MELBOURNE CITY LINKED WITH US-BASED AUSSIE

By

United States-based Australian defender Harrison Delbridge has been linked with a move to Melbourne City, according to American reports.

The Sydney-born 25-year-old is currently on the books of second tier USL club FC Cincinnati, having gone to college at the Appalachian State University.

According to Cincinnati.com, Delbridge harbours Socceroos ambitions and wants to play in the A-League to enhance his chances of selection.

Delbridge has played for Cincinnati since 2016 and was named in the USL All-League Team in both 2016 and 2017.

The Australian, who never represented his country at any under-age level, made 36 appearances in all competitions this year.

If you get a player who is good enough to start I dont see the problem. Also if he doesnt go to MC hopefully some hype can get him a chance at another club.

So he plays for one of the 38 tier 2 clubs in the US.  If he was good enough wouldn't he have been picked up by an MSL club by now?

Sources: Harrison Delbridge won't return to FC Cincinnati and he's not going to MLS

FC Cincinnati head coach John Harkes and defender Harrison Delbridge react to being named grand marshals for Oktoberfest Zinzinnati. The Enquirer/Patrick Brennan

Harrison Delbridge has played his last soccer match for Futbol Club Cincinnati.

Multiple sources close to the situation told The Enquirer Delbridge is moving on from the Queen City and will make the jump to Melbourne City FC of the A-League, Australia's first-division league.

Delbridge, a native Australia, was long considered one of FC Cincinnati's top talents and a likely candidate to move to a Major League Soccer club.

It's believed Delbridge has Australian national team aspirations, the sources said, and playing in his home country would increase his chances for senior national team appearances.

It's also believed Delbridge's departure could trigger further FC Cincinnati personnel moves as the club revamps its roster ahead of the 2018 season.

Delbridge, a fan favorite and one of the Queen City's original soccer heroes, made nearly 70 appearances in all competitions during his time with FC Cincinnati and scored four goals in league play.

Delbridge was a stalwart defender and was twice voted a USL First Team selection by United Soccer League media.

Melbourne City FC is coached by renowned managed Warren Joyce and has been home to some of the country's greatest players.

The team's parent club is Manchester City FC of the English Premier League.

So he plays for one of the 38 tier 2 clubs in the US.  If he was good enough wouldn't he have been picked up by an MSL club by now?

He went through the college system which seems to delay breaking into the professional ranks and then has moved in the USL and been the best defender in those 38 clubs over the last two years.
I am not sure how the quality of the league he has been compares to the A-league but I would think a player like Delbridge who is a star at that level would be of A-league quality.
The talk a while back was he was going to go to a MSL club at the end of his contract with Cincinnati, I think they were resigned to losing him but instead it looks like he wants to come to the A-league.
The two other questions are whether Melbourne City is the right team to join and is he anywhere near good enough for the Socceroos.

City are playing Malik and Jakobsen as midfielders, La Rocca had a shocker on weekend, Sckenveld has played quite a bit at RB, so one way or another there might be an opening.

He would have to come in and be clearly the best Aussie CB in the league to have a chance.

I would like him to get a chance, rather him playing than La Rocca but this might a sign Joyce doesn't rate him.

While criticism of their contract system among other things is valid, there is a lot to admire about football in America lately, especially in Cincinnati, who are averaging over 21k in the second division in just their second season of play, and made the semi final of their 104 year old US Open Cup. This video by FIFA was made during their first season last year:

Exactly. Unless this guy is a gun I doubt his ceiling is higher than Tongyiks. They're both aussies so I guess it doesn't matter from a national perspective, but best case scenario would have been Delb breaking into the MLS and Tongyik starting for city.

I follow Jake Edwards on twitter. He is the Greg O'Rouke of the USL. Plenty of stuff happening all the time. Las Vegas and 2 other teams have been announced for next year I think and 2 more the year after and Atlana setting up a ii team. They are moving foward at a rapid pace and it seems cities are lining up to have teams and build stadiums.
