+x+x+x1st day back in training for the boys..... 40*+ degree heat today T Baz..... rip into them please I'd rather they did video sessions today. I see no benefit in putting players under unnecessary stress in this heat so far out from round 1. Half our problems are theory. Video sessions aren’t going to help much. The team needs to run the structures with the spine. Put the blueprint in place now. Get the spine talking preferably screaming at the rest of the team the whole session. Give young Flange the head call and get him used to taking charge.
You need to practice game time or as close as possible thousands of times to make the passes and lines run simply reflex.
Other than that wrestle, wrestle, wrestle! Hit the mats inside and practice every dirty trick in the book.
Run in attack wrestle in defence. Priority I dont disagree we need alot of work with ball in hand and practice, but when you listen to Cooper Cronk and others talk about the tactics they used in games, you get a clear understanding that we are light years behind the other teams. I would rather our team changed their way of thinking before they even crossed the white line. We need key players with footy brains to take this team forward.

And yes we need video sessions to watch what other teams will throw at us. But tactics need to be learnt on the run in training. We should have numerous options on each tackle depending on the opposition with smart plays targeting positional errors. We also need to have a overriding call from our better spine players.
I would love to be a fly on the wall at training today to see what’s being done.

Fwit Dessy & Pay over saturated many of these guys with bloody video sessions/GPS/I Pads/Grids etc.... let’s not forget that useless skills coach Pay used as well They all need to be kicked in the head & told this is what being a 1st grade player is all about, catching, passing, kicking, tackling, post contact hit ups etc..... that’s got to be done on the field First day back, New coaching team, new players etc. Will mainly be administrative and procedural things going forward. Then hard at it tomorrow

Run in attack wrestle in defence. Priority Rather than mindless fitness sessions 9-12 a side "murder ball" games are good, players get to work on decision making and skills under fatigue. I would not try to cook the squad first day back, so some skill drills, gym and video in the hottest part of the day is good. Yes indoor wrestling is another good option on a hot day. Players can also practice wrestling for a fast play the ball, doing that on mats inside and videoing the session might be useful. Show a bloopers reel at the end of the day. Training and improving the squad can also have variety and be fun. We do need to work in fitness, but ease into it. In summary, be smart, have patience and purpose.

Never waste a chance to get them (or yourself) out of your comfort zone.
Like today.
Because you can’t always plan for them, and if you could you’d always put them off till tomorrow.
RUN THEM HARD!

RUN THEM HARD! The best thing for a Dog’s fan to think about for today would be what would Billy Johnstone put them through? What would Steve Folkes (as either trainer, especially trainer, or coach) put them through? When we were the hardest c***’s on the planet. Think they’d put them through video? maybe with some air-conditioning and a nice ice-cream?

Decisions have to be made under stress. You can’t just say it’s too stressful, let’s watch a video.
Noooooooo, training’s TODAY and it’s hot. But it’s still today. Game day won’t wait for the perfect conditions. It’s still game day.

Game day won’t wait for the perfect conditions. It’s still game day. There is a difference between training and flogging. I'm all for flogging at the right time, but spend a couple of weeks working up to it. Fitness was below par last season, it needs work, but there is no instant fix, the club needs to manage things professionally. Why I suggested using a ball, is players focus on the ball and the game, they want to win, natural instincts take over and players push themselves. Yeah definitely step it up, we need to step it up. While fitness is an issue, the side showed some resilience, there is a lot of other stuff to improve. The fastest improvement is in doing everything 10-20% better, there are plenty of easy gains to be had in any area of the game we care to mention. No point in being super fit if we are clueless and poorly organised. We can also get fitter while working on other stuff. The game has moved beyond the 80s formula, teams need to be fit and mentally tough to win anything, but in the modern era that justs gets you 8-12 on the table. Higher needs, skill, organisation, execution and composure.

Changing plans on DAY ONE because some princess’s might get a little hot is not the way you start. It’s gonna be freezing down in Canberra in June and it could be 35 degs on GF Day and you can’t cancel them for video sessions. You just got to harden the f*** up and deal with it. How many here have to go to work and tough it out in the heat or cold, boss let you watch videos instead?

In fact, it's always been about football smarts but the 80's disguised it with some brute force which was endorsed by the rules of that time.

TB needs to address the whole team and coaching staff and wipe the slate clean. Whatever they thought they knew about footy they should forget about and start from scratch. Coz we need to.

To lift the intensity we certainly need to get fitter in order to sustain it for longer periods otherwise we need a very good bench rotation and halves that control the tempo of games. That's what the top teams do well.

Let's see what Baz comes up with.

Not sure why you think we were fit last season. Like the top teams do well. Our defence was pretty good. We didn't score many points but we defended the few points we did score. I had it down to fitness and a conservative gameplan. But it was clear they couldnt maintain intensity for long periods if time. I put that down to the obsession of the coaches to try to turn too many forwards into 80min players yet these players give you 10mins of good intensity footy and the other 70mins is a lethargic rabble - going through the motions. The top teams rotate their forwards and get maximum impact from them. Very few play 80mins

I would love to see what training entails during the pre season. I would love to know how much wrestling is involved these days.
I have just starting Brazilian Jui Jitsu. And the wrestling that is involved is easily the hardest physical activity I have ever done. I have trained in the weights gym, boxing, footy training, soccer, marathon, sprints etc. But wrestling is harder than all the rest. It just destroys every part of your body while running you into the ground in a matter of seconds. MMA fighters are truely the fittest people in the world. If anybody is game go and train at any BBJ academy to see what it’s like.
My point is that, the wrestling that the Storm have made a major focus on in their game may have achieved more than slowing down the play. I believe it’s made them the fittest team in the comp and is a must in every good footy club.
It’s why when Barrett talked about the new expanded wrestling area in the gym I was excited. It shows that he understands what the club needs to turn the corner. I just hope we have a tough prick of a wrestling coach that strangles the life out of the weak players. Harden the soft c**ts up
