Burger King 'sorry' for offering burgers to women who get pregnant to World Cup players

Updated

Fast food chain Burger King has apologised for offering a lifetime supply of Whopper burgers to Russian women who get pregnant to World Cup players.

Key points:

  • Burger King offered 3m roubles and a lifetime supply of Whoppers to women impregnated by a World Cup player
  • Critics called the ad demeaning
  • The fast food chain previously included a likeness of an alleged rape victim in its advertising

Critics assailed the offer, announced on Russian social media, as sexist and demeaning.

The post was removed from Burger King's social media accounts on Tuesday (local time) but was still circulating among Russian social network users.

It promised a reward of free burgers to women who get "the best football genes" and "ensure the success of the Russian team for generations to come".

Women would also receive 3 million roubles ($64,000) under the offer, according to The Guardian.

In a statement a day after the offer was taken down, Burger King said "we are sorry about the clearly offensive promotion that the team in Russia launched online".

It said the offer "does not reflect our brand or our values and we are taking steps to ensure this type of activity does not happen again".

Advertisements in Russia often play on sexist stereotypes, notably ads around sporting events like the World Cup.

Women's rights activists have been increasingly speaking out against them.

Last year for the Confeds Cup I bought an Australia scarf and hoped to do the same at the world cup, but not only has the Aussie merch here sold like a god church, it's like God himself: nonexistent.

It's weird now being at a game without a scarf. Hope I can get one in Sochi.

The solution is to buy a scarf from another country and do a swap with an Aussie fan.

Look up Hans Jörg Butt. Takes a penalty as a keeper then takes forever to get back and concedes from the kick off.

One of my favourites. But nothing can unseat Alex Stepney for Man U. Screamed at his back 4 so much that he dislocated his jaw and had to go off (no subs either).

Agree that the genre of the official world cup song is off the mark, but I have to pay credit where it's due, the "ooh ooh ooh" bridge part goes down really well with the crowds at the live sites once they have enough beers in, and will be a memory I'll take with me from this.

We were part of the Green & Gold Army. They "gave" each person 2 scarves in their pack which was a brilliant idea. We had 3 to swap, one each game. The only scarves we saw for sale were in St Petersberg, if you are still there.

Love seeing all the different teams and the differing styles of play.

The WC is so much more interesting  than club football IMO.

FIFA has sent a letter to the president of the Football Association of Thailand offering its “deepest sympathies and support” to the families of young soccer players and their coach trapped in cave in the country’s north.

The letter signed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino also says the organization would like to invite the youngsters and their coach to the World Cup final in Russia, should they be rescued in time and are healthy enough to travel.

The letter says the team’s appearance at the final would “undoubtedly be a wonderful moment of communion and celebration.”

The boys have asked the navy SEALs taking care of them in the cave for details about what has happened in the World Cup since they got trapped June 23.

Saw some of the gaps the divers need to creep through. Fuck me. I generally don't get claustrophobia rather agoraphobia but those gaps are so small. Horrible and what the hell was the coach thinking? Caving is fun but with kids that's pretty extreme even in the season when it's permitted.

I'm padi certified for open water but cave diving is a level way above me. It's amazing that they're getting these kids trained up in these circumstances in this space of time. There are some non negotiable skills they need to get into them despite being with a buddy diver. Even more amazing because some can't swim so they don't have basically tuned instinctive responses against drowning.

Everyone involved in this is a hero.

Especially the bloke who died :(

When a former elite diver can't make it, you knew that the kids were in deep trouble.

Best game for me is probably Spain Portugal or France Argentina.

Worst game would be Egypt Saudi Arabia.

Really terrific. Safe, decent stadia that won't be white elephants in a genuine football country, top class transport infrastructure. I hope to go to every world cup for the rest of my days now, it's been a wonderful experience. Such a shame the next one is in Qatar. I see all the young people from all over the world mingling and having a great time at the games, on the streets, in the pubs and at the fan fests and shed a tear for the thought of what a good time all involved would have had in Australia, and for what a disaster it will be in Qatar.

Amazing experience at the World Cup in Russia, far better than Brazil and South Africa that's for sure. Everyone super friendly, well organized and extremely safe. Best holiday I have ever had. St Petersburg remains the best city I have visited.
