OK, peoples.

12 teams.

How many rounds?

Surely it has to be 33+finals.

They can't be that stupid to keep it a 27 round league.

thats the main reason why i want a 12 team league. I would rather we stay at 12 teams until the second division is strong enough to just promote teams

Until it happens im not holding my breath.
But at least a timeline has been set.

Wasn't the franchise model 'broken' so we couldn't expand?
Whats changed in 12 months?

Ffa are using the last thing they have up their sleeve, why do it 12 months ago when you can drag it out another yr and get away with it?

What will happen is the 2 new teams will come in and the ffa will just sit back and say ok that covers our asses for the next 5-6 years.

We will be sitting here in 2023 with the same problems

Interesting that they announce the long delayed expansion just as the FIFA execs are about to arrive and question, amongst other things, the slow progress of the game...

No doubt they will have their hand-picked, preferred 'bids' already selected (rumours earlier in the week that a South Sydney option has already been agreed) - and will push them through before FIFA removes them from power.

Band-aid solution for our problems in the end, expansion was overdue but the FFA are missing the bigger picture here, where is the direction in the game for the next 10 to 20 years? How or if when will the 2nd division and pro-rel come into play, they talked about the operating model but with little to no information on how this all looks like.

How do we connect the A-league with the NPL model and onto the grassroots with our ever large grassroots community? (which has been mentioned about 33 times by the FFA)

They mention expansion because of poor metrics and crowds? Copy and paste this and show this to aspiring business students and what a reactive organisation looks like.

Ive studied reactive organisations during uni days but gee i think the FFA tops the cake of how a reactive organisation looks like, don't know why to laugh or cry....

This is something to celebrate. The two teams that come in will be from really strong bids, potentially giving the competition the same shot in the arm that the Wanderers did. Of course we want 16 teams (I'd prefer 18 for a 34 round season; the absolute shortest a football league season should be), and a second division, but at least things are beginning to move in the right direction. Keep pushing for further expansion, and I'm sure we'll see more bids that will do exactly that.

For me, the next on the agenda is absolutely a second division with promotion and relegation, which means we probably need to look at a "30 team" A-League model for the future (16 in the top division and 14 in the bottom).

This is a positive step though. Let's keep making some noise!

It's pouring more fuel on to the same fire though - the FFA have already publicly stated that the current franchise model is broken, yet are willing to bring in two more organisations under the same structure.

I suspect they announced Southern Sydney and the 2nd Brisbane are good to go, alot of this selection criteria is huff and puff to appease the apologists (and the small part of FIFA coming to town again)

They could have announced the criteria last year, but the excuse of the 'congress' stuff was there to be used.

The FFA do as they please without any transparency, without any accountability.

It couldn't possibly be that they waited until WC qualification was assured so that they would definitely have a budget boost to ensure being able to fund expansion?

Oh crap. Lost my tinfoil hat there for a second and some logic crept in.

Well its a step in the right direction at least. Ideally we need 16 team top division playing each other home and away. Hopefully they can approve the second division at the same time and we can start building up second tier teams to be ready for promotion

Interesting press release and maybe I am reading too much into it but what made for me anyway this release different to the many before is.

"""The Board also agreed in principle to create a new corporate framework for the A-League/W-League which could give clubs more input over the running of the league""'

"""The existing Hyundai A-League/Westfield W-League clubs and FFA’s Member Federations will be invited to participate in discussions regarding the formation of the framework"""

Does that mean the start to an independent Hal run by the clubs.

""""to define the terms of reference of the Congress review working group"""

This in a practical sense is IMO a big nay massive change, as previously the changes were said to only be about governance issues only... what does or could this mean... Terms of Reference  is such a board term in theory it could be a little as who can vote for FFA members to a restructure of the league....

As I said this release IMO is different to others in that the direction of Football in Australia is changing and no other release has come within light years of this... then again the Tooth Fairy  and Santa maybe  true ... just maybe things will change...

Whilst I'm not sold on the idea of expansion without achieving that through promotion.

The time to strike is now for Tasmania with the chaos in AFL circles down here, but I wonder if the press release from FFTAS earlier in the week is a reaction to being told no to a Tassie side.

Exactly. I cant stomach the thought of next season

And where do these new 36 players come from? Oh that's right, each club has to give up 3-4 players and spread the weight of the league a bit to make clubs 11 and 12 competitive

@ bluebird

Where do all these players come from (all 30 of them plus 10 visa players).

Well the NPL can provide some, it’s awash with talent isn’t it?

There’s over 100 Aussie’s playing professional football overseas, some of those will come back?

There’s a massive youth population coming through and aren’t we always saying give youth a go?

If we can’t find 30 Aussie’s for two new teams we can pack up now ... getting players will be easy.

Are the fans there is the big question?

Football Federation Australia (FFA) and A-League club owners have agreed on the formation of a new strategic committee to govern how the competition is run.

Following an historic meeting of owners in Sydney on Thursday, FFA announced the creation of the joint A-League Strategic Committee (JALSC), to be chaired by FFA deputy chairman Brian Schwartz.

Two other FFA directors and three A-League club chairmen - decided by the clubs - will be appointed to the six-member body, which will meet every two months.

Thursday's meeting came after growing concern from club owners over the lack of transparency and accountability of the governing body and a desire to have more say in how the league is run.

FFA chairman Frank Lowy said there was now a "united stance" while FFA chief executive Ben Buckley believed the formation of the committee would given the game's investors the hands-on role they desired.

"I think it will go a long way to addressing the issues they have about having a more direct say into the policy formation of the A-League," Buckley said.

The FFA spent $20m on consultancy fees. Even if they just halved that and started doing some of their own work, that would comfortably cover two new teams.

The spend on consultants by the FFA was $3.2m.  It normally is around $2m but was increased by spending on consultants for the broadcast rights and on the website and logo refresh.  The $20m figure isn't correct.

I wonder if there have been any group of consultants who, when consulted, advised spending less on consultancy?
