at 23 players per club looking at about 140k per player

In doing so, this increases the attraction of the competition to fans, sponsors and broadcast partners.The Salary Cap also safeguards the economic viability of the Hyundai A-League by ensuring that Clubs are not put in a position where they are forced to spend beyond their financial capabilities in order to stay competitive on the field.2. What is the Salary Cap in the Hyundai A-League?The Hyundai A-League Salary Cap is $2.60 million for the 2016/17 Season. Clubs must spend at least the Salary Floor which is $2.340m (representing 90% of the Salary Cap).The Salary Cap applies to the 20 to 23 Players that Clubs have registered to their Hyundai A-League Player Roster. Unless specifically exempt, all payments and benefits (eg. cars, accommodation, etc) provided by a Club to a Player are included in the Club’s Salary Cap.3. These ‘exemptions’ or ‘allowances’ incentivise Clubs to spend in specific strategic areas such as attracting marketable world class players to the Hyundai A-League (Marquee or Guest Players), retaining long-serving Players on multi-year contracts (Loyalty Players), encouraging the development of young Australian Players (Homegrown Players) or identifying late-developing Players that may have missed the traditional player pathway (Mature Age Rookie).The following discretionary payments are outside the Salary Cap:Designated Players – A Club can spend an unlimited amount on two Players (Foreign or Australian) it nominates as Designated Players;Guest Player – A Club can spend an unlimited amount on one Guest Player who must satisfy the prescribed marketability criteria as approved by FFA. A Guest Player is restricted to a maximum of 14 Hyundai A-League matches;Season 2016/17 Guest Player – A Club can spend an unlimited amount on one Season 2016/17 Guest Player who must satisfy the prescribed marketability criteria as approved by FFA. Do players get paid with just salary or do they get match fees depending on whether the team W/D/L on top of salary?

So many players in the league that don't deserve this.

Bonus payments are virtually non-existent in the A-League - practically outlawed as they have to fall within the salary cap.  If you had too many players on bonuses, and you had a Sydney FC type season, you would blow your budget.

There's a small relocation allowance, was $10k (tax free) last time I checked, for players switching teams or moving into the league from overseas.  A little room for 'assistance' with sponsor cars (Hyundai) and housing (the housing situation was tightened up a few years back which hurt the Mariners a lot as they had previously been able to get cheap accommodation for players).

Average wage across the league (non-marquee) is around $140k, but in reality most players are on less than $100k, with the higher earners in each squad swallowing up the rest.

Incidentally, for most 'established' A-League players, that's the 28-32 yr olds who know they aren't going overseas, contract length is a greater concern than the actual salary, because if you drop out of the league at that age it's either part-time in the NPL, or a trip to the back end of Asia.

On Asia - worth noting that not only do the players earn decent salaries, but it's also mostly tax-free, they also get win bonuses, free accommodation, free cars, and in many cases even electricity, gas, water, phone, etc., bills are picked up by the clubs.  Our sides are heavily disadvantaged in this respect by the salary cap restrictions.

I'm sure Sydney did have a bonus component to their wage structure in at least one recent season (possibly last season?) Fuck knows how they worked it out though as it all has to fall absolutely under the cap.

Reading the justification for the cap is making me laugh so hard. 

I was led to believe goal bonuses was quite a common thing still.

Robbie Middleby confirmed Ryan Griffiths was on a goal bonus at the Jerks.

I am 99% confident I remember that season Archie Thompson was meant to be mostly a bench player but scored 10 goals or so, and then they stopped playing him because he was going to push him over the cap?

And isn't bonuses such as goal bonuses the reason why the cap is monitored monthly, and why certain teams go over some months but not others? And isn't that in essence what happened to Perth when they got caught out (on top of Andy Keogh's Fashion Show)?

I almost certainly could be wrong. But I thought goal bonuses in particular were still a big thing.
