This from Twitter. Trends are determined by an algorithm and, by default, are tailored for you based on who you follow, your interests, and your location. This algorithm identifies topics that are popular now, rather than topics that have been popular for a while or on a daily basis, to help you discover the hottest emerging topics of discussion on Twitter. You can choose to see trends that are not tailored for you by selecting a specific trends location on twitter.com, iOS, or Android (instructions below). Location trends identify popular topics among people in a specific geographic location. If you are looking at your twitter page, then what it shows in trends is based on what the algorithm thinks interests you ie, if you don't follow cricket at all, it isn't go to show BBL trending. Trends is also more about how much change occurs in a short period of time, rather than popularity, or number of tweets. You can get a better idea of trends by checking a trend map, that isnt based on your personal history. However, even then, its change, not numbers. Sports events tend to trend, as people start tweeting about them at the same time, creating a spike, and the trend algorithm loves a spike. Has almost nothing to do with popularity however. If the bush fires are getting 50k tweets an hour, every hour, and a sports game goes from 10 tweets to 5000 tweets, then the sports match is `trending`, and the fire is not.

Match reports actually saying the number was 18,038 for the derby. Think A-League site has wrong number

+x17,083 at the Melbourne derby Given that not long ago this game would sell over 40000 tickets, thats more than 20,000 people who decided to give this game miss. I'm not sure exactly how that can be explained.

Though libel is a pain in the arse, we are reaching existential death spiral territory for the A League here.
I don't see what can turn this free fall around. It really had reached that point. We are talking about the thousands of people previously solidly supporters walking away from the competition when the football is the same best it's been in several years.

This season is on the owners. They constantly agitated in the previous seasons (causing huge negative press in the process) saying they could do a better job and their first season has been nothing more than a fuck up. They have no more than 2 seasons to turn this shit show around

I'm not sure exactly how that can be explained. There's never been 40k at a Melbourne derby hosted by Melbourne City. They always play the derby at AAMI Park ( great choice ) unlike Melbourne Victory. So it normally is a crowd of around 24k, not 40k. Having said that I do agree that it is a shit crowd. No derby should be under 20k. Hopefully in future the idiots in charge wake up to their senses and realise people aren't stupid to pay $55 for a fucking ticket.

Thats Melbourne Derby number 5 in 11 rounds. Lets see what derby number 6 in two weeks produces In the AFL there is a real interest between the Adelaide and Perth teams. But not the Melbourne teams. You only have rivalries. Nobody gets excited when Saint Kilda plays Essendon because they are both Melbourne teams. We saw the same when there were three Brisbane teams in the A League And when we get a third Sydney team next year expect the same There is a natural way for determining which regions have the most interest and the most to invest in the game. We have bypassed that for an artificial system where execs look at potential crowds and ratings, then rationalise the poor figures when it doesnt pay off

The same team under Greg O’Rourke is running this years competition as ran last years comp, and the year before. In fact, the ultimate boss of the HAL is still the FFA CEO and then the Board. The owners have been given lip service over controlling the league and that may be the case for the next 3.5 years if reports are true. If we look at this season and what the owners didn’t get chance to do: - they didn’t select the competition start date - they didn’t select the expansion side - they didn’t select when expansion sides would come in, and in what order. - they didn’t select the bye - they didn’t set the fixtures or kick off times - they didn’t select the sequence if fixtures, or the big games - they didn’t get a choice over VAR - they didn’t get to control the referees through their professional games board concept i can’t think of one change that’s been made to this years competition, other than WU and the bye, so why would we expect anything other than more of the same?

The Melbourne derby used to be the pre xmas must see event. Had the electric atmosphere and entertaining battles but City have got greedy gouging fans and in return they have voted with their feet

Correct. It would appear the clubs are yet to take over anything of substance. Recent reports suggest it might be a while yet. Having said that, the big clubs have plenty of influence.

If we look at this season and what the owners didn’t get chance to do: - they didn’t select the competition start date It's been around this time for a while so not sure where you're going with this. I have seen no indication they wish to change the start date. - they didn’t select the expansion side They were heavily consulted, for example sydney fc kicked up a fuss about southern Sydney expansion so it wasn't included. I'm willing to bet they had huge influence over the selection process. - they didn’t select when expansion sides would come in, and in what order. From what I can tell Wsw wanted to delay mcarthur for one year as they wanted a bit of clear air in their new stadium before competition in western Sydney. - they didn’t select the bye Bye was caused by above point. - they didn’t set the fixtures or kick off times Possible, not sure if they were consulted on it. I'm willing to bet they were. - they didn’t select the sequence if fixtures, or the big games Not sure what you mean by that but see above - they didn’t get a choice over VAR Who cares, doubt this changes attendances or viewership at all - they didn’t get to control the referees through their professional games board concept Who cares, doubt this changes attendances or viewership at all i can’t think of one change that’s been made to this years competition, other than WU and the bye, so why would we expect anything other than more of the same? Especially (if reported correctly) they selected WU over MacArthur - definite cock up there.
