+x+x+x+xIn the past we have added excellent leadership and toughness via Bob McCarthy, Peter Kelly and Orge. Kelly and Ogre were big factors in our subsequent premiership success. Hannant, Eastwood, Frankly, Jammer and Ennis are examples of good recruitment. T-Rex, Woods, Seafood, Lichaa and a few others are examples of poor recruitment. Marhoney, Kicks and Preston are examples of good recruitment. I am focused on the fowards becuase that is one area where we are lacking. The problem with poor recruitments is when you feel you have to continue to play them in first grade, in the hope they come good. Guys like Lichaa should never have been kept in first grade. It was clear (at least to me and only after a few games) that he was rubbish. It was a criminal offence to have played him that long and Des should face multiple charges. Aaron Woods was poor but we managed to offload him. As bad as TRex was for his salary, he actually did some good things every 5 or 6 games. I never thought Licha was great in attack. But he was close to if not the best defensive hooker in the game. Unlike Ennis who was very poor. Hasler had a game plan that involved quick ball to the halves and huge edge forwards running off them. It worked very well.
Look at Foran and Fifita at the Titans. This is a typical Des combination. It’s a shame Des was sacked because of the over reactions of fans and the polish to board at the time. It set the club back ten plus years.
People love to blame Hasler. But he was the last coach to have us playing finals. And made two grand finals. He was snd still is a great coach. The wrap around plays where the forwards are involved are still being used today and is the main attack structure of Penrith the last five years.
Think about it this way. The last time Des was coaching us we won many more games than any coach since. With the team that Des built.
I feel the old quote about ‘don’t listen to the fans or you end up sitting in the stands with them’ applies to our club more than ever. Every board since we have been losing has been to reactive to the fans. Our board needs to ignore the fans and make smart not emotional decisions. Letting Avo go may turn out to be one of these decisions. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Des got pretty good results with the team Moore built. But from that point onwards our juniors, lower grades and NRL went backwards. Unless a club is the Roosters it is hard to build a premiership winning side via recruitment. Wok did that once when he inherited a lot of good backline talent and recuited mostly forwards. Lichaa was great in the lower grades playing as a running hooker in a 2 hooker rotation. Des bulked him up and turned him into an 80 minute defender, he lost a lot of pace, his running game disappeared and his passing was never great and didn't improve. Same with T-Rex Des tried to turn him into an 80 minute player and that was another square peg round hole disaster. Give Des 17 round pegs, that fit neatly into round holes, and he can coach. It has been a long road back because our lower grades were trashed, and the NRL side was full of over priced players on backended deals. I don't blame Des for all of that, he did a reasonable job of his job, but the rest of that regime was a disaster. Des had a fair bit of talent to work with a Manly last season, we will see if he getrs results at the Tits, and if they are in better shape after he leaves. No excuses they have a strong squad and a strong pipeline of talent coming through the grades. It is more of a question about why they haven't won a comp so far. I like your sentence about Des and the 17 round pegs and round holes. Spot on. I'll go one further and say that he only likes pegs that agree with him. Question his ways and you're on the outer...

Letting Avo go may turn out to be one of these decisions. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. Des was/is very 1 dimensional. The game has moved away from 1 dimensional gameplans. Des will be found out within 6 games at the Titans. The concern for us is we've held onto this 1 dimensional style of play. This time we do it with reliance on kicks. Until we get halves who can setup up breaks in the middle or fringes with passes, we will be pegged to bottom of ladder. Persisting with Burton in the halves is a risk in itself but failing to at least pair him with a recognised ball playing half is just about as criminal as it can get. As stupid as this may sound, we could have done with someone like Shuster who has good ball skills. I'm not advocating going for him, but someone of his skills who is actually a half. The decision to not have a serious play at Moses was a bad one. There was an opportunity to rectify the faith put on Burton in the halves but instead he will be left to prove to everyone once and for all that he is not suited to be in the halves. Des was and is far from one dimensional. But like any coach without the cattle he will struggle.
Burton is developing into a very good half. But like everything it will take time. I do agree however that we should have signed an experienced halfback and left him at five/eighth. Moses would have improved us a lot.

Trex like all edge forwards should have been able to play 80 minutes with ease. And he did. The problem was he wasn’t as effective. But he was a damn good player or us. Set up and scored plenty and was a great defender. Overpaid maybe but certainly not a dud.

I can't agree that Des wasn't one dimensional. He did have the cattle and had two shots at a title and failed on both.

He replaced Franky who was a leader in the team and we went backwards from there. Many fans and I strongly suspect many players were disappointed. T-Rex wasn't good enough to polish Franky's boots. He is the biggest rubbish waste of salary cap I have ever seen, closely followed by Woods.

