One does wonder hey, though he may be scared Kossie will thump him if he gets the same "reporting" style Rini got in the end

What a joke of a thing to say - " a spring in their step".
Spare us Val, please.

Kossie sizes up his Reds squad

NEW Adelaide United coach John Kosmina was a keen observer at his first training session since landing the job yesterday.

Kosmina did not take the Reds session, preferring to talk with youth team coach Mike Valkanis while assistant Luciano Trani conducted training.

There appeared to be a spring in the step of the Adelaide squad as it was put through its paces with Reds players needing to impress Kosmina for a starting 11 berth against Sydney FC away on Thursday night.

Missing from the spirited session were Bruce Djite, Evgeniy Levchenko, Milan Susak and Serginho van Djik who are still under injury clouds while Cassio is still in Brazil undergoing rehabilition for a foot problem.

'a spring in the step of the Adelaide squad' = Val-speak for 'I demanded this change and things are better already'.
Looks like he's changed from bile back to positive non-news reporting. It will be interesting to see how much support Val gives the team in coming weeks, and how bile-free he remains if the second coming of Kossie doesnt produce a miracle.

I give it say a month before Kossie and Val have a huge falling out  . Val is so unbelieveably full of shit.

I find it interesting that you are all saying Val is full of shit, but yet, here we are, for weeks now, bagging Rini and the players. I for one have been critical of this team and coach since early November.

Val can only be criticized if he says something that is not true. This season, i am yet to see that.

Don't forget the off season lads. We had unprecedented media coverage - and it was all positive. I'd argue it was the highest coverage we've ever had in SA soccer history.

The criticism Val received for the articles he did on Reid, Dodd, Stubbins, Fraser, Young etc was not merited. Remember he didn't put words in their mouths. He probably got a whiff of something and went after it, which is what journo's should do. I think he could smell blood. It was those individuals that chose to speak those words so if you have a problem with it, you need to criticize them. For the first time in a while, i'm actually thankful that Val went and did some dirt digging because he may have actually uncovered what happened behind the scenes and helped bring the axe on Rini.

My 2 cents anyway.

I agree RedEye

I only make a point that many others make that he is fluff or bile

I never said his bile was misdirected in the last month at all. As you say, he smelt blood and went for the jugular. He helped bring about change to a degree though I think most of the credit for Coolen's demise belongs to the terraces.

My tweet to Val after Friday night - "Give him hell tomorrow Val. You have my permission to go in for the kill"

I also saw an interesting tweet someone mentioned "attempt to use a 15 yr old child to deflect media criticism has not worked"

As cynical as that sounds it's quite close to the money. Not saying Teeboy didnt deserve a chance but it shouldnt have happened now and in this climate.

but boy, the cheer that went up around Hindmarsh was so loud and telling compared to the last few games there.

Made me nostalgic

Personally I think my problem is with the Advertiser in general. One day in my lifetime I would love to be able to read a local newspaper here where they actually report news without continually pushing their own agendas.

Everything thats been said lately in the last couple of weeks pretty much made it untenable for Rini to continue. Jon Mckain aside, who has been smashed in the media, I feel the players get out of this pretty well. I don't really give a shit what they think of the coach, I would however like to see them at least look like they care out on the pitch and do the job they get paid to do (Hugene excluded- what a superstar that bloke is).

Apologies for the double post, but in relation to Val, the only article I can think of that really annoyed me was the one about sacking Mckain as captain. I know he's not been playing real well, but that article was just ridiculous and vitriolic. He does seem to have very violent mood swings between no 1 fan and hatchet man though.

I'll admit to thinking that article was a tad harsh/mean spirited.
It may have been what a lot of people were saying I spose, but in the only newspaper in town it WAS a bit of a low blow and a tad personal.

LMAO honestly i was hoping for it too. I got home after the game and logged in here around 11pm. I didn't go to bed till 2am still posting. That says it all for me. I was fkng furious.

I won't forget what i saw on Friday night for a long time. People fighting each other in the stands. On my way out there was a near fight on Manton St... the booing etc

And the clincher, which in retrospect is kinda funny, was seeing that idiotic busker from Rundle Mall, the one with the dancing puppet. He was on Manton outside the gates "entertaining" everyone... if you can call it that. And i thought to myself this is what tourists will see as they leave the stadium. A hobo and his dancing puppet. It's a dreadful and unfunny act.

