Glad that Foster has withdrawn. Still unsure about Nogarotto. His time with Soccer Australia has left a lasting (negative) impression. All the reporting about “voting blocks” being formed is starting to make me uncomfortable.

All the reporting about “voting blocks” being formed is starting to make me uncomfortable. The split up of voting numbers in the CRWG recommendation was based on voting blocks so it is no surprise that the stakeholders are trying to use their voting power to advantage. Its the old "self interest v corporate benefit" issue again and self interest is winning because FIFA in its lack of knowledge or wisdom or both left out dealing with the perennial problem of distrust and disrespect that drives football relationships here first before moving on to the lesser task of membership of the congress.

“All the reporting about “voting blocks” being formed is starting to make me uncomfortable.” .... I’m not sure what you expected?
The HAL clubs are forced to vote in a block. Speaking to BRFC this week on this topic they get to cast their votes within the HAL/AAPFC group but their individual votes get aggregated with every other clubs to decide the HAL clubs preference and hence winner of their block vote.
So that’s one block.
Then the stakeholders (States, PFA, HAL) will be discussing who and what they want, that’s actually a healthy thing providing the discussions are done properly, and if they come to an agreement they will presumably form another voting block.
Again, that’s pretty normal. That’s how these things work.
In future, if FIFA get their way, more votes will be added to congress which will dilute these blocks but we might have to wait a few more years for that to become a reality but even then the horse trading and blocks will come and go.

I’m not sure it really matters who we “go for now”.
Under Lowy, Lowy ran the game with minimal input from anyone else. So it didn’t matter.
Under the new system the Board will execute the will of the stakeholders so who is on the Board is only as important as who is driving the stakeholders
Then you get into the role of the standing committees and who will sit there? which will be equally as important as the Board positions (has there been any discussion on this, anywhere?)
And of course an independent HAL and AAFC led second division, and will the NPL clubs seek independence?
The Board is important but it’s not as important as if used to be.
Personally I wish FIFA had normalised us and administered the whole thing for 9-12 months while we made a shift away from a total dictatorship

To be honest looks very messy this voting system and alot of deals happening. So we could have the possibility of Nikou and Moulis on board along with the other existing two FFA board members and Gallop. That is honestly pathetic if that happens all under old regime. You think this would have been thought out better.I'm not liking the look of the two Melbourne clubs involvement to.

Heather Reid will be there, but she was a strong supporter of Lowy anyway, and her focus will be the womens game (which is not an issue as far as that goes, but it adds to the feeling that not very much is going to change in a hurry).

@ aok
It’s not the voting blocks that are the problem, that’s exactly what should happen. In theory they’re all having discussions with each other and there’s a bit of give and take going on and a Board gets assembled able to execute on a plan.
In reality it’s questionable what conversations are taking place and what everyone’s framework for discussions is in light of a lack of vision for the game and no “plan” other than Gallops PR fluff.
They could be really good conversations and we get a good board but equally they could be the shitest conversations known to man and football is screwed again.
Most likely it’ll be somewhere between those two extremes and will impact the game in different ways and differently by specific area, probably something like:
HAL owners will get what they want
Expansion candidates won’t, it’s likely the model will change on them and they’ll have to rebid. This may not be a bad thing in the better late and right than sooner and wrong
AAFC will likely get what they need for a Div2
Socceroos will likely face cut backs.
The States will largely be unaffected revenue wise. Most likely they’ll cut a deal with HAL clubs.
The ffa will likely face a massive overhaul with major cost savings resulting.
Pro/Rel is not even on anyone’s agenda so we can park that. It’ll be the next Board that deals with that.
So out of all this I’m confident the HAL will be fine, I recon AAFC will thrive as well and these two will strengthen our game.
I’m worried about the States. There’s a serious lack of talent in there and we could have serious issues as HAL/NPL clubs peel away and this area could weaken our game.
I’m not sure what it will mean for the National sides but they’ll have to do more with less.
And the individuals on the Board, they’re important but not that important anymore. The decisions are being made elsewhere now

This is a new thought away from the flow of the thread, but why do people say that the Chairman needs to have business conections or acumen as well as (or even instead of) being a football person.
Don't you hire a CEO for business acumen?
Gallop's gotta earn his $1.2m per year somehow, surely.
It should be football people setting the agenda, and business professionals getting it done.

The linked article by the AICD will give you a brief summary of the role of the Board with a paragraph or so on their role in a Not for Profit organisation. The Chairman's role is to facilitate the Board in fulfilling its responsibility and I can't see a Chairman being able to do that without a thorough knowledge of and experience in the proper operation of a business. http://aicd.companydirectors.com.au/resources/not-for-profit-resources/nfp-resources/nfp-governance/role-of-the-nfp-boardWith regard to your comment that football people should set the agenda and business people should get it done the revised Constitution sets up Standing Committees where the football people will be able to "assist and advise" the Board with their specialist knowledge so the Board can make better informed decisions.