Yes on the rare occasions when he got involved and didn't drop the ball, he often made an impact. Key losses for us were Finnicuanne, Taupau and Pritchard duds like T-Rex were part of the reason why we let those good forwards go. We had Hoppa at fullback, a good and skillful player, but way too slow. We had Jimmy Graham at halfback for a while, eventually replaced by the the invisible man. We had Lichaa at hooker, totally unsuited to passing the ball for 80 mins. Trash the team, and you get the results you deserve.

How does Kayin Ponga get away with spitting the dummy and declaring himself unavailable for SOO. Hardly a long term player. I remember Terry Lamb having to stand down from a club match with a much better reason.

Can't believe I'm going to say this but the team looked better under Potter's coaching. Something is seriously wrong with our team. Defence is non existent. Structure is non existent. I'm hurting like all of us.....

I bought a $150 four game family membership this year (in previous years I would spend $1000 on reserved seating in good spots). I have been to 2 games so far and don’t think I’ll be able to stomach another. Next year, I’ll stick to watching on tv and switch off at half time when they dish up this crap

+xIt's not like the Knights are one of the elite teams of the competition I am not even sure what went wrong there. It seemed like a pub side played reserve grade then backed up to play NRL. I hope that the players who stay at the club learn from that. If anyone in the side was playing for a contract extension, they can forget it. Where is the fight?

But Ciraldo will make some lame comment in the presser and next Tuesday proceed to pick the same inept side that was flogged today. We need a bigger cleanout than I thought.

The decision to play Rajab was hugely costly. Not only was the poor guy targeted but if the swapping of Alamoti and Avarillo was done to somehow assist Rajab look after Bradman Best , then that was way off . This then destroyed the combinations of Avarillo and Karaz ( who ,in attack, has come inside to send Avarillo away on many occasions) and Alamoti and JAC who have looked strong together.
Rajab experiment sadly went wrong to which the coach HAS TO TAKE 100% blame. Rajab may recover . On that showing Oloapu is ahead for the future as he has better one one defence at this stage . Flanagan would have been a better coaching choice today if you're after a win and not blooding for the future.
Ciraldo lost me today.

I don’t care what anyone says CC is a colossal failure esp on the money his on..Potter would had done a better job less than half the price . The team has gone backwards big time . Half the team over rated . Only decent signing is Mahoney over the last few years .. will not get better next ..

Ivan Cleary must be a good coach. We keep taking his super star assistants and he keeps winning without buying stars to replace player losses.

I am going to mostly believe tne comments from Gus and CC. They are saying inexperience and a lack of confidence was the issue. Too many young and inexperienced players.
Rajab and Allamotti together on the right was an experiment that definitely didn't work. CC claims we lost our way at 18-0 down, we didn't have the experience, leadership and resolve to fight our way back.
We need to give some of the young guys a spell in reserve grade just to help restore their confidence and fixing the defence has to be the priority.
CC said that the side has a lot of bad habits, they do the right stuff at training, but under pressure in games they keep repeating the same mistakes. I also believe that, but guys making the most mistakes need a spell in reserve grade.
Recuitment has to focus on experience, leadership and resolve,hard-working players that don't make mistakes and can handle pressure.

It's not the players making the same mistakes, it's the coach. He picks the same duds every week and expects a better result.

+xIvan Cleary must be a good coach. We keep taking his super star assistants and he keeps winning without buying stars to replace player losses. Teams move up and down the ladder slowly as a general rule. The hardest step up is from bottom 4 to top 8. The top 4 teams from the season before generally go ok in the following season. Finishing in the top 8 in any given season can be a fluke, 3 seasons in a row is no fluke. We have already tried sacking the coach 3-4 times recently for no results, that should tell you something. I also hate losing, and I am sure that the coach and players do. A young coach will make the odd mistake, especially when he is experimenting. We tried Rajab and it didn't work, that wasn't the only reason why we lost. Karl was out injured this week. The way the season is progressing I would not throw young Hayward into the NRL at his stage. If BBO gets back to full fitness and shows some form then try him. Keep Morrin and Edwards in the side even if we keep losing, the experience will improve them.

We have tried 4 players as Burton's halves partner, there is perhaps 1 more that we need to try. I have never thought that Perham was a good option at fullback While Gus is here, CC isn't going to be sacked as coach anytime soon. Pay and Potter also were not the problem, they also made some mistakes. Baz was more suited to being an assistant coach.

Anyway we need to beat the poms to lift my spirits.
For the Dogs this season I just want to see improvement, forget about top 8,
I will not be overly disappointed if we lose most weeks for the rest of the season, I just want to see effort and fight.

+xThe decision to play Rajab was hugely costly. Me too.
I have been saying fir a few years now. We need to sign an experienced coach and halfback. Ciro may turn this around over the next few years but that’s not what our club needs. We need people who can do it now.

New resources needed. As you say we have tried 4 players as Burton's halves partner. All without success. At some we may need to question Burton's suitability as a a half.

I think if we are genuinely trying to compete this year we should pick our most experienced players. If we are just in it to develop young talent keep doing what we are doing.
But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. We need and experienced coach and halfback.
