michael Thwaite: 1.5
Mile Sterjovski: 3
Smeltz: 3.5

Thats 13 already for 7 players. They need a minimum of 16. Not going to happen.

Nice to see you worked that one out yourself after you got all excited about their 'signings' and I pointed out the vast impracticality of the cost to you. Unless both teams are getting substantial salary cap concessions to get established, not going to happen.

Thanks martyB, does anyone know if Sun Jihai is getting game time with Sheffield Utd? He might consider a loan deal? I suspect there will be at least one big name Chinese player on board next June...

As for the total salaries, if you look at the names being mentioned there are a whole lot of midfielders, and no way they will sign ALL those socceroos. I just put together all the names I have heard seriously linked to GCU to date.

Jihai has started 9 league games this season, plus 1 off the bench, for a side who are 4th in the Championship. He's only just joined them on a 2 year deal IIRC. Can't see him taking a whacking great pay-cut to come down under.

Sorry, a couple more rumours from that same article:
Quote:
North may be joined by at least two other indigenous players in North Queensland's inaugural squad. Former Socceroos midfielder Kasey Wehrman, a Mt Isa junior, is believed to be considering returning home after eight years in Norway, while Matheson confirmed he hoped to step up negotiations with exciting Queensland Roar winger Tahj Minniecon now that the the Australian under-20s have completed their World Youth Cup qualifying campaign.

"We've approached Tahj, he's asked to be left alone during this Young Socceroos campaign, but we're not going to give up," Matheson said.