@ paladiscious
It will be football people setting the agenda - Congress sets the agenda not the Board and there’s several new committees stuffed with football people to work in specialised areas.
The Boards job, and what it’s elected to do, is to represent shareholders, or in our case stakeholders from congress.
The FFAs board mandate will be very specific and a big part of it will be to establish corporate governance/management/oversight over the organisation.
Could Foster have done that? Possibly but the only thing that’s certain is he couldn’t get support. He talked a good game but it was too popularist imo and he would have been in conflict with his role and responsibilities once elected.
He talked about his vision - being on the Board is not about fosters vision, he would have been elected to deliver on someone else’s vision and what he was basically saying was “f’ck you, Ive got my own direction planned out”.
He talked about no prior deals - that all sounds fine but deals have to be done otherwise a new Board argues for months before it can go anywhere. If it can ever go anywhere.
And then you have his southern involvement - there is no way Southern can get selected with foster on the Board without accusations of bias. If the backers are serious they would probably have been very vocal opposing him.
We need to find away to have people like foster involved but the Board isn’t the appropriate place.

I was replying to your point that no "football people" have nominated. If you want to move the goalposts and make it about his "now how", which I assume is his knowledge and business accumen, then sure I would compare Foster and Remo - and Remo would win. Remo was a soccer Australia chief, but also selected by Frank Lowy to work on the NSL task force - which was part of the process that ended in the formation of the professional league. He has held numerous directorships in business and also lectures in universities in Europe to business students in sports administration. He is a football person and he is a businessman. Many of the things he spoke of at the AAFC meeting were similar to that which Foster was saying, so for Foster to be celebrated as the "only" person doing so is at best ignorant and at worst dishonest. I'm not knocking Foss at all, as he has skills in media and also from heading the PFA. I'd love both on the board.

The millennial is reporting the same https://www.theage.com.au/sport/soccer/five-peel-away-from-the-pack-as-ffa-board-election-nears-20181118-p50gso.htmlThere are 10 contenders left in the running after Craig Foster's withdrawal from the race on Friday night. Various factions are taking different views of the situation but the one thing they all agree on is that five have pulled away from the rest of the pack.
They are former Soccer Australia chairman Remo Nogarotto, PricewaterhouseCoopers partner Joseph Carrozzi, women's football pioneer Heather Reid, ex-Labor senator Stephen Conroy and Lowy-era director Chris Nikou.

There’s a rather rabid approach on-line to these Board “elections”, I say “elections” because although they are democratic via vote they are more like appointments in nature, hence all the horse trading.
Even Ray Gatt is getting in on the act, instead of providing in-depth and impartial analysis he’s turning into a cheerleader and doing nothing but bemoaning football politics.
The old Board had two fundamental problems: one man (Lowy) selected who sat on the Board and Board members were disconnected from the football community.
The problem on who gets in there and how has been resolved; unfortunately when a preferred candidate doesn’t get support everyone blames the system (and not the candidates ability to garner enough support) - what would people propose as yet another alternative?
Secondly is this notion that the Board needs “football people” (which I’m not unsympathetic to) but the problem with the last Board was not a lack of football people but a total and utter disconnect from the football community. The Board needs Board people and yes it would be nice if they were football people too, but that’s a nice to have not a must-have.
That old Board disconnect is largely addressed by how people are now appointed. If people don’t like who/how people are appointed then change required is at Congress level - how are State Chaurmen elected and how do they determine who to nominate and which way to vote? Has anyone questioned that - or how the new women’s council operates or the PFA? (I think the HAL clubs operations are known and very one dimensional).
Fans don’t have a voice yet. There’s some hope the new FSA can provide that but as yet they don’t have a constitution, an elected Board or a democratic method of understanding and representing supporters views. And how many other supporters groups have a proper structure such that they can aggregate and represent their members views?
So to say “the fans have spoken” is wrong, they don’t have a voice yet (and remember some surveys showed decent support for Lowy and the FFA right up to the end) and if fans want a voice they need to get involved with the FSA and/or form their own group. But the moment that’s done expect the same scrutiny as everyone else.
By the end of today I expect to be satisfied that Lowy has gone but underwhelmed by who’s replaced him. I can live with that, for now, because this is the start of change not the end of it.

Well put. I do find it funny that these common-sense statements are being rolled out now when even a sniff of that level of insight had you bullied off this forum only days ago.
So the A League Clubs are pushing to get another AFL person in there. (Their spokesman was an AFL lawyer and their main supporter the PFA was headed by an AFL type in their major bust-up with the FFA). Until you "fans" of the A League Clubs have a say in what those Clubs do - then they are not Clubs. You are just their customers. Stop kidding yourselves.
I personally would support Rendell just on form and achievements in gymnastics. Possibly a better CEO than Board member, but he might need a change of pace.

To show how important this election is I have quoted the part of the Constitution that details the extent of the powers that the Directors have. 16 Powers and duties of Directors - 16.1 Directors to manage Company
- The Directors are to manage FFA’s business and may exercise to the exclusion of FFA in general meeting all the powers of FFA (including those under the FFA Statutes) which are not required, by the Corporations Act or by this Constitution, to be exercised by FFA in general meeting.
