+x+x+x+x+x+x+xForget that fuckhead for a moment. This reintroduction of masks into NSW fucking up Christmas and New Years Eve is fucked. Fucking fucked beyond a fucking joke. 1 000 000 test in the last week. 7 deaths. 145 ICU cases. Fuck right off. Less than the flu mortality now. Absolute fucking bollocks. I feel sorry for any poor bastard in hospitality that has just had their world turned upside down. Ridiculous. /rant. its still early in the virus cycle the early days of Delta it was also thought to be less virulent and look how that turned out its better to be safe than sorry and we still have a number of anti-vaxxers continuing to spread COVID and fill up ICUs Delta is still spreading like a wildfire across the nation its important now more than ever that we listen to the experts and not rely on our feels remember how "I did my own research" turned out... Absolutely no way can I agree with any of this. No fucks given anymore given the low mortality. Time to get on with life. 100% In the UK atm but when I come back, unless a member of staff explicitly asks me (I have nothing but respect for retail workers) I'm not going to be arsed wearing the face tampon which does zero to "stop the spread". If some people want to keep clutching their blankets, good for them- but other people shouldn't have to continue doing so just to make hypochondriacs feel safer. Masks rules in NSW are pretty sensible at the moment - basically in indoor settings/public transport areas ( https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/stay-safe/rules/people-in-nsw#toc-masks-covid-19-safe-check-in-and-vaccination-evidence). I don't see that as being so onerous or unreasonable. In the UK, the rules are pretty much the same ( https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own). So you would support a year of working with a face mask because it isnt onerous or unreasonable? What about school? There is significant data that working 8 hours with a mask forces people to work from home but working from home for another year isnt a bad thing? And what has face masks for some of the time accomplished? 11k cases in NSW today and nearly 4k in Victoria See it wasnt face masks on buses that kept the virus at bay. It was hotel quarantine and compliance on social distancing. Dont forget also, 70%-80% of cases were household to household Australia fucked up. They were operating under the assumption that vaccinated people were 20 times less likely to spread the virus, and a mere 3 weeks into opening up they have slammed on the brakes and crying that hospital systems cant cope with the projected Excel data So now what? We go back to a hybrid approach and dont call it a lock down. And wait patiently for the virus to crawl through our population of 25 million We have a non compliant 90%-95% vaccinated population that were promised if they got 2 jabs they can have their life back. I even saw a youtube ad on it a minute ago. The hysteria and tokenistic restrictions have to stop. Opening up was our plan and there is nothing that can be done to go back And the irony of your post isnt lost on me. A thread full of people screaming about how scientifically backed and tested vaccinations are the only way forward, and then a literal link to a site on how average Joe can "make" their own face mask. They are polar opposite approaches and anybody who thinks constant antagonising of the population is the way forward is kidding themselves Oh boy, this again. Stop moving the goal posts. The current conditions are masks in highly populated areas (e.g. public transport and shopping). You're not going to be wearing a mask when outdoors or eating at a restaurant (unless you're a hospitality worker). Kids have also been wearing masks all last term, so there is also that... I agree that we are messing it up given the hospitalisation numbers in NSW are over 600 already. It's probably too late to reverse course now. Not sure what can be done except hop that the Government supports the hospital system and hope that you don't need to go to hospital yourself. Firstly, NSW is not Australia. Secondly, a quick google on their rules suggest masks are in work places, and they also said work from home where possible. Also having kids with masks at school last term under a lockdown model does not justify a year as the new normal What can or should be done is obvious. We're open now, deal with it. That was the decision we made and the path everybody agreed on. Contact tracing, testing and QR codes (outside of high risk areas like hospitals and aged care) should be gone. There is no point in putting in place measures so we can try to get a neat 5000 cases a day instead of 10000 This was the importance of the federal directive of treating this like every other virus. The toolset of the "suppression" approach is redundant and inefficient. There are common sense principles people should follow like stay home if they're sick, wash their hands, and be alert during high risk times but this is absolutely nothing new February will be the same as January. So will June. Same as December. Whatever Australia is struggling with today will be the same for the next 2-5 years Contrary to "experts" who like plugging data into Excel and drawing straight lines between 2 points we will not be seeing 100000 cases a day. Like every other country (only 1 above 100k by the way) ours will reach a peak, flatline, and operate in waves. This virus will crawl through Australia slowly in waves for the next few years and the current issues will be a constant Having 600 people across the entire state of NSW in hospital - if thats what broke Australia then thats a failure of 2 years of pandemic planning, and not something that tokenistic restrictions can change anyhow

+xBluebird bang on the money with masks and lockdowns. Since we got rid of both covid has practically vanished. Nice try but the point of opening up wasnt to eliminate Covid. A point many can't understand Here's an idea - vaccinate 90% of the population by force and threat of job loss and then stay under wraps

But contact tracing, testing and QR codes are back. You're mad if you think testing should be gone. How will people know if they have COVID? Agree that the virus will simply work its way through the population. It's just a matter of controlling it so our hospitals don't get overwhelmed. Hopefully, vaccinations and social distancing will make this so. Agree that it's poor planning if hospital numbers are straining under 600. I think we were at breaking point when it was 1200, during the delta wave, so I'd hate to see what happens now with greater numbers (despite low hospitalisations with omicron).

