Football: Auckland A-League side a must — Wellington Phoenix boss Rob Morrison 24 Feb, 2019 5:00am 2 minutes to read Rob Morrison. Photo / Warren Buckland Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison says the time is ripe for an Auckland A-League team — and other owners from across the competition would back a proposal from the Queen City. There are some residual scars from the failed ventures with the Football Kingz (1999-2004) and the New Zealand Knights (2005-2006), but a lot has changed in that time. Despite his own struggles in fighting for the viability of the Phoenix over the past few years, Morrison has no doubt that a second New Zealand franchise could work — and is needed. "It's a simple question," Morrison told the Herald on Sunday. "How long do we want to run around doing what we are doing, or do we want to grow? At some stage, with the biggest population base, football players ... people here might be interested in taking it to a bigger level. "Auckland is the biggest population base without a franchise. Yes, the experiment in the past failed, but that is not necessarily indicative of potential success in the future." The key is money, as it won't be a cheap exercise. A new licence could cost about A$10 million. "It would need someone who is prepared to get in, roll up their sleeves and back it," said Morrison. "They are big budgets and it needs serious backing." A franchise built on the base established by Auckland City FC is the most viable option. Auckland City have made no secret of their long standing A-League ambitions, and continue to assess potential partners. "We are always on the lookout," said chairman Ivan Vuksich. "We have got some feelers out in Auckland, as well as Asia. We will get our bait in the water, have a look around for the right people."

How about New Zealand pays for the league instead, they give each Aussie team $3.3 million per year and the Aussie clubs give them back $300k each, and the Kiwis can add as many teams as they like?

not b4 canberra. but having nix without auckland is a massive waste. if wellington folds before that happens it should be considered an epic failure of the league. the lethargy and failure to grow is killing the league.

Yeh great idea, another New Zealand club, playing out of another oversized stadium, offering us nothing more appealing to the A-league than a Canberra club could. Looks like a winner!

Yeah lets bring in an NZ club again in a city where they've failed previously, to try and bolster a NZ club that's been failing most of its life. Great thinking.

A part of me thinks this is trolling and that not even the FFA and current club owners could be so stupid, so ‘metrics’ driven and so anti-Australian as to do such a thing. A part of me thinks that not even the metrics driven, anti-football, morons at the FFA would so obviously place another nail in the coffin of Australian football, and distance itself from the development and growth of football in this country, Australia. A part of me thinks the FFA knows what the ‘A’ stands for. A part of me thinks that the current A-League owners do more than speak with accountants and lawyers and management consultants and tv executives, and understand that there remains some deep connections with football in places like Canberra, Cooma, Batemans Bay, Goulburn and Wagga Wagga. A part of me thinks the current A-League owners would like to see future Zelics, Valeris and Rogics play in our national competition and have a pathway to the top. But sadly, there is also a part of me that is chilled to the bone when I read articles such as this one, because in the dark recesses of my mind I know the ‘metrics’ driven morons at the FFA and the current club owners might just do something like this!

He has got to be trolling though a NZ based derby could spark more support for the HAL in NZ
these Kangaroos can play football - Ange P. (Intercontinental WC Play-offs 2017)

Someone saying "got to" outside the FFA Board - sure bet then. Got to have P&R... Got to get rid of VAR... Got to be an Aukland team... Good one. On the realities of it, it would make twice the number of overseas trips for every other team against the advantage to the Nix of having a couple of local derbies. Asia does not recognise NZ as an Asian confederation, so increasing NZ teams in the comp harms our Asian dynamic. NZ would gain considerably by having twice the local development options and increased competition - why the fk would we want that for Australian football? We can play friendlies against NZ if we want to help them - not train the buggers so they beat us. With doubt about the future of the Nix, anyone saying there has got to be another NZ team is thinking wishfully outside the box - nothing more than that. Nix in/Nix out - I have no problem if Nix stay in. They are part of the landscape now - but building another bloody factory in our pristine football environment; I think not.
When I wear their colours, I am the club.

No thanks, no more kiwis teams - could reconsider if New Zealand left Oceania and joined AFC, or NZ federated with Australia but even then not convinced of the metrics, particularly after Auckland's initial failure.

Or, my personal favourite, if Australia de-federated. I'd love to see the ACT as an independent, land locked sovereign state, reliant upon its own resources and generating its own production. Like Australia's Switzerland, except nobody sending money to it.

@bohemia, nobody ‘sends money’ to the ACT. We have our own local government and raise our own local revenue through rates etc. As for the Federal politicians, well, the rest of you send them to us and we unfortunately are tainted by them. But all of you in the rest of the country need to take responsibility for your own dumb selections. And you should pay for your Federal politicians and services. And another mythbuster, the ACT economy is no longer reliant on the Federal public service.

@bohemia. Not really. Measuring these things is as much art as science. Anyway, once upon a time, the Federal public service was estimated to account for 50% of the ACT’s economy. Now it’s around 25%. So maybe it is ‘reliant’ but then again you’d be surprised how many federal employees contribute to economies around the country, including in the over-populated, infrastructure poor Sydney and Melbourne. Think Defence Force bases. And the States have very large State and Council pubic services, proportionally larger than the ACT Government has for local services, noting we don’t have those two tiers of government. I guess I bristle at ill-informed commentary about Canberra, and took the bait for your anti-Canberra trolling. Still, you might want to update yourself about our fantastic national capital, and maybe even be proud about it. Up to you really, I like my home city and tend not to rubbish other people’s home towns without good reason.
