GCU might have found the Cash Gold Coast United’s case for an A-League return has been bolstered after securing in-principle backing from two American investors with links to clubs around the world.
The reformed franchise submitted its expression of interest in joining an expanded A-League to Football Federation Australia on Wednesday, and will be supported in the next part of the process by Brett Johnson and Jordan Gardner.
Johnson is co-chairman of second-tier US outfit Phoenix Rising, while Gardner is a shareholder in recently relegated English Premier League club Swansea City and co-owner of Irish side Dundalk.............
Gardner, meanwhile, has connections to the Peak6 investment firm, which has stakes in AS Roma, AFC Bournemouth and is in takeover talks with 10-time French champions Saint-Etienne....
Although it's also wait and see on the New Model “At this point in time the FFA have not released information pertaining to license fees and potential broadcast incomes so as a group we will have to take a look at the complete commercial proposition during the next phase.”

Tassie PitchWe’ll be turning people away from memberships, insist Tasmania’s A-League hopefulsThe neglected football frontier has 15,000 registered players and the financial largess of “football crazy” former Melbourne Victory board heavyweights Robert Belteky and Harry Stamoulis behind it. It also enjoys federal, state and local government backing, with the likelihood of approval for a new multi-purpose boutique stadium being granted imminently to provide the final crucial piece of the jigsaw.
Bid spokesperson Victoria Morton, head of South Hobart FC, believes Tasmania “has never been more ready”, confirming the consortium had registered their Expression of Interest with FFA well ahead of Thursday’s deadline. “Apart from the solid financial backing behind the bid we’ve got bi-partisan support from just about every politician in the state,” she said. “Football is the biggest participation sport among children in the state, and the participation rate is bursting at the seams. “Our financial backers are crazy about football and as a bid we think we’ll be turning people away from memberships because we won’t have enough seats in our facilities for them to watch.

A ' timely' Press releaseSouthern Expansion sign 'sister' agreement with Chinese Super League club Guizhou Hengfeng Southern chairman Morris Iemma said in a statement the club’s memorandum of understanding with Guizhou Hengfeng, would provide them with a pathway into the lucrative Chinese league.
“We are pleased that we’ve leveraged the commercial strength, football passion and geographic reach of our Chinese financial backers to forge this partnership with Guizhou Hengfeng,” Iemma said.
“Our main objective is for two clubs to provide leadership in football in both Australia and China, building solid links between our respective senior and academy teams and between our two countries.
Football provides amazing opportunities for Australia to engage our largest regional trading partner at a social level and with the recent purchase of a large portion of the club, we are now commercial and sporting brothers.
“When we consider the recent efforts by AFL to penetrate the Chinese sporting market, our ownership of a Chinese and, we hope, Australian professional football club creates a ground-breaking partnership for Australian government and FFA to create meaningful relationships, programs and future initiatives. “We are very excited about the potential to integrate our football with China’s in substantive ways, to ride the economic wave the game is undertaking in the world’s most populous nation.”

We're down to 12 ? but that's according to everyones favorite 442 Journo Lucas Radbourne-Pugh
Today is FFA's official deadline for Expressions of Interest and up to 12 expansion candidates are reportedly set to submit their bids.Among the eager throng are familiar bids from former NSL heavyweights South Melbourne, Wollongong Wolves and Brisbane City, but there's going to be a lot of new faces at the first day of school.
Bids from Dandenong's Team 11, Southern NSW's Southern Expansion, Fremantle City, Canberra, South West Sydney, Geelong's Victoria Patriots and West Melbourne are also on the table, while there's also a rumoured bid from Tasmania.
City's major rival, Brisbane Strikers, recently withdrew their bid due to "uncertainty" regarding FFA's expansion criteria, however they are, so-far, the only club to do so. Between four and six bids will be shortlisted by FFA next month and asked to submit detailed proposals, which will allow FFA to scrutinise funding and board arrangements, among other factors.
FFA will then announce the decision in October, allowing two successful clubs one-year in preparation before the commencement of the 2019/20 A-League season with 12 clubs.

+x+xFor some reason the Geelong Advertiser has deleted this article Lol what a farce - then again, it was never a 'Geelong' bid, it was some mutant Greater Western Victoria nonsense. Why do these people try and get involved in football? Honestly nfi I guess Greater Western Victoria sounds better than Victoria Patriots, but then again...

+xIpswich would be even smaller than the Mariners in terms of #metrix Slightly larger population in the ABS region based on Ipswich and growing six times faster than Central Coast, another 160k just up the highway in Toowoomba and 1.8m just to the east of it. For comparison its population is growing by the same number as Camden in South West Sydney and about 2/3 of Wyndam in Melbourne.

