Doolan looks in total control. Blues need an enforcer in its attack.. someone to ruffle some feathers. This mob is an embarrassment.

Lyon and O'Keefe have now bowled 50 overs between them for zero wickets.

Baffled why Sangha has not bowled as yet.  He was the most effective spinner in the last match..

What you make of Skull saying chuck him into the test team this year in the middle order?

Skull reckons he is the only batsman with the technique to score runs everywhere (excluding Smith I would assume).

He reckons chuck him in there now as a youngster, give him years, then the team will get Ricky-Ponting-like output from him later.

How does Abbott with @37 av and 65 s/r warrant being picked. Please answer me that selectors.

Not sure someone who had the sum total of 85 Test runs from 34 innings is qualified to comment on the merits of a batsman tho... Sangha is no doubt a talented cricketer..but green and needs work on various aspects. They threw Ponting to the lions as a 20 year old even tho he also was not the finished product. Personally I dont think Sangha is ready. But I would certainly back him if he was a shock selection. I would be far more confident if Steve Waugh or even Ponting had come out with this comment and not Skull.

A bowler has to examine a batsman's technique to see the weaknesses in it to exploit, though.

I would listen to Glenn McGrath's analysis of a batsman's technique before Simon O'Donnells. :P

Punter is very astute. I rate him incredibly highly. And Tom Moody also. I think their opinions are very weighty. I believe they're the two best cricketing minds in Australia, if not globally. Steve Waugh - much less so.

Not sure you could find a more accommodating deck on which to draw a match than this SCG one.

Only the two teen century makers, Alex Doolan  and Copeland are in the running for my Team Of the Round.

Valid point. So what  is your take on whether Sangha should be chucked into the fray.

From what I know - he does seem to be the future of Australian Cricket.

But if they do it - they should not discard him after a series if he scores low. It actually has to be - hey kid, you're the future, don't worry if you fail and fail, you have years of an assured spot if you keep working hard and your technique looks sound, don't worry about making huge runs instantly. Or would you prefer to stay in domestic longer?

MD Crowe reckons he was picked too soon. But Punter and Tendulkar et al benefited in the long term from being picked so young. I am not averse to putting him in there myself. But he should not be made into an excuse, and he should not be under any more pressure than simply what the bowler throws at him.

Kallis was picked young and sucked for 20 or 30 tests. So did Steve Waugh. There is a payoff even if he sucks at the start. Aus do not have to play SA for a long time. Which just leaves Jimmy and English swing in 2019 as the biggest hurdle for the kid. And Kohli sucked first up in England - look at him now.

Put simply, if he wants to play - I'd play him. But he has to want to.

I agree.
Even the The Don was sacked in his early days from memory. I do not condone picking a promising player and then discarding him. Tho it did Bradman no harm.. but he was a genius.

I am still not sold on Kohli in foreign climes. Yes he sucked on his first England tour. But thrived on our  roads in 2015. Last England trip the Poms were having a heat wave and the decks were very batting friendly. If CA wanted to get serious they will prepare traditional Aussie decks with pace and bounce. Kohli does not like those.

The Don scored a 50 and a ton in his 2nd test.

In his 4th test he scored a 2nd ton.

His third ton was in his 5th test.

I don't understand?

You mean he played 1 test, dropped and then brought back later in the series for his second test?

If so, not quite what I was referring too :P

Damien Martyn - however... how many years of HUGE output did Australia lose from him in the mid to late 90's at his peak and prime? (Heck possibly Hayden as well?) Not to mention the Huss's ridiculously short career...

Lyon with three quick ones including Test keeper Paine.

There will be extra time added should it be needed. but he overs are running out too fast for a Blues victory.

Lyons wickets were too late to force a victory. Pretty much the story of his career. Webster was the difference between a draw and victory for the Blues. So he deserves special mention.

Wonders shall never cease.  Blues select Ashes-winning bowling quartet for Round 4 Shield match against the Bulls. So pleased the national selectors are finally listening to reason. Only downside is in form Trent Copeland will miss the cut. Baffingly Larkin and Henriques have still not been axed.

NSW Blues squad: Peter Nevill (c), Trent Copeland, Pat Cummins, Jack Edwards, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Nick Larkin, Nathan Lyon, Stephen O'Keefe, Kurtis Patterson, Jason Sangha, Mitchell Starc .

Finally sensible policy. Incumbent Test and fringe batsmen have the chance to make a statement for inclusion in the First Test squad when they take part in tomorrow's Shield round. Test quartet Hazlewood, Cummins, Lyon and Starc will turn out for the Blues tomorrow. while other hopefuls will turn out for their states. For our bowling cartel it is vital red ball preparation while for the batsmen it will be in a bat off for positions in our Test top six and reserves. This means only form red ball players will be chosen. Fringe players as I see them are Doolan, Cooper, Harris, Handscomb (bat), Tremain, Bird, Sayers,  Jhye Richardson (bowlers). Youngsters Josh Philippe, Jason Sangha and Sam Heazlett are all coming off debut FC centuries. One of these three could queeze into the squad for experience.  Hats off JL, Hohns and Chappell..

Young Henry Hunt scored 98 in a FL game this week. He has amassed 366 runs from four visits to the middle this season.

Bowlers, Neser, Sayers and Copeland have more runs this season than Henriques. In a disappointing career he has never been able to better  low @30s FC average. He is hanging by the proverbial thread.
