sorry if this seems ignorant but i had no idea we came second in this tournament (we lost on penalties to brazil in the final)
We even beat germany and topped our group.
Can anyone share some light on this it seems this is the best we have ever done at a world cup.

We had a bunch of athletes who dominated at youth level, but couldn’t match it technique-wise when other players caught up physically. And it was played in NZ.
Broken clock is right twice a day.

Watched the penalty shoot out at a bar in darling harbour.
The vast majority of that squad never kicked on.

We lost the final because we were out-triangled and had the wrong body shapes. Our BPO transition was sub par. It all came down to the prevailing milieu and the axioms that were dialectically fallible. Or something.

I remember watching it one afternoon on a weekend, it actually got a fair bit of attention on the news, can't remember anything other that the penalty shootout though.

Remember when Australia used to make & compete in youth World Cups? What happened?

If Farina was smart he would've senior-capped this squad all at once against Oceania opposition, instead of giving NSL-based blokes on the wrong side of 28yo their only Socceroo cap against Bulgaria😐

Jess Van Stratten was our goalie. He had a reasonable career and has picked up a goalkeeping coach gig in the A League.

+xRemember when Australia used to make & compete in youth World Cups? What happened? A mix of great NSL and AIS production? Perhaps back when sport and success was the focus? Sure money has always been part of it but especially from the moment Sydney got the Olympic games, there were coaches and scientists going around to schools in 1993 picking girls at 13 14 to be rowers in 2000. I'm sure football had some similar element of developing solid end products. I think NSL would stake the bigger claim but the AUS produced the goods across a range of sports.

One other thing, the rest of the world invested and caught up. That's why Vietnam and Thailand have improved immensely.

Perhaps it's just a new thread was opened when the questions could have sufficed in the youth team thread. Nevertheless a new thread gets clicks while our veteran threads need something very stimulating to get discussion going in my view.

+xWatched the penalty shoot out at a bar in darling harbour. The vast majority of that squad never kicked on. That's pretty standard for youth squads. Not every kid who makes the team at under 17 or under 20 level goes on to have a stellar career. Some give the game away (for whatever reason). Some never get higher than NPL level. Some had a career at national level (A-League / NSL) but no higher. Some have journeyman careers in Europe And one or two might go on to make a name for themselves in the big leagues.

If you're interested, we also made the semi-finals (finished 4th) in the 1991 & 1993 under 20 world cups. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_FIFA_World_Youth_Championshiphttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_FIFA_World_Youth_ChampionshipI'm pretty sure I watched the 1993 match between Australia & Uruguay, which Australia won with a golden goal - first time FIFA had a match decided by golden goal (unless I'm getting my matches mixed up).

Even looking at the winners, Brazil: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_FIFA_U-17_World_Championship_squads#_BrazilAdriano went on to have a bucket load of appearances for Brazil (senior team) A couple of others had a handful of appearances for Brazil. Most of the others had footballing careers but never appeared for Brazil. 3 of the players in the squad don't have Wiki links, and I'm gonna guess never went on to become professional players.

Good times when we did actually well when we got to a youth World Cup.
Interesting facts: Our u20 team hasn’t won a game since 2003 against no other then Brazil. Of course we haven’t qualified for one since 2013 but this evident for our national team. Our best results were in the early 90s with the semi final appearances.
U17 level: Our best result was this one, and we have made an quarter final appearance under the old format way back in 2001. Since joining Asia we made 2 second round appearances.

It's good to look back at those times with rose-tinted glasses, but I'm sure most people back then would've happily traded all of our performances at junior world cups for just one appearance at a senior one.

@Petszk Of course it does but it does propel their club careers in a different scope if they do well.
Doesn't harm us to do well, we have been pretty poor when we got there and should and can do a lot better.
