Football Federation Australia (FFA) chairman Steven Lowy AM has today praised the outstanding contribution to football of three outgoing FFA Board directors.

Joseph Healy advised of his resignation from the Board to take effect at the conclusion of this year’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), and the terms of the other Appointed Directors, Simon Hepworth and Chris Nikou, expired on 16 October 2018.
.
blah blah blah
.
.

As a result of today’s announcement, the FFA Board comprises five directors until the AGM, at which four vacancies for Elected Directors will be available to be filled, and at the conclusion of which there will be three vacancies for Appointed Directors available to be filled.

A date for the 2018 Annual General Meeting will be announced in due course.

First chairwoman, Foster on board for potential new FFA hierarchy

DOMINIC BOSSI OCTOBER 25, 2018Australian football could have its first chairwoman with two women nominated to replace Steven Lowy, alongside a former Soccer Australia boss and media personality Craig Foster.

Australian football could go back to the future with former Soccer Australia chairman Remo Nogarotto understood to have been nominated to be Football Federation Australia's next chairman.

He will challenge former Capital Football chair Heather Reid, former Australian Grand Prix boss Judith Griggs and SBS pundit and former Socceroo Foster in a bid to replace Steven Lowy as chairman of the FFA.

The quartet are among the names submitted before the close of deadline for the nominations for the FFA board, which must replace four outgoing members including the chair to be vacated by Lowy.

Fairfax Media understands former Capital Football chair Reid was nominated, alongside Griggs, who oversaw the Congress Review Working Group and was the first chief executive of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation.

The FFA’s membership will vote for its new board and chairman at its annual general meeting in early November.Nogarotto has been touted for a possible return to Australian football administration as chairman - a position he previously held before stepping down in 2003 when he was replaced by Frank Lowy.Nogarotto was a former chairman of NSL clubs Marconi, Northern Spirit as well as a director of Newcastle Jets. After football, he became a senior advisor to the NSW Liberal Party and managing director of advisory firm Crosby Textor.

Reid has been a pioneer in women's football for more than 30 years and was the first female to be appointed as the head of a state football federation when she became chair of Capital Football.

Griggs is a lawyer and business executive who first made a name for in sports administration through motor sports, working with Formula One for five years in the early 1990s before being named Australian business woman of the year in 1996. More recently, Griggs oversaw the Congress Review Working Group that broke the bitter impasse of the FFA crisis that previously ground Australian football governance to a halt.
It remains to be seen whether Craig Foster's nomination is for a position on the board or for the role of chairman.
It remains to be seen whether Craig Foster's nomination is for a position on the board or for the role of chairman.
There remained a chance on Thursday that Foster’s voice could become all the more influential throughout Australian football, with the former Socceroo and media personality understood to have been among up to a dozen nominees put forward for the vacant board positions.Fairfax Media understands there was a significant move from stakeholders led by the players' union, the PFA, to have Foster nominated for the FFA board.

It remains to be seen, however, whether Foster's nomination is for a position on the board or for the role of chairman. He will likely have to forego several other employment commitments if he was to pursue a position on the organisation’s board.Due to a potential conflict of interest, it is highly likely Foster would have to step down from his role as technical director with A-League expansion hopeful Southern Expansion. Foster’s employment with SBS as a pundit and commentator would also be cast into doubt in the event he was elected to the FFA board.

FFA Board

Ray Gatt (with John Stensholt) and Dominic Bossi had a mix of the names apparently nominated for the FFA Board by the 5pm AEDT deadline yesterday.

The Australian reports that a list of eight includes “high-powered business people” (we count two), seven of whom are named as:

  • PwC Managing Partner, Joseph Carrozzi (NSW)
  • former CEO of Capital Football, Heather Reid (ACT)
  • Managing Director of Crosby Textor, Remo Nogarotto (NSW/Italy)
  • Canberra lawyer and current Board member, Danny Moulis (ACT)
  • Melbourne lawyer and current Board member, and former Melbourne Victory Board member, Chris Nikou (Victoria)
  • former F1 executive, Judith Griggs, most recently chair of the Congress Review Working Group (England), and
  • football analyst, commentator, coach and former Chairman and CEO of the PFA, Craig Foster (NSW).

Gatt and Stensholt write that Griggs’ inclusion is “controversial”, and that Nogarotto has ruled himself out as Chairman. They do not name the apparent eighth candidate but state that former Senator Stephen Conroy is "believed to be out of the running".

They don’t mention that both Carozzi and Reid, along with Nikou, were on the Board of the 2015 Asian Cup.

Bossi also named Griggs, Reid, Nogarotto and Foster, with the lead that FFA could have its first “chairwoman” (the more politically correct term is Chairman or, if you must, chairperson) with either Griggs or Reid possibilities, along with Nogarotto and Foster. Bossi notes that Foster would need to excise himself from Southern Expansion and possibly also SBS-TV. It is unclear why the latter, as SBS is not a rights player locally and Board members are entitled to have day jobs.

He doesn’t mention that Nogarotto would also need to excise himself from the South-West Sydney bid, which he currently chairs. In our view, this is easily dealt with in both Foster's and Nogarotto's cases.

News Corp, on the other hand, wrote more speculatively, naming almost all the same people. They tip Chris Nikou as the new Chairman – which would be a good outcome for the Lowy legacy. FFA says they will announce the nominees on Sunday once the Nominations Committee has met.

