AFLX, the League's high-octane version of the sport, will debut on February 15 next year with the AFL including traditional soccer and rugby venues among the venues for three separate round-robin tournaments. AFL.com.au can exclusively reveal that Adelaide will host the first round-robin at Hindmarsh Stadium on a Thursday night, the week before the JLT Community Series begins.

I just think the sport will be just terrible. Its just going to be like basketball with 1/4 of the skill. Which is what makes basketball great. Its just going to be a high scoreing mess.

Oh dear This is just embarrassing. This can only do more harm than good to AFL. Announced in the the days after we make the world cup and kicking off in a world cup year. Yeah, this will stop all those extra kiddies running off to play stupid soccer.

+xIt's a joke on all fronts. Just another way for afl to flood the calandar and drown out any other competition. Its really gotten the same reception as the intentional rules in Victoria. The usual media outlets think its a complete joke and most comment on the fact they it does just appear to be a way to block out other sports.

Besides access to juniour grounds I really don't see what's in this even for the AFL. Why would fans of AFL get on board with this bastardisation? BBL 50/50 is still at least the same game but shorter for today's distraction addled brains. I don't hate the sport of aussie rules like a lot of others and grew up watching it (edit for cred - football was always no.1 by a mile) but god damn I hate the AFL

From enticing people who have never played the Aussie rules before to become professionals to bastardizing their own game. Does not bode well for their ‘great game’.

Anything to be relevant

AFL fans themselves don't sound very keen on the idea of AFLX, if bigfooty forum is anything to go by.

I wonder if they will be giving away free tickets just so they can make look like people are loving their new concept.

It will be full and probably have free tickets. It will be interesting to see if we can put that "Strayans dont do midweek games" to bed. But with Power and Crows playing it should be a problem. AUSTRALIAN football is returning to Hindmarsh Stadium for the first time in a century with the start of the short-form AFLX competition in Adelaide. And there is a new “Showdown” as the Crows and Port Adelaide have been grouped together in the start of AFLX. The SA-based AFL clubs have been drawn with Collingwood, West Coast, Fremantle and Geelong to start the seven-a-side competition on Thursday, February 15.The new competition — in the lead-up to the AFL pre-season series — will have three grand finals, one for each of the six-team groups.Melbourne, North Melbourne, St Kilda, Carlton, Hawthorn and Essendon will play at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne on Friday, February 16.Sydney, GWS, Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, Richmond and Gold Coast will make up the third group playing a Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Saturday, February 17. Seven-a-side AFLX competition returning to Hindmarsh in February

Is it meant to be a tool to grow the game in regions where AFL is a niche sport like Sydney?

+xAFL fans themselves don't sound very keen on the idea of AFLX, if bigfooty forum is anything to go by. Why would you be? Its nothing more than a full-frontal assault on football and rugby league by the AFL hierarchy. Nothing to do with providing fans with entertainment or anything productive like that.

I say let it happen. If these gimmicks are necessary then your sport is a gimmick itself.

The reference point here is the success of Twenty20 cricket. Now, if that's the AFL goal then let's look at the consequences. http://www.firstpost.com/firstcricket/sports-news/t20-cricket-has-destroyed-west-indies-cricket-sir-garfield-sobers-2478570.htmlI am a mad cricket fan but big bash is the biggest joke to exist. It's a commercial wankfest. Not a sport. What happens when the big bash is not fast enough. 10s? 5s? C'mon.

+xI say let it happen. If these gimmicks are necessary then your sport is a gimmick itself. Its seems like it will get messy. There are rules here http://www.worldfootynews.com/article.php/2017111720295182I was wondering what they would do if the ball goes out. It seems good they have no marks for backward kicks and no VAR. But...... because you get a free kick if the ball goes out from touching the opponent, wouldnt you just run it down the sideline and f*** it into someone and keep trying to get freekicks. Likewise, from a kick in just try to target the ball as close to the sideline as possible then whack it into someones hands to go out for a freekick. Or it just ends up like a sort of volleyball thing with people punching the ball all the time or tapping down it down to players. They wont get big marks at all.

I suppose the only difference between AFLX and Twenty20 is that AFLX doesn't have an international setup to destroy.

I hope people enjoy watching the U18's play, because there is no way the seniors are going to be caught up in this nonsense. Unless AFL HQ holds a gun to clubs heads and forces them to play.

Val Migliaccio, Soccer Writer, The Advertiser THE AFL hiring Hindmarsh Stadium to unveil the experimental “Twenty20” version of its traditional game two days before Adelaide United plays for A-League points has left soccer officials baffled. AFLX will be rolled out for the first time as a pre-season trial on Thursday, February 15 — barely 48 hours before Adelaide United plays its Round 19 fixture against Central Coast Mariners on the Saturday night. Football Federation Australia officials and Adelaide chairman Greg Griffin could not understand why the Reds — the sole tenants of Hindmarsh Stadium — weren’t notified before the AFL made the announcement on Friday. And Griffin added Adelaide hasn’t been told whether the club will have access to its regular pre-game training session at Hindmarsh the day before facing the Mariners. Griffin has called for the State Government to intervene. Hindmarsh Stadium’s landlord Adelaide Venue Management Corporation has the Minister for Tourism Leon Bignell leading its structure followed by the AVMC board and chief executive Anthony Kirchner. “The government owns this stadium and they should just say this (AFLX) is not on,” Griffin said. “And the Sports Minister should be standing up for soccer for a change. “He should be defending soccer fans. “I’m not sure if we’re able to train there a day before the match. “We may have to make alternative arrangements and the government should pay for those alternative arrangements “The first I heard about was I read it on an AFL press release. “Not a single word has been said (by AVMC). “We are the only tenant, once or twice a year Football Federation SA and the SA amateur soccer league hire the ground for finals.” Griffin said the Foo Fighters rock concert which is at the venue on January 23 was never an issue after the AVMC had contacted the club and the fact the Reds’ next home match wasn’t until February 3. FFA head of A-League and W-League Greg O’Rourke was also perplexed by the decision for Hindmarsh to host exhibition AFLX matches within two days of a serious soccer match. “The FFA was aware via media reports that the AFLX concept of playing on rectangular football (soccer) fields was a possibility for 2018,’’ he said. Adlung's goal of the year nomination “The Hyundai A-League draw was finalised and published in June 2017 well before this week’s announcement from the AFL and as such we also read about the venue selection for the first time in the media. “The AFLX fixture played at Coopers Stadium is naturally of concern for us given the venue has no experience with the impact of AFLX. “We will be contacting the venue to ensure the pitch is up to standard for the Hyundai A-League match 48 hours later.” The AFLX exhibition matches will have six AFL teams including SA’s Crows and Port Adelaide use the Hindmarsh pitch for seven-a-side matches. They are expected to use the pitch for about 180 minutes in a round robin format — 90 minutes longer than the Reds’ clash against Mariners. And it’s not known whether the six AFL teams will be collectively using the two dressing rooms at Hindmarsh after United was denied access to double headers for their A-League and W-League teams this season because of the shortage of fixed change rooms. Bignell was contacted by text message but was yet to respond. Kirchner declined to comment.

The other codes, especially AFL, just laugh in footballs face over the continued shite administration. Here they are bitching over AFL’s use of a stadium the code used to own but stuffed it all up and sold it off to become the tenant not the landlord.
Suck it up AU, this is what happens when your code is run badly for decades and you’re up against a code that’s run really well.
The best chance of getting a new rectangular stadium or upgrading Hindmarsh is if AFLX is a runaway success, it won’t happen for football because the code couldn’t organise a piss up in a brewery and the fans are too friggin precious to actually bother supporting the code.
