+x+xI think 3-145 is exceptional on the pitch as it is playing right now. I did not see the first session but I think the moisture in the pitch early kept it from misbehaving as much as it is now. If Australia make it to 300 it is probably a match winning position unless either or both of India's star batsmen get a big score. Fortunately today is the only day of the test forecast to be very hot and there could even be some rain around from tomorrow because this pitch is a disaster and sustained heat would turn it into a widely cracked minefield. How many years did the WACA have cracking pitches. I do not know of any states on the Eastern seaboard that have them. AO or Bellerive have never cracked to my knowledge. So why do WA pitches crack. Is it due to the soil being clay based? Heat and wind are factors also... Things crack when they're dry...

Handscomb out. I feel batting first and India not bowling well initially has given us a bonus 80-100 runs.

Certainly, Harris in particular played very well and Finch did well to get to 50. However there is no doubt the wicket has changed over the day quite a lot and India have bowled better as well. India are going to have to start against this pitch which is a disgrace. I have no problem with a pitch cracking on days 4 and 5 particularly if it was been a hot test match. However when a pitch cracks up on day 1 there is something very wrong.

That's really poor batting by Handscomb. Second test in a row he's been out to a lazy cut shot. Batting deep in his crease is supposed to help his cut shots but he's been out twice.
Also, holy crap that was a great catch by Kohli.
India have bowled substantially better in that second session, but the pitch is also starting to play some tricks.

Batting deep in his crease doesn’t account for a lack of ability, Lastbroadcast.

I don’t think I’ve ever watched so much cricket where Australia has lost so much!

All of the Australian batsmen are playing cut type shots, not really true cuts, to short ball just outside off. The cut shot should be played to ball wide of off stump with free arms, not arms cramped against the body. The balls need to be either let through to the keeper or played defensively.

Head castigating for playing loosely at a ball shortish outside off. That is a ball that just should go through to the keeper and a little closer the defensive shot he practised afterwards.

Travis Head is doing it as well - poking at short balls on a good line with an angled bat. It's like slip catching practice.

Bumrah's spell is going to be key to the rest of the day.

DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE. A lot of the trouble is young players are now being trained by the requirements of the fake cricket shorter forms of the games to look to score off every ball, every type of ball. Losing a wicket matters less so a risky shot has less penalty and greater reward than in test cricket. It is a hard mindset to change, the instinct to play at wide balls is hard to overcome.

I've been very impressed with Bumrah in this series so far. He bowls very quick, full, and on the off stump most of the time. He makes the batsman play. Excellent find for India.

Pant is a terrible keeper - Vihari's second wicket goes begging...

Marsh somehow manages to edge a straight fairly short ball from Vihari but Pant drops him. It was a poor ball, bad shot and terrible wicket keeping.

We have already lost a couple to this. Discipline is needed if we are to get 350 from here. Is Hick Australia's batting coach?

I think he is, or was.
There is talk of him being replaced by a former Aussie great, like Ponting.

So now Marsh has had a life he has to make India pay.
Head just keeps on ticking the boxes.

CUT, CUT, CUT, CUT, CUT, CUTTING OUR THROAT. Harris got a brute of a ball but how many of the rest have got out cutting to close to their body. Vihari gifted a second wicket Now Paine has to play against the new ball.

I read the Aussies have been working on running between the wickets. It has worked!
Good to see Head make 50 again.
