+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xLabaschagne also out for a duck! 4/11 bloody soul destroying. Bilal's doozra is an illegal delivery. They have thrown away a fab start with some dumb cricket. SOS and Head should hang their heads. Has everyone left in disgust? Mitch survives the spinners but falls to the quick...this is a debacle!! I was worried this would happen. The opening stand was encouraging though. The Pakistani spin is high quality, but I've been saying this for years about few Aussie pitches being conducive to spin. Few spinners are selected in Shield teams that rely on pace on pace friendly wickets. Most of these pace bowlers aren't much good overseas. Peever and Sutherland didn't care about developing players for the Subcontinent, where most overseas cricket is played. Also, Australia has the highest runs scored per over in Test cricket played in Australia in the world. Only about 15 percent of Aussies see us play in those series. DC I am very disappointed in this display because Peever and Sutherland have been working on ways to improve our play in the sub cont. After our last India disaster steps were made to do something so this embarrassment would never happen again. Someone came up with the idea of making Indian like pitches at the Cricket Centre in Brisbane. First they shipped Indian soil here or where thinking of doing that.. perhaps the cost was too much so they went looking for our own soil that had similar qualities to the Indian one. Not sure exactly where they found it.. somewhere in the sticks. This soil then went into building practice pitches at the Cricket Centre. Our blokes have been using these decks before every sub continental tour since. Still they are lame ducks against the turning ball. My point is they need to play matches in the same conditions. They don't. IMO India is the best place to watch cricket. This was questioned by a former player at the time. Just forgotten who. He wanted to know why these pitches had not been installed at a ground so you can actually have a game situation. Some Shield venues need to be like this - not like Brisbane or the old Perth, where visiting teams are usually played early in the series and struggle with the bounce. Then they are too far behind behind in the series to catch up. This makes Aussie believe we are far better than we are, because most Aussies don't see us play overseas.

I like the big crowds in India. When the pitches are spinning they will have spinners bowling from each end. One sees a lot of cricket played in a short time as spinners get through overs quickly. One sees a lot of balls played. I do like the Indian atmosphere. They are cricket mad. But spinathons are not my cup of tea. I much prefer a quick hurling down thunderbolts and having the batsmen ducking and weaving.. I prefer a bloke putting everthing on the line to protect his wicket and build an innings with patience and concentration. Paks have not enforced the follow on. Who is surprised? I am.

+x+xDid anyone not see that collapse coming? Usman and Finch had a bit of luck, but the latter in particular looked good. None of the others established themselves, but I was worried about a collapse. You always need a bit of luck on these types of surfaces. Both batted well and showed the gritty temperament required for the conditions. Most of the rest were really bad dismissals. Maxwell scored 104 off 185 was in Ranchi coming in with Australia 4/140. It was a perfect innings of getting yourself in and cashing in on the start. I would have considered even bringing in a George Bailey/ Cameron White type player who are wiser heads even if they didnt make much of test cricket. But having a side where your #4 averages 27 in tests and 32 in first class and following that up with two debutants who both havent been prolific with the bat was always going to go like this.

The SCG is sometimes prepared to take big turn on the third day of a Shield game. Recall in a game last year such a deck.. Agar and SOK both took 5fors. What about making one or two of these dreadful slow drop in state tracks spinning decks? CA needs to do something... and fast.

Seeing George bat a lot at Bellerive he isn't good enough for Test cricket in Australia, but I know he has had limited overs success on the Subcontinent.

I posted the same point about George Bailey. Yes Bear could do something similar. George would be my choice as he is a superior player of spin to White. The point you are making is they would bring a calm head to a dire situation. SOS Marsh should have done just that when Finch departed.. but he had a massive brain fade.

Lyon doesn't seem to be generating as much spin and kick off the pitch that Shah and Bilal were - yet.

George has had good Shield figures over the past few seasons. When he was sacked from the Test side he was told by CA to go back to domestic red ball cricket and score masses of runs. Which he has done.

+xLyon doesn't seem to be generating as much spin and kick off the pitch that Shah and Bilal were - yet. I would have Labuchagne on sooner rather than later. He was by far our most dangerous spinner. I can see him doing some damage on this crumbling deck. It is all too late tho. This game is lost already.

+xwell I went to bed at the right time what a disaster! If you gave Darwin a shield team they could have a sub continent style pitch You probably did. Before you went you identified flaws in Usman and Finch when they were batting well compared to the rest of the team! They were easily our best batters too. You would have despaired seeing the rest!

Sorry to say it fellars but our blokes choked. They looked at the scoreboard and choked. Like Greg Norman did when in a position to win a major.

if you draw the first match overseas you have a very good chance of winning the series
We only needed to hold our nerve for a few hours longer
what the heck happened?

Shaun Marsh had a brain fade then the rest choked.. that is what happened. We needed Marsh as the senior player to lead by example once Finch departed. Timmy erred by not moving up the order to protect the two debutants.
