+xI though channel 10 hard no money? As they couldn't afford to keep the cricket and that other sport. nowhere does it say that they actually want to pay money for the rights, the modern day trend is to let FTA have the sport for nothing just to get it broadcast on FTA

“Network Ten is set to make a major bid to secure the A-League's free-to-air broadcast rights next season”
The words “major bid” would suggest they are prepared to make a commercial bid.

lol, yes it could.
But this comes less than a year after Gallios expensive consultants told us all FTA weren’t interested. The sooner the FFA are gone from this the better, and god help the Championship if the FFA are involved in it.

Fair points. To be fair, I’m already surprised TEN appear to be so keen given their lack of interest a few months back and the current ratings.

I am not at all surprised at the Ten bid and I think it will be reasonable.
I have a few times and think even sent something into the Roar just over 12 months ago, where I outlined the fall out between the new Ten Owners and the Murdoch family... Most if not all dismissed the notion with some saying standing up for FFA ....
In a nut shell Murdoch wanted 10, and had over a long period of time set in motion plans to bi-pass Australia's media laws and after finally winning government approval and making an offer where he believed no other bidder would emerge in comes CBS and Murdoch is left with nothing... and more over had opened the way for a 9 o7 merger with Fairfax. Add to this a number of conflicts in the US and News went to war with 10 & their new owner CBS...
News tho Fox withdraw a number of shows they had with 10, and in reply CBS brought some of their shows with them...
Part of Murdoch's plan was to create a sorta 10 / Fox mega sports brand and Football had been set up for this as first off the rank...
When CBS won control of 10 neither party wanted to deal with each and Football became a casualty of this war ... to the extent 10 has done almost no promotion and have been almost anti Football...
Now the Fox / 10 agreement is over at seasons end and with Fox struggling ... it makes sense for 10 to step in they have money need a sport... further CBS & Fox seem to be showing signs of burying the hatchet so to speak ...
As Waz said there is life in the old girl yet...
To this I would add their are currently two decent papers going around one by the FFA and the other about the second division ... so maybe when we appear united people will listen and pay...

I thought they didn't promote it because all the revenue went to fox. I just assumed if they don't advertise then at least it doesn't cost them anything

But, but all the indications seem to be TEN are prepared to pay something.
I appreciate this fucks up the biters agenda as at the very least it shows not only are TEN interested in paying and broadcasting games but that they want to broadcast MORE games.
It’s a funny old world. I hope it comes off just to see the reaction on this forum 😂

@ Bettega
Fox need to save costs as their eyes are watering with the cost of the NRL/AFL contracts.
Football still plays a part in keeping subscribers through the summer but BBL is now the anchor so they don’t need to keep it, but I suspect they’d want to keep it away from Optus Sport so will pay to keep it, just not “too much”.
TEN want to broadcast more games, a couple of years ago that would be unthinkable but I recon Fox will go for it now in return for some cost sharing on production costs and probably some reduction in what they pay.
If they could 50/50 cost share with TEN on production costs it would save them close to $6m/year which would go to the bottom line and in profits of around $200m p.a. that’s a 3% boost on profits. A CEO would care about that.
The question is, how much money can football get out of this?

The point is that we were being told that 10 is desperately trying to get out of their deal and we are being told the same thing about Fox but it would appear not the case and 10 are actually looking to get more from their deal by outlaying more.

+xThe point is that we were being told that 10 is desperately trying to get out of their deal and we are being told the same thing about Fox but it would appear not the case and 10 are actually looking to get more from their deal by outlaying more. the thing I remember about Fox is that they didn't want to increase the number of games they broadcast, and that clearly is impacting on the FFA's deliberations for the draw next season, and we also know that Fox was wanting to withhold an additional payment because the new team didn't include "Melbourne" in its name I can't recall hearing anything about TEN's intentions, all we know is that the ratings are pretty poor and in reality, it's pretty difficult to imagine an FTA offering money for such low ratings so I can believe that TEN might want to broadcast more games, but I'd say to you that more than likely they'd want to do it for zero dollars, or for the payment of a production fee

I'll believe it when the pigs start flying over my house.
That said, anything that provides competition to Foxtel is undoubtedly a good thing. I just hope for the sake of Football that there is truth in these rumours - Dom Bossi is usually pretty reliable, so hopefully there is.

+xAs we've seen with the current FTA arrangement, the lack of marketing and promotion is the real issue. SBS marketed and promoted the hell out of they A League when they had it. 10 have done virtually nothing to market and promote the product. That has been THE KEY difference. The move to 10 has proven that it is the amount of marketing and promotion that you put into the product that delivers the audience. Wait but everyone told me the reason for SBS poor ratings was because no one watches SBS. The minute it will be on a more mainstream channel it will BOOM. Fact is just the population couldn't give a toss about our league... in fact even the diehards are turning away after the killing of active support and the recycling of the same players playing against the same 10 teams for years.

Another sign that the league will crash lol. I guess that's also why a dozen new entities lined up to be part of the HAL And an A2 just around the corner. Slap in the face for the bitters. The A-League is not going anywhere.

some people on here seem to have missed the bit about 10 getting zero revenue back from it - because fox gets all advertising revenue from the 10 broadcast. so at the moment it is a free filler that might have been used better as a lead in to other shows - if it had a natural viewership that was reasonable. but that didnt work so it's buried and not promoted. the difference with a new deal would be 10 getting advertising revenue. this means they would need to promote it. it would look very different to the current model. ill further spell it out. if 10 got money for games - which they dont now - they would promote and place it better - and it would get better ratings.
