Tragedy: Josip Simunic’s Daughter Passes Away by croatiaweekApril 5, 2018
Condolences have been flooding in for former Croatian football international Josip Simunic and his wife Christina with the news that their young daughter has passed away.
Luciana Simunic (3) passed away on Easter Sunday at the Zagreb Clinic for Infectious Diseases after a short illness.
The funeral was held on Thursday in the Croatian capital.
“The Croatian football federation and the whole football family express their sincere sympathy and support to Josip Simunic and his family.
At Zagreb’s Mirogoj cemetery, many members of the football family – including management and workers from HNS, former and current internationals and coaches of the Croatian National Team, and many others were in attendance for the final farewell,” the Croatian football federation said in a statement. https://www.croatiaweek.com/tragedy-josip-simunics-daughter-passes-away/

Lost for words when I hear of the death of a child. It’s the worst thing that can happen. Condolences to the family.

Poor Luciana. Three years old. That's cruel beyond belief to leave us so little. Thoughts and prayers with Josip and Christina. No parent should have to deal with this.

He played youth football in Australia. He played in and won a championship in the NSL. He is what I argue one of the best ever Australian products. He is a very important reference point when talking about junior development and grassroots pathways in Australian Football. And is the owner of arguably the most interesting story in our nations World Cup history, with his 3 yellow cards. This stays in AF. And on topic - I am genuinely shaken from this. I wish him and his family all the best.

I wish him and his family all the best. The way people talk of him it's as if he turned his back on Australia, went to Croatia and never turned back. Not true at all. He still maintains a residence in Canberra and lives there out of season. I was mates with a relo of his when I lived there. People have their perceptions but to me he's just passionate about his heritage. No article about him is going to do justice, you need to put the effort in and get to know what makes him tick. A lot is made of his "defection" if you call it that, but the point you make about the AIS is a really important one. He wanted to play for Australia. That's straight from the horse's mouth. The falling out with AIS was what changed it all. It's really sad what happened to his daughter. :(

I never thought I'd feel any sympathy for him but losing your little girl would have to be one of the cruellest things that could happen in life. Tragic news