+x+x+xSouth Melbourne ConspiracyI wonder who at SBS is behind it ? Victorian football club South Melbourne believe that a story that has surfaced today on SBS is part of a campaign to “throw shade” at the club with the intent to hijack its bid to enter the A-League. Two days before the A-League aspirant clubs submit their bid vying over the two upcoming A-League licences, SBS uploaded a news article on their website “targeting Hellas” according to South Melbourne’s head of Legal and Public Relations and the chairman of their A-League bid committee, Bill Papastergiadis. In the headline and the introduction of the published story, it is stressed that South Melbourne denies any connection with a soccer agent accused of illicit behaviour.“ The person in question is involved with dozens of soccer clubs promoting junior players overseas”, Mr Papastergiadis told Neos Kosmos adding that said person bears no relation to South Melbourne and its A-League bid.“ We have no connection to the person that has been accused of such misconduct. In Melbourne they attended our press conference with Roberto Carlos because the Brazilian national had employed them as their translator.”This was not the only event the accused was present, however, “He has also attended another A-League aspirant club’s event where the Victorian Premier was present,” Mr Papastergiadis added making it clear that South Melbourne is being “shaded” because it’s a “strong” candidate.“How do you explain that every other news outlet ignored the allegations?” he stressed explaining that even in the SBS piece there is no mention of South Melbourne or any of its members being involved in any way with the accused’s alleged misconduct. The guy who put up the article seems to be pro team11 based on his twitter history. Excellent Soap Opera I was wondering if it was the Fozzie/Southern connection at SBS, Yours is better Well it could be a bit of both.

@miron Add to that how can anyone bid for a place in the HAL ,when they have absolutley no idea what their costs and revenue will be?Surely the size of the licence fee ,for example ,could knock out every bid.

Why would you want spend big dollars to bid when no one knows if the FFA are even going to be in charge in a few months or if they are who they will be made up of ? Surely we need to know who is running things before these bids can be serious ? Anyone heard anymore on the subject of FFA control ?

Southern Expansions Sales Pitch From this mornings bumped thread of a year ago “Firstly, football is about competition and the Sydney Southern region and the South Coast are an extremely important stakeholder and partner,” Craig Foster said speaking to FourFourTwo.“ A third metropolitan and regional club delivers six more derbies a year. Where is all of our best crowds, engagement, excitement and atmosphere coming from the game right now? It is in our derbies.
So, in fact what would happened is that everyone would benefit including Sydney FC.“
Secondly instead of saying who wants to bid for a club, we’d be better off asking where are the key markets with massive participation, huge population base, massive business and corporate support that are currently underserviced, where the potential for massive growth and uplift in crowds and infrastructure is huge?“ One of them is the southern Sydney region. The game is not doing a good enough job in one of our key participant areas and one of the biggest population centres in all of our country in the biggest city.”
The executive of the NSW PCYC, Chris Gardiner, is also part of the bid while the licence is being financially guaranteed by property giant the JiaYuan Group from Zhejiang, China with $12 million guaranteed in capital.
With those kinds of finances and plans for a purpose-built football stadium in the region, Foster says the Southern Expansion bid should lift the bar when it comes to the FFA’s final criteria.

Team 11 project officer Matt Windley said the south-east bid was “more than a football bid”. “There’s 1.5 million people in the south-east that don’t have a professional club training and playing here,” Windley said. “A stadium in Dandenong would be a community hub with greater usage than just football and the Casey Fields academy will provide a pathway to professionalism that has never existed here. “So many of our local clubs — at all levels — are incredibly supportive. “The sport has the ability to unite what is one of the most multicultural regions in the country like nothing else can.”

+x South Melbourne bid chairman Bill Papastergiadis said the club’s rich NSL history and existing infrastructure were keys. “South Melbourne is arguably Australia’s most successful football club. We are ready now,” he said. “What sets South Melbourne apart from most bids is that it has an exclusive 40-year lease, on excellent terms, of the boutique state of the art Lakeside Stadium and it’s the only one from Victoria which boasts such a boutique football ground. “The facilities also include South Melbourne’s own social club (300-seater) futsal centre, club museum and administrative offices. “With over 9000 members and arguably the best public transport infrastructure to service the stadium, we’re best placed to serve the growing population of Melbourne.
“Add the fact that our men’s and women’s junior teams have won practically all the titles in the NPL, we are ‘fit and prepared’.”
Even with all this its probably still not viable without serious big time backing in the current model, good luck to the rest who dont even have a venue. Has to be a better way.

+xAt the end of the day the FFA are only going to pick two. Strikers have just said there are plenty of people out there with bigger pockets than us that the FFA will likely so why throw further money at the attempt.
From the FFAs point of view they can pick who they want. In the meantime the process is flushing out areas and regions that have an interest and some dollars, whether private or government. The FFA should be talking to all the unsuccessful bidders and see how and when they can get a guernsey. It also allows the FFA to keep their NPL opponents at bay by saying all these bids are better funded.
Time to go FFA!!! My understanding is that finding all the potential bids (even if they are not ready yet), is what the EOI stage of the expansion process is for. If they are smart they will keep all the losing bids engaged either through announcing a second tier or another round of expansion.

Slightly off-topic hypothetical. I wonder what would happen if the FFA came out and said we are starting a 2nd div in 2020 and ran a similar EOI and proposal process. How many of the above bidders would opt to enter a 2nd div first rather than the top flight? How many other bidders would there be? At this point in time, is there actually more demand for a second div than demand for top-flight teams?