Not only that but dozens of footballers have had heart issues before vaccines that ‘comprehensive’ medicals didn’t pick up.

How will people know if they have COVID? Because outside of a few high risk situations like aged care, hospitals or international departures it doesnt matter whether people have Covid or not. We are not trying to stop this from spreading and any attempt to do so would be naïve. We cant stop it, we cant control it, we cant slow it down (without going back to our extreme measures). This is it. This is life Its not the hospital systems being overwhelmed but the testing system. Hours and hours of queues of healthy people sapping up resources at the expense of legitimate people who need to know whether they're infected or not before going to work or visiting a vulnerable loved one. And why? Daily stats? The approach by the general public, as I said, should be treating it like any other flu. Thats what we agreed. If you are sick, stay home. Practice good hygiene. Be alert of seasonal trends. Absolutely nothing new. If 70% or 80% of people continue with common sense practices then this will be managed in the public like every other health response (with a 90%+ vaccination rate as a safe guard) There is no need to shut down businesses, or schools or sports every time there is a case. If people are worried, get an online job and home school. Press the opt out button Australia simply needs to focus on the hospital system, and have a 5-10 year plan for protecting the vulnerable which have to co-exist in an open society. Thats it. Everything else is a waste of resources including daily numbers. We know its out there, we know what we need to do As for your comment "people are getting on with it" - work from home if you have to policies are not a 10 year plan and not getting on with it by any stretch of the imagination. Neither are density caps, other limits or even mask rules. Fining somebody $200 indiscriminately as a public health risk at a super market when the national definition of "people of concern" is 4 hours in a household setting is a contradiction Australia is stuck between opening up and trying to suppress this. The next few weeks are going to be push and pull by large chunks of the population that have found comfort in different approaches *Note: When I say no testing, tracing and no masks I mean they should not be regulated outside of hospital systems, aged care, or international departures. People can still voluntarily do these things but it has to be a balance against those who need priority access given the large number of cases we will be dealing with

Out of interest, here's the current set of laws for the Independent Province of Victoria https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/what-are-the-current-coronavirus-rules-for-victoria/ar-AASg5EIHighlights include fines for 9 year olds not wearing masks and bans on unvaccinated people for most things. Under the new pandemic legislation these laws would have been independently approved by an impartial body

That isn't really a function of COVID, COVID just made people realise its possible. But agree that there is a lot of contradiction in the way things are being done and treated at the moment. I think with the increasing numbers, it will naturally fall towards opening up. I just hope that it is in a controlled (i.e. low impact on hospital) manner.

I was shocked to hear many NPL clubs haven't even mandated the vaccine yet. Should they be allowed to compete in future FFA or FA cups until they do?

If an unvaxed player gets COVID will they do anything different to what is happening now?? Mandate rules have proven to be redundant. Every club, fully vaxed, has had an outbreak? Games cancelled??

Happy new year. Here's the confirmation we knew was coming, but which you mocked. "[Israel] Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said fourth doses, set to be given four months after a [3rd] booster jab" "real-world data shows Pfizer's [3rd] booster protection against symptoms drops as low as 35% after 10 weeks" "Britain is already considering dishing out a fourth jab because of the data showing immunity fades quickly after a [3rd] booster." "One of the Government's own advisers warned it would be impossible to 'defeat' Covid with vaccines if everyone needed a top-up every three months." https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10347407/So-Covid-chaos-end-Booster-vaccine-immunity-weakens-just-10-WEEKS.htmlIn the following research paper from the State Serum Institute of Denmark -- rather than just mocking, jeering and ba'aaing -- see the first graph in the link below. You will see that the Pfizer jab effectiveness drops below zero after 3 months. In that graph, it gets to MINUS 100 after 4 months. Now, I'm not sure what "negative 100 effectiveness" means - but to my logical mind, it means a jabbed person actually have a greater chance of getting Covid after 4 months. This, even though you might scoff, actually agrees with real-world observations. It's just that your limited reading range forbids you to read contrary data, because the Media convinces you it is conspiracy and misinformation. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.12.20.21267966v2.fullIn the above graph, when you see that Pfizer [lack of] "effectiveness" graph from the State Serum Institute of Denmark, where the graph dips into negative after 3 months, the sign of a true devotees is that they keep lining up for the shots that are reaping Pfizer gazillions of dollars, and these people repeat the Media mantra that $3 Ivermectin does not work, in spite of peer-reviewed data that shows a 68% effectiveness if taken early. https://ivmmeta.com/ Incredibly effective marketing by Pfizer. Meanwhile researchers from Oxford University said on 25 December 2021: "we evaluate the association between COVID-19 vaccination and myocarditis, stratified by age and sex, including 10,978,507 people receiving a third vaccine dose. Myocarditis risk was increased during 1-28 days following a third dose ... Associations were strongest in males younger than 40 years for all vaccine types ... " https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.12.23.21268276v1