I crossed the road with my mates. We were all disappointed. Then we turned around and looked back at the sorry looking scene of Hindmarsh. And one mate started laughing from the hopelessness of it all. THen we all started laughing! ahh well. Good times.

Was there seriously enough GC fans there to start a fight ?

I find it hard to believe. Maybe they were the target of some frustrations, but causing it? seems like suicidal tendencies to me.

Nah i never said that.

What i saw was our people fighting eachother. Reds vs Reds.

There was an incident in the South stand that had 5 cops and 8 or 9 weasels involved but i was too far away to make out exactly what was happening in that one.

I admit to having a few insane laughs through the evening
The whole crowd had lost it's mind too as a collective

I too will not forget last Friday night for a long, long time.

It was almost impossible to communicate just how bad it was being there to anyone who wasn't.

the amount of people leaving the stadium on 33 odd minutes when i went for a piss was incredible. all were vowing to not return this season

The number of people who think Kossie is a dinosaur etc are far outweighed by the number of people who are glad to see the change though it may take a fair few rounds to completely repair the damage.

i hope we get some results fairly quickly just so not too many of them are lost for too long to pull them back in.

Funny you mention the bolded bit. When someone in front of us got up and left, we made a mental note of them and where they were sitting to see if they went to get a beer and comeback, or if they were gone for good. (NB This is how you entertain yourself folks)

Most had left for good.

I hope they come back for the next home game though!!!

Can we just get one thing straight about Kossie... He wasn't sacked.
Then-owner Nick Bianco asked him to resign after his disgraceful behavior in blaming the ref after we got humped 6-0 in the 06/07 GF. If we lose, we should take it on the chin and promise to try harder next time rather than crying that the refs were against us. Shield that night was, is and will likely die a poor refs bumhole, but we just weren't good enough on the night. fact. Blaming defeat on the ref is for irrational supporters, not the face of the club(ie the coach or chairman) that's just p*ssant-like and makes us look stupid as a club.
It pained me to hear on 5AA that Kossie still appears clueless as to why he was asked to resign.
FWIW: I believe Shield is now director of refs at FFA..oh dear:(

I have been a member since 2004, I remember my excitement going to pre-season @ Galaxy's ground.

On Friday night I left about 5 mins in to the 2nd half vowing never to come back while Rini was in charge.

I blamed the new owners and the coach for taking the gutsy never say die United away.

Then Griffen showed some balls by giving Rini the flick and giving an original Adelaide old boy the job.
Kossie may not be the best coach but he calls a spade a fucking spade and he gets his blokes to play for the shirt with a vengence.
Time will only tell how he goes, but at least there wll be passion & pride back at the club - the only way is up, and I'll be there!

Bow tie too tight? or hit in the eye with a stray pointy-toed shoe? I swear one day he'll bedazzle his playing kit. Doesnt matter, I have a feeling he and Kossie will not see eye to eye on a few things, like the Ukranian's commitment to the game that pays his wages for example.

Not sure how many other Forumites were there but it was great to catch up with Timmo at least.

It was actually really good. There wasn't a massive turn out, 50 maybe??. It was pretty much Glen there from the club plus the Marketing/Media guy (forgot his name?)

I must say how refreshing Glen was. He answered everything that I thought he could within the bounds of his position. The takeaways I got from it:

