Unless the government orders it FFA has to provide foxtel with the content.

Yeh, I agree, I'm sort of saying the season shouldn't be abandoned altogether, that SFC should at least br given the opportunity to confirm its premiership (and then, at that point, if things are serious enough, the season could be brought to a conclusion).

They don't have to cancel the season, but they could do away with finals.
Pretty pointless playing finals if you're getting zero ticketing revenue.
As soon as SFC has won the premiership, they could call it quits there and then.

Roar are expecting their lowest ever A-League crowd for a game at Suncorp Stadium (sub 5k).

Attendances aren't the issue anyway. The money necessary for a professional league comes from the 📺 audience.

Broadcast rights for the A-League are around $45m, and with central sponsorship, club sponsorship and membership and gate takings the total is around $120-$130m pa before the owners put in another $20m to pay the bills.  Broadcast rights may be dominant in other sports in Australia but for the A-League they are a very important contributor to a much larger pie.

The market context is entirely different. They aren't competing with cricket, nrl and AFL for TV money.

They televise professional baseball which is the biggest sport there, professional basketball which was their biggest sport, and professional volleyball as well as numerous other sports.  Football has a lot of competition there.

True, and for the moment, we are making adequate TV money.
We'll see in a couple of years whether we maintain it or not.

This is an important point for us to keep in mind.
Our all time average attendance record was when we only had 8 clubs, and four games per weekend.
We're now up to 11 clubs, soon to be 12 clubs, that will be 6 games per week, and in the near future, we will be up to 14 clubs and 7 games per week.
It's  a near impossibility that we will ever reach those highs from the early seasons when there were only 8 clubs.
Expansion not only means more games per round, but it means more clubs which are starting from scratch, and they will invariably have below average attendances.
We just have to accept that's the case.
We'll probably be sitting in the 9k to 10k range, across the whole league, for years to come.
And that's NOT a problem!

Do you think South Korea has as many arsehats as we do that constantly death ride the league?  Our worst averaging team (CCM) would be siting in 9th on that table.

Need to stop looking at average crowds and ratings as the measure of success and start looking at the players we develop and the success of our teams on the world stage.

I did over react a bit.  They are poor, not awful.
There's no doubt that if Victory and Wanderers were kicking arse the average would look different.

Interestingly Wanderers attendance is up by about 4,400 on last year due to moving to Bankwest Stadium.  Hopefully their attendance will go up if they put a good squad together next season.

AFL crowds dropped by about 5,500 in 2 years when they expanded (37,000 in 2010 to 31,500 in 2012). they still haven't reached 37,000 7 years later (they averaged 35,000 in 2019).

This is an important point for us to keep in mind.

They are not awful.
Most might be down on previous highs, but they are not awful.
Three clubs are over 12k, and the next 5 clubs are over 8k.
That's fine, nothing wrong with that.
As we expand, we'll get more clubs averaging around 5k to 7k, that's normal.

I did over react a bit.  They are poor, not awful.

Interestingly Brisbane Roar have sold out and got larger attendances at Dolphin Stadium than some of the games they have had at Suncorp. Dolphin which is a 5th of the size of Suncorp is obviously more attractive for fans to attend games. If it was 15k to 20k and positioned in the middle of the city instead of the outer northern suburbs, I reckon it would of sold out. Smaller boutique stadiums are the future for crowds in a league. People want to go to packed stadiums. It's simple.

If all games involving Western United are eliminated from the count the average this season so far would be 10,211 compared to 10,584 last season after the same number of games.  While the direction is strongly downward 60% of the drop can be attributed to the addition of Western United to the competition.

I wouldn't be surprised if Macarthur also had a downward effect on average attendance next season but hopefully nowhere near as large.
