A couple of former First Graders suggested tonight  that Denly falls over in his stance.

There have been very few short pitched balls today.

You have a massive problem then. Cos your best bowler aint going to be a wicket taking threat with a Dukes under clouds for the opening 2 days of tests, and he is going to be bowling a ton of overs if you go with a 3 seamer only attack.

Massive problem. If Anderson had not been injured, Ali wouldn't bowl many overs yesterday at all.

FTR - Pattinson has long been Aussie's best bowler in England imo but Sids is looking far more than useful now. It might actually be Siddle now :O

Pattinson removes Joe Denley.

Ben "averaging barely 30 for 2 years now" Stokes comes in at 5... Nopes - its Butler.

Really interested what Australia will do to remedy the team balance. 3 seamers is not enough.

But England is without Anderson in the second innings. So they will have the same problem, for this test at least.

I think the bowling has been fine, the luck horrid. You'll have days like this

All 4 bowlers can put a lot of pressure on the batsmen. I wouldn't drop a batter for an all rounder

How did Wade bowl?

He has bowled a bit for Tassie in last season’s Shield.

Waking up to England 4-260 ish is disappointing for a good collective bowling effort!

I’m vacillating on this issue.

Paine isn’t batting well enough ATM to move to number six, whilst Neser plays at seven.

I’ve never seen Neser bat either.

I went to bed with one wicket down. Only four at stumps. This new much hyped attack of ours let a bloke whose Test averages is a paltry @22 settle in. Where was the short venomous fare from our express men Pattinson and Cummins.  Cummins has lost his penetration, too wide and short same as Pattinson. The pick of our quicks was the old warhorse Pete Siddle.

I wud say better suited to Hazlewood. I saw little or no swing which suits Starc. This is a deck for specialist seamers.

There you are mate. Good nite with the TCA boys?

We musta been watching a different Lyon. He looked ineffective to me .. gave away a boundary from almost all of his first half dozen overs. This picking the so call GOAT for all Test matches is misguided. Horses for courses.. a wristie against the Poms.

Its really not. Its a swinging deck. Pattinson got the replaced old ball too hoop around at 70 plus overs old.

Its a swinging deck. With plenty of turn in the foot marks outside of the lhb batsmen now.

There is almost always swing in England with a Dukes, if the bowler can execute.

You saying it is a swinging deck and that our blokes failed to swing it. The Poms also as I hardly saw a ball move in the air in first innings.. plenty cut back off the seam. 5 LBWs attests to that.

I was not awake at 70 overs. Pity Patto did not get it to hoop at 5 overs.

Okay, but when you need a wicket, and the new ball is less than 4 overs old, and you have to resort to bowling Lyon, I think you have a huge problem. This actually happened last night.

When you have to bowl Lyon, after only 11 overs in the morning, I think you have a huge problem. Again - this happened.

I'm sorry, but this idea of 3 seamers, and a finger spinner, seems problematic to me.

Now Lyon will no doubt come more and more into the games as they go on - but the English openers will laugh in the 2nd and 3rd tests if they bat first and face Lyon before drinks on the first morning.

Aus have a bowler problem here.

I'd seriously be looking at dropping Lyon next test. Bringing in Lasagne to 6.

Play Haze, Cummins, Patto and Siddle.

You just cannot let England off the hook with bowling so much Lyon early in the matches and expect to win.

SA and Ind have both at times flagged the spinner in England recently. Rashid played a test last year and never bowled a ball.

If Lyon is deemed so essential, you have to drop a batsman then and play 5 bowlers.

Gday Paddles,
jaszyjim - As usual just watched what I taped & read all the posts.
I think the question is "why is Lyon being bowled like he is "? = 3 pace men not enough & despite what others think
where is our allrounder to take the pressure off them.
Wade being used as an allrounder is a joke & why weren't other spin options used, with the ball turning so much?
In regards to Paine I will make this last comment & then not comment on him for the rest of the series.
Many of you will have noted various scribes in news outlets now agreeing with me - Smith will be captain when he has served his suspension
and due to what has happened, will be a far better one for it.
Paine may be a good bloke, but good blokes do not necessarily make good captains, he has done the best he can under trying
circumstances, unfortunately under him we will loose the ashes.

Yes - that is what I am saying. It was actually at the 60 over mark. But Wade still had it swinging at mid 70 overs.

I am not sure Cummins is actually able to reliably swing the ball, at all.

Sids gets enough shape on the ball to cause problems but its not consistent, but he is economical and more than did his share of the overs. Pattinson can hoop an outswinger and looked very threatening when he got the ball replaced. He of course was threatening in his early spells too.

I saw plenty of out swingers from Woakes in the first innings, and in swingers from Stokes. If Anderson is fit to bowl later, it will seem like a different city altogether.

It's not Paine's team. It's Langer's team. And Steve Waugh is consultant. And Steve Waugh, I would guess, wanted the batting stacked like it was in his day. But unlike Steve Waugh's team, there is no Shane Warne around (with Steve and Mark Waugh) to leave an attack looking balanced with only 3 big quicks.

For mine, a Shane Watson type would be invaluable right now for Australia in England. On a day 2 pitch, Lyon bowled 28 out of 88 overs. That's 32%! Pattinson is tiring at 16 overs in a day - despite looking the most likely to threaten and take wickets. Which makes Siddle the most important bowler to Australia right now. I don't see an easy fix to this problem.

And what on earth happens if Pattinson gets injured mid match?

I don't buy into dumping Paine just yet, but Carey would seem to possibly be the future. But the lack of an allrounder suited for English conditions is still troubling Australia. Has been since Flintoff in 2005 if I'm right? Cos Watto barely ever wanted to bowl. England for a time between Flintoff and Stokes scraped by with Trott and Collingwood, but - they had Swann as their spinner then.