Pictured are (starting top left in a clockwise direction): Carrozzi, Reid, Foster, Nogarotto, Moulis, Griggs, Nikou and the mystery eighth person.

Professional Footballers Australia (the PFA) confirms it supports the nomination of former international footballer Craig Foster and female football pioneer Heather Reid AM for election to the board of Football Federation Australia (FFA) at its Annual General Meeting, scheduled for 19 November 2018.

The elections will be the first held under the reformed FFA Constitution which recognises the PFA as a formal stakeholder within the sport’s governance.

PFA President Alex Wilkinson was proud of the PFA’s newfound capacity to contribute to building the game’s governance capabilities.

“The Executive met last week and we unanimously resolved to put Craig and Heather forward for nomination. The underpinning purpose of the entire reform process was to drive diversity of experience and diversity of opinion, so the voice of genuine football people was critical.

“In the case of Heather and Craig, there is a body of work spanning their entire lives that demonstrates absolute commitment to the game. We are very thankful that they both accepted the invitation to stand for election.

“Craig and Heather have given their life to the cause of football. We think this not only aligns with the commitment that the players make; but can be appreciated by everyone who has fallen in love with football.”

Former Socceroo and PFA Chairman Craig Foster felt privileged to be called upon by the players to stand for the FFA Board.

“It’s humbling to be asked to put my hand up at such an important time for the sport in this country.

“The opportunity for football to flourish and for it to play a role in shaping Australian society has never been greater. There is a unique opportunity for a new leadership team to align and work collaboratively with all those who love the game and to shape the sport in their image.”

Heather Reid, who was awarded an Order of Australia for her commitment to football and to gender equity in sport, was equally humbled at the invitation to serve.

“After four decades of involvement in the world game, I would be honoured to seek election to the FFA board. As I have done for decades, I would continue to provide a meaningful contribution across all levels of football: local community to state, national and international level, to ensure positive outcomes and harness the opportunity for all players of the beautiful game.”

The PFA looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively with all of the game’s stakeholders to elect a board that represents the best interests of the game as a whole.

The nominations of Reid and Foster will now be considered by the FFA Nominations Committee for approval prior to being presented to the members of FFA for potential election.

Foster at least would have the games best interest at heart, and it would be great to see him actually getting involved rather than shooting from the hip from the commentary box.

As long as he removes himself from the decision making process around the expansion bids.

The fact is that there will be almost no 'football people' that wont have some skin in the game somewhere (aka conflict of interest). By definition if they are in the game somewhere they are going to have 'interests' of some sort. The key is to ensure the conflicts are both known and managed.

The other option is to put 'independent' lawyers, accountants and business people on the board... oh wait!

Hot on the heels of a media release from the PFA confirming that they nominated Craig Foster and Heather Reid for the FFA Board, Foster has issued his own statement outlining his positioning for a Board position with his eyes firmly focussed on "so many amazing contributors" to the sport with knowledge and experience.

“It is a privilege to have been asked to serve the game. It is time to believe in our game and the great people we have within football,” Foster said.

“All who love the game have a right to be a part of the journey to which so many have contributed – fans, players, volunteers, referees, coaches and administrators. No one should be left behind, or left out. In particular, our fans are crying out to be given a voice and to participate in the game they love."

Foster, 49, who is a former Chairman and CEO of the PFA has been a vocal and passionate face of the game with SBS-TV for more than 14 years.

He said that he also wanted to have "a conversation around nation building" by sharing the dream of Johnny Warren - to not just play in World Cup tournaments, but win them, for men and women.

"That’s a dream I want the football community and all of Australia to share and to be inspired by.

“The purpose of the FFA Board is to serve as custodians of the game, as enablers of the community’s passion and to align everyone’s energy to the good of the game."

Foster said that he has undertaken to resign from his role with Southern Expansion if elected, and ensure that none of his multiple roles within football interferes with his duties as a FFA director.

As well as his role with SBS television, Foster is a member of the Australian Multicultural Council and an ambassador for John Moriarty Football and Football United, social programs using football to promote education and health outcomes among children in remote and refugee communities.

Late on Friday afternoon, The Australian reported that there are 15 candidates who have been nominated for the Board, including the man previously mooted to be the Chairman, former Senator Stephen Conroy, who is now CEO of 'Responsible Wagering Australia', an organisation funded by the gambling industry.

In the morning's press (referenced here), eight people were believed to have nominated with seven of them named.

One other nominee named by The Australian is the Chief Financial Officer of Lachlan Murdoch's private investment company, Illyria, Linda Norquay who is said to be a "mad fan of Sydney FC".

As well as Foster and Reid, Conroy and Norquay join Joseph Carrozzi, Judith Griggs, Danny Moulis, Chris Nikou and Remo Nogarotto as nominees with a further six yet to be revealed, if The Australian's report of Friday afternoon is accurate.

The other option is to put 'independent' lawyers, accountants and business people on the board... oh wait!

Exactly. We need Football people in but they are going to inevitably have some form of bias. Foster will be required to recuse himself from expansion selection in this round and that works for me. His ideas and vision for the much longer term, Football authentic, view of the game beyond this round of expansion is what is far more important.

That AFL stooge however should be told he is not welcome.
