I wish last Sunday's article by Robbie Slater was true. It'd be great to have Dwight back in Sydney. let's face it, the Newcastle night life hardly fits his "all night" image.
Would Dwight be a Kossie type of player though...???

if it is true hope he goes well but i think there could be problems bubbling underneath the surface at the jets. the jets owner is known for being a tight ass when it comes to money so i don't think he will sign for the jets .

now thats an understatement.
BTW, its con constantine havent you learnt that already?

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

i couldnt understand how we could afford him-BUT THEN-maybe con is thinking ahead(wisely) about the fact that with the whole city currently pissed off at our 'crowd fav'and the team in such pitiful form, how are we going to make money from gate receipts...I KNOW-we'll get a player who will attract people and influence the team. (*just a thought).

Yorke is not coming to the Jets... It's a former Premier League player now playing in another league. See below story:

http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/football/a-league/sydney-still-in-title-hunt-says-kosmina/2008/11/23/1227375062272.html

Quote:
There were some suggestions at the weekend that former Sydney FC star Dwight Yorke might be arriving in the Hunter to replace Zura, but club officials have scotched those rumours, saying Yorke's preference to play as a holding midfielder these days did not suit the team's needs.

Instead, a former English Premier League striker, who is a current international and plays for a major club in a European league, is close to agreeing terms with the Jets, and could possibly arrive as early as the match against Queensland Roar in Brisbane on December 14. Whether the player is signed as a guest player or a marquee player remains an issue, and will depend on the club being able to change the terms of Mark Milligan's contract, but the Jets are focused on keeping him for the first phase of the ACL campaign, which kicks off in March.

Newcastle Jets expect Dwight Yorke decision today
BY JAMES GARDINER
26/11/2008 4:00:00 AM
THE Newcastle Jets are awaiting an answer today from former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke on a six-month deal to become the club's marquee player.

Owner Con Constantine confirmed last night that the Jets were in discussions with Yorke, who led Sydney to the inaugural A-League title and has spent the past two seasons at English Premier League club Sunderland.

"Yes, we are talking to Dwight and hope to have an answer in the next 24 hours," Constantine told The Herald .

Constantine would not reveal the details of the offer, but it is understood the deal would be for the rest of this season and the Jets' Asian Champions League campaign.

Joel Griffiths assumes marquee status from the start of the 2009-10 A-League season.

Jets high-performance manager Ian Crook worked with Yorke at Sydney and has been carrying out negotiations.

The Jets have been without a marquee player since the return to Ecuador of Edmundo Zura on November 2.

In the past, Constantine had been against signing a top-end marquee player.

But the Jets' journey into Asia and the $20 million on offer in prizemoney has resulted in a backflip.

Regarded as one of the world's premier strikers in his prime, Yorke, 37, has played predominantly in midfield for Sunderland.

He left Sydney FC for the Black Cats on a $500,000 transfer in 2006, reuniting with former Manchester United teammate and Sunderland manager Roy Keane.

He has played 55 games since his arrival at the Stadium of Light, but only four this season.

He was man of the match in a 1-1 draw with Arsenal on October 4.

His ongoing international commitments with Trinidad and Tobago have raised the ire of Keane, and the English media have reported that Sunderland would be prepared to let him go in the January transfer window.

Yorke has long been a fan of Australia, in particular Sydney, and this month was linked with a return to the Harbour City.

The Central Coast Mariners, who are bankrolled by Peter Turnbull, the man who brought Yorke to Sydney, also showed an interest in luring Yorke in March before he signed a one-year extension with Sunderland.

Yorke, whose reputation off the field matches that on it hence his All Night Dwight nickname would be by far the Jets' highest-profile signing.

But for all his partying he is also renowned as an ultimate professional and positive influence in the dressing room.

He captained Trinidad and Tobago to their first World Cup finals appearance in Germany in 2006.

Born in Canan, Yorke was signed as an 18-year-old by Aston Villa in 1989. He made his first-team debut against Crystal Palace and went on to play 232 games for Villa, scoring 73 goals.

He transferred to Manchester United for $29 million in August 1998. He helped guide the Red Devils to three successive premierships, including the treble premiership, FA Cup and Champions League in 1999.

He was sold to Blackburn in 2002 and had one year at Birmingham City in 2004 before joining Sydney.