- Club is run a shoestring. We knew that but they seem really hell bent on getting the bottom line fundamentals correct. Said it was hard to let people go but Bianco and the club had pretty much being living beyond their means from day one. They will post a loss this year. Was quite matter of fact about this.
- Agreed that merchandising was shit, was disappointed with their supplier. In one converstaion he pretty much intimated that Errea were last choice and pretty much the only ones who would take us. He mentioned Nike and Reebok weren't interested in us!!!!
- Discussed Veneto club: Great training facilities, great real estate, poor business choice. Not going forward with Veneto but are looking at 3-4 options. Preference is close to Hindmarsh and mentioned the Brickworks redevelopment and also the Thebby Oval social club venture. These were definitely not to to be taken literally, he just mentioned them. Interesting and fantastic for me as they are both stumbling distance :)
- I asked about the upcoming TV deal and he lit up! Fundamantal to the club and a-league development. He indicated that the club spend between 50-63% of income on player wages!!!! This completely and utterly puts a constraint on any community development, youth teams etc. If the TV deal could cover the wages at least then the club could do a whole lot more. Interestingly he said this was Buckleys number one job and that is being brought forward!
- Club doesn't really get social media (my opnion). Glen didn't answer this well. indicated frustration at Vidosic communicating his back issue via the medium (Didn't ask abot Sir Top Hat & Bowtie's exploits)
- Seemed mystified at a number of things Rini did i.e. change warm up ends
- Members inidcated they were disappointed in the players not staying after the game, acknowledging the crowd etc. Glen agreed. Asked Rini at the beginning of the season that this occur. It didn't...
- I also asked about the 'medical review'. Glenn indicated that this was a beat up by Val. Indicated stats indicated that the Reds were no worse than any other club. There is no issue.
- Seemingly non-existent relationship between FFSA and the Reds and a distant relationship with the clubs. Gave some ripper examples of problems i.e. He invited 10 local club preidents to all expenses paid night in the Reds room for the last match. 2 bothered to get back to him, 1 was from Port Pirie!!
- Glen very apssionate about develolment of the game in indigenous community. Great to hear

After he had finished he hung around and chatted to a few of us:

- Rini was very, very sensative to what Val was indicating. Asked Glen to come out and officially state that he supported Rini. Glen refused becuase of what saying such things meant i.e. the dreaded vote of confidence. Rini didn't get that
- I cheekily asked now that Kossie was back any chance of Flores back on a guest stint. Straight bat to that one. Intrestingly he comes back a fair bit to Adelaide and ALWAYS lets the club know he's back and drops by.
- Discovered a key reason behind the Members committee, constituion etc Club, because they are privately owned, cannot compete for sports development grants. Having a community based organisation means they can seek government money to run development programs etc. Clever.
- With hindsight should have let Rini's original contract run it's course and then reviewed, rather than jumping so hard.
- Teeboy is getting absolutely bombarded with Agents and CLUBS! calling him. they're trying to protect him as much as possible. Indicated that he is still a child.

Sorry for the essay. Like I said he seems a thoroughly genuine person and did not play spin games with us. I think they've learn't a lot through the Rini disaster.

I feel really good about my club again :)

Firstly, if any of you missed the begining of tonight's The World Game, make sure you watch the replay at 11:30pm tonight. Greg Griffin is interviewed on there at length. He is asked ALL the tough questions you can imagine. He held his ground exceptionally well, even when fuck knuckle Fos was sniffing for blood.

I couldn't give a f**k what people say about Griffin in business, "he's a shark", "he's tough" etc... what i see is someone who is the perfect spokesman for AUFC and for soccer in general and he is absolutely brilliant at facing the flesh-eating media. It's very tough doing what he does.

Now contrast that with Aurelio "the pressure is on Victory to win 10 games in a row" Vidmar!

What redtildead said particularly the biggest challenge the a-league is facing at the moment is the next tv rights deal.

Glenn was as open and honest as he could be regarding each question.

The working towards a member based club was explained more clearer.

Yes there have been teething problems but you will see the full benefit from next season and beyond!!!

Secondly, thanks RedTillDead for that detailed run down of the meeting tonight. Appreciate it.

I'm entering ranting territory but i cannot help myself...

on these points:

- Rini was very, very sensative to what Val was indicating. Asked Glen to come out and officially state that he supported Rini. Glen refused becuase of what saying such things meant i.e. the dreaded vote of confidence. Rini didn't get that

- Discovered a key reason behind the Members committee, constituion etc Club, because they are privately owned, cannot compete for sports development grants. Having a community based organisation means they can seek government money to run development programs etc. Clever

Great to hear

what can i say, these owners are switched on. Look at those initiatives. Watch Griffin on TWG tonight. He talks so brutally honestly about the financial model of the A-league and that it needs to change. Switched on. The fact that there was a meeting tonight with MEMBERS proves this even further.

The situation they were thrown in with Coolen was extremely difficult. It took balls to make their decision. they've done it now and kudos to them for doing SOMETHING. The comments above prove once and for all that tweets and comments on here, TV, newspaper and facebook that say things like "new owners are clueless" are fkng retarded and come from intellectually-stunted, moronic half-wits.

fk off the lot of them.
