+xWho are the NRL sides who may under threat? I read Leagues clubs closing will really hurt the bottom line too. North, St Kilda, Gold Coast, Brisbane and GWS will be under strain in the AFL. My gut feel is north and st kilda will be the sides culled for long term sustainability if it gets to that point. Cronulla. They have been trying to move them for a while. Central Qld wants a team. Easts May as well move to hindmarsh fulltime now the stadium won’t be built

It was a reason they have to temporarily move from Shark Park to Kogorah. Must be on extremely shaky ground with what has just gone on.

+xJ-League to restart on May 9th. This I like to an extent because it shows that Japan has it's shit together (compared to other countries). Still behind closed doors I'm guessing?

From what I understand that is actually separate to the club itself. Not sure how exactly.

Yeah it's evidence of what a good job Japan has done in flattening their curve, their people wear masks and actually follow their government's instructions. Seems that they'll be playing at 50% capacity, perhaps leaving a seat free between people in the crowd for physical distancing? https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2020/03/4abaf346b9ea-soccer-j-league-to-resume-first-division-matches-on-may-9.html

Yeah it's evidence of what a good job Japan has done in flattening their curve, their people wear masks and actually follow their government's instructions. That's not the issue here 1 in every 250 people world wide who have the virus is actually an Australian who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and caught the virus in that convenient window of 2-3 days before they were destined to fly back to Australia so they can touch base and disappear into the community before their symptoms began to kick off It is undeniable people in hard hit countries who have been in contact with people who have the virus, and know they stand no chance being treated in their own medical system, are flying to Australia to get treated. We have close to 2000 cases of infections from overseas which would no doubt put us as one of the leading countries for that stat. Not only is our healthcare system crushing under the weight of over 200 infections being reported each day, but if we then get a problem with exponential transmissions within our shores we are fucked. We'll be worse than Italy, Spain and China combined We need to tighten our policies around letting people into this country. Nobody should come into Australia without being tested, and they should be monitored until the results are known We don't have a curve to flatten. Excluding the handful of cases where people have spread the virus in mass, mostly NSW, the number of people catching this thing in the general public has been minimal. Every day we are seeing more and more instances of people who have caught the virus overseas and the maths just doesn't add up any more

Japan is the next best after Singapore, which has maintained a flattish curve the whole way through, while Italy is way, way at the other end of the spectrum, even though Japan might have been exposed a week or so earlier than Italy.

Just stumbled across this on twitter, makes for sobering reading, one of the Australia's biggest sports on its knees, barely a week into the season postponement: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/amid-the-afl-s-great-depression-who-takes-the-hit-20200326-p54e56.htmlLessons for the A-League? Well clearly, we aren't as bloated as the AFL, if you've ever caught a snippet of a game, it's not unusual to see one or two boxes chock full of assistant coaches, statisticians, and goodness knows what else, almost a one for one ratio with the players on the field - all that is going to get cut to the bone. Squad sizes will be cut from 44 to 35, but this bit is the most interesting bit as far as the A-League goes (because I can see us being in a similar boat): "But they will lose in that there will be fewer of them, as the AFL cuts list sizes from 44 or 45 to about 35, if not next year then soon afterwards. The stars will give up far less than the bottom tier, many of whom will lose their jobs or end up floating between state leagues and AFL, as the league creates a "flexible" low-paid player workforce, like a casualised employee. " Note the bolded bit, welcome to the new world of Australian professional sport. In our case, expect to see a list of about 15 full time players, supplemented by youth players. The National 2nd Division? Well, if the A-League can only affor 15 full timers, how many will a 2nd division club be able to afford? (and those they can afford will be lucky to be earning the minimum wage)

The above article gave me a link to this one on the NRL: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/nrl/nrl-s-request-for-stadium-funds-to-fall-on-deaf-ears-20200325-p54dsk.htmlIn case you haven't heard, the NRL has been lobbying the NSW Government to stop all work on ANZ and redistribute that money to all NSW sports bodies (mainly, to them). But: "Prime Minister Scott Morrison said last week the NRL was not high on the government's priority list. That sentiment was echoed by the state government behind closed doors. " Once again, like the AFL, the NRL have big player salaries to pay for, this is what's going to send both of them close to broke. The A-League's season was nearly over, and players are probably only missing a couple of months of their season's salary, so the worst case scenario for most of them is that they lose one-sixth of the annual salary. With most players requiring new contracts from 1 June, the opportunity exist to either slash the salary cap or scrap it altogether, and let clubs pay whatever they can afford, and to allow clubs to also rely on youth players as top ups.

+xJ-League to restart on May 9th. Until they actually start and run smoothly it's hard to get too excited. Japan attempted to start it's basketball up the other day with no fans and it got pulled just before tipoff as some players had fevers. It wont be easy to get these leagues up and running even in the countries that have best handled it.

Here it’s being investigated and a decision to be made soon if ice halls will be turned into morgues in Stockholm and Gothenberg. So people can attend funerals if possible.
they are also streaming funerals and in the worst case making preparations for mass funerals.

This is not an essential project - there will be a massive amount of infrastructure projects but this one was unpopular to start with and will become more so when the dust starts to settle.

Agree but we need an SFS replacement now anyway. With the need for jobs, the government is going to be throwing money at any major construction jobs to get the engine running (this will be one of many). It wouldn’t surprise me if they decided to bring forward Homebush as well. It will but us massively in the red but it’s better that than a depression.

This one is very different though - this time the government is spending going in to the crash, will spend throughout its duration, and will have to spend as we come out of this “hibernation”.
They will build stuff post Corona but I’m not sure a stadium will be the top of the people’s priorities, especially given the objective goons to its redevelopment previously, it’s not a given it will get rebuilt. Certainly not in its intended form anyway.

..... ”NRL clubs are agitating for a major overhaul of the way rugby league in Australia is structured when the game emerges from the coronavirus crisis, using the English Premier League as a template for a new landscape in which they would have much more power.”.,...... “The document, obtained by the Herald, spells out how much greater weight clubs have in the game there than over affairs in the NRL here, with the Premier League "reporting to 20 member clubs”, who are each equal shareholders, and 14 out of the 20 required to vote on a particular issue to affect change. It describes the role of the Premier League management as "to manage and govern the league, monetise the rights globally for clubs, distribute the money equitably amongst clubs to reinvest in talent, stadium and local communities, provide responsible support to lower league clubs and wider football and community development.” According to the document that has been passed around by NRL clubs, 83 per cent of all revenue that flows into the Premier League is passed on to its clubs.” ..... https://www.smh.com.au/sport/nrl/nrl-clubs-look-to-english-premier-league-for-post-coronavirus-shake-up-20200327-p54epj.html

“....growing number of Premier League clubs reportedly want to abandon the current season, despite last week agreeing to extend the campaign indefinitely. All football in England has been suspended until April 30 due to the coronavirus outbreak which has brought the world of sport to a complete standstill. However, it has since emerged a memo has been sent that the league won’t resume as scheduled.
.......
One high-ranking club official added: ‘‘It’s absolutely clear what is going to happen. It’s a worldwide pandemic. ‘‘You just start (the Premier League season) again and there are very few losers. Liverpool, I know. ‘‘But in the grand scheme of things, honestly, it really doesn’t matter. You’ve just got to start again. ‘‘This (Covid-19) is going to get worse here (in Britain), so it’s not about players returning to training. If we all stay at home and self-isolate for the next two, three months, we’re going to get through this quite simply.’’ https://www.herald.co.zw/epl-clubs-now-want-season-cancelled/#liverpoolcantwin #endseason #endepl&ALtoday
