+x+xMark Viduka played for Celtic Not for 10 years! It was time for Rogic to test himself elsewhere, but I guess he's lazy and didn't want to rock the boat. Pity. This mentality is so off the mark it's not funny. Ignoring the fact that maybe he's happy playing for a huge club and getting European Football every year, he's not ready for the Premier League. Rogic has only just started playing 80+ minutes every week and that's because Brendan Rogers and the Celtic Coaching Staff have been managing his workload so well over the last two seasons. They have carefully built him up from a crippled inexperienced boy with serious doubts on his long term prospects into an absolute Hunskelper. They were loyal to him, even when he demanded a loan to Australia to make the 2014 WC Squad and fucked his groin up even further. This contract is Rogic repaying them for that by ensuring Celtic get a good transfer fee if he leaves. Now he needs one more full pre-season, 35+ games in Scotland and a strong performance in the 8-10 CL Qualifier and Group Stage games. After that, he'll be ready to go.

If he goes to an English team, you're soon forgotten after you leave. I don't think many on here understand what Celtic is, a club equal to Man Utd in the UK, a club with a following so huge that it holds every European attendance record. Yep. Obviously we don't know for certain but I'd love to think he's hanging around because he loves the club and the fans.

+xWho, in the fuck, is his manager? 5 years in a dead-end league? Come on are you serious? This is a classic tactic by clubs that feel as tho the player's value is going to explode. Basically they are prepping themselves for potential buyers in order to get a good price for the player as hes now on a long term contract. The fact that hes signed a 5 yr deal doesnt mean by any means that he's going ro be sticking round for longer than a season or 2 necessarily.

+xThere's just that unfortunate Scottish tune to it. 'It's Scotland though.' he doesn't particularly do well in European competition. I'd like to see him against better opponents with better team mates around him.Scotland shouldn't be the long term goal. Keep him doing well until the Asian Cup then perhaps a move Summer 2019 or 2020. But one should strike the iron while hot. This new deal shows Celtic will probably demand a massive fee meaning half the Bundesliga are unlikely to pay it. The risk of bigger clubs is he'll be benched more often. Yeah but if he stays on a couple more seasons he'll get that consistency he'll need for that EPL team that does have those better team mates _I feel_ he deserves around him. He could very easily go to some no name club full of no names and end up in no mans land like so many of the others have. Not saying he would but its a huge risk at this stage of his career imo. Will help cement those 'known qualities' so a team like Arsenal/Liverpool/Everton/Bournmouth know what they're getting before he gets there.

Celtic are one of the biggest clubs in the world. That is a fact. The Scottish domestic league is not as good as the big 5 European leagues but it still has some very strong teams. Aside from the fact Toms shown great character and loyalty, the decision to re-sign is a reasonable career move.

He looks like another Aussie player who's chosen comfort zone over advancement. He's 25 already so if he was serious about being the best player he could be he'd be looking to move on from Scotland immediately. That's fair enough. It's his life and he has to do what makes him happy. It's just disappointing to see another Aussie settle for less. The contrast with the Japanese is stark. They are placing their players in good leagues all over Europe. Perhaps there's a collective mentality that has them willing to accept discomfort. It's one of the reasons I think the gap between Australia and Japan will only widen in the next decade - in Japan's favour.

an injury prone Aussie player who has not (yet) reached the heights his potential suggests signs a five year contract with one of the biggest clubs in the world....you'd think there would be more positivity to this.

Managers are in the game of getting the biggest payout for their charges, but also a good manager will push the client into a bigger league. Celtic & Rangers are the two teams that can dream of mixing it in Europe and after being taken to the cleaners while playing at home Celtic just showed the gap between the Scot league and everyone else. So I think the manager is doing pretty much nothing for his client's skill set, but if all you want to be is a hero in a league where you dominate but no-one outside of Scotland cares, go ahead.

Dont think this is bad news at all, word from his missus is that they got offered money that was too good to turn down, considerably more than what he was being offered in england.
Smart business from celtic though, by offering that money that they’ll likely never have to pay, they’ve ensured themselves a big return on investment.
Also shows the faith that Rodgers has in Rogic to be a key player for them in the champions league.
IMO a strong world cup and another strong full season at celtic and he’ll be highly in demand at age 26 coming into his peak.

I think its a great move before he wins another trophy tonight against Motherwell. And he'll be ready for a great World Cup, settled and keen to put in for the team.

He's had many confidence building things happen @ Celtic, remarkebly only SINCE Rodgers took over. Don't blame him for staying :D

+x+x"Smart business from celtic though, by offering that money that they’ll likely never have to pay" ??? I think what was meant is the big weekly wage offered for 5 years but if they sell him after 2 so they don't have to actually pay 5 years worth of wages.

Aside from the fact Toms shown great character and loyalty, the decision to re-sign is a reasonable career move. Looking at how those clubs do in europe (knocked out by teams from malta, lithuania, luxembourg) I'd say no. The Scottish league is ranked outside yhe top 20 leagues in europe, deservedly so.

Another article with regards to Rogic's deal with Celtic. Sounds like he really likes/loves being at Celtic, and possibly be staying for a wee bit longer.

But the Scottish league is just so fucking shit. We're talking almost a-league level. I'm worried he'll stagnate playing against Kilmarnock and Hamilton Academicals week in week out for such a long time. I'm glad he's happy and loyal to Celtic, but I don't see this as a positive for his long-term development at all. It won't challenge him to become a better player.

Who knows if he can have a cracking world cup and continue his form to the next season, maybe he can follow the likes of Wanyama and Van Dyk and move to a prem league on a big transfer fee, otherwise he would have been off contract and Celtic would make no ROI on him anyway.
So we should just trust the process and see how everything will unfold, but we all want him at big club or league at least that's for sure.

I would like to know the last Australian player who has played for 1 big European club for more than 3-4"years, even in the golden generation most of our player's were playing at low level epl clubs.
Cahill played for a half decent Everton team, while the likes of Viduka had 3 average EPL clubs bar 1 year at Leeds. Neill at Blackburn & West Ham relegation candidates, Kewell would of been the one if not for injury. These are some of our best ever player's & people think Celtic is below Rogic.
It sounds to me like people in Australia think Celtic are the lucky ones to have Rogic, I think it's Rogic, who is lucky to have Celtic.

Celtic are a massive club, and he has a chance to be a legend of that club. That's actually pretty appealing.
Also gets to win trophies and get a free pass to the Champions League every year, so there are definitely positives.
And if he has a monster World Cup, or has a big Champions League campaign one year, there will be plenty of options for him if he wants them.