this is why the moderators should take antivaxer misinformation spreaders seriously... Old Parliament House fire protesters linked to anti-vaccine and conspiracy groupsThe protesters have been accused of spreading Covid-19 misinformation in Indigenous communities Leaders of a group of protesters who set fire to the facade of Old Parliament House in Canberra are closely linked to a complex network of anti-vaccination and conspiracy groups which have been accused of spreading misinformation in Indigenous communities during the Covid-19 pandemic. The fire, which broke out during a protest at the entrance to the building on Thursday, caused extensive damage to the doors and portico. There have been a series of demonstrations by Indigenous groups as well as elements of the anti-vaccination movement and sovereign citizen groups at Old Parliament House over the past days. On 22 December another fire was lit at the entrance by the same group of protesters. A protester posted video of that fire on Instagram with the caption: “These Doors are Coming Down Either Way”. Among the protesters are Indigenous land rights activists, anti-vaccine groups and so-called sovereign citizens. The latter is a fringe conspiracy group rooted in antisemitism and organised around a haphazard collection of pseudo-legal beliefs broadly grouped around the notion that modern government is an illegitimate corporation.Like many other threads of conspiratorial thinking, sovereign citizens have enjoyed a confused renaissance during the pandemic. When footage began emerging during the early stages of Covid-19 of people asking police bizarre questions at border stops or describing themselves as a “a living woman” to Bunnings employees, it was largely as a result of sovereign citizen-inflected beliefs. Before the fire on Friday, a piece of paper was taped to a door at Old Parliament House labelled a “notice of acquiescence by default”. It was addressed to, among others, “The Australian Commonwealth de facto Corporate Administration” and contained a garbled set of legalese mirroring sovereign citizen beliefs. Intertwined with the protesters were various fringe anti-vaccination groups as well as members of the “freedom movement” which has pushed anti-lockdown protests during the Covid-19 pandemic before morphing into a catch-all conspiracy movement.Attempts by elements of the conspiracy movement to influence Indigenous groups have been well documented. As the Age has previously reported, some of those movements have been active in promoting misinformation in remote Indigenous communities. In September the Guardian revealed a group had attempted to push ivermectin into the remote regional town of Wilcannia during a Covid outbreak there. There is no evidence that ivermectin has any beneficial effect as a Covid treatment, and it may be harmful in some circumstances. Leaders of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, established in 1972, condemned the actions that led to Thursday’s fire. “The actions of such protestors conducting a ‘smoking ceremony’ was done so without the knowledge, consent or mandate of the embassy council and traditional owners responsible for the regulation of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy,” it said in a statement. There were claims following the fire that it may have been the result of a smoking ceremony that got out of hand, or as a result of police using pepper spray to disperse the crowd. However, footage on social media showed that the fire was well lit before police arrived at the scene, and ACT police told the Age the pepper spray used was water-based and did not contain an accelerant. Footage taken by protesters themselves shows many of them celebrating after the fire began to engulf the front of the building. The protests were widely condemned by political leaders. Scott Morrison said it was “disgraceful”. “I’m disgusted and appalled by the behaviour that would see Australians come and set fire to such a symbol of democracy in this country,” the prime minister said on Thursday. But the Greens senator Lidia Thorpe, the party’s first Indigenous representative, wrote on Twitter: “Seems like the colonial system is burning down. Happy New Year everyone.” She later deleted the tweet, and the party’s leader, Adam Bandt said: “Greens don’t want to see the planet burning or Old Parliament.” However, he did not publicly criticise Thorpe nor has she apologised for the comment. Old Parliament House now houses the Museum of Australian Democracy. Its director, Daryl Karp, called the fire “tragic” and said damage to the building was potentially irreparable. “To actually be closed, and to be closed because of violent protests is really tragic,” she told the ABC on Friday. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/dec/31/old-parliament-house-fire-protesters-linked-to-anti-vaccine-and-conspiracy-groups

I know of at least five people who have covid (positive on a rapid test), but not bothering to have a proper test as too hard and waiting time too long. They just going to ride it out.
All the LNPs plan to drive official stats down.

All the LNPs plan to drive official stats down. I don't know if that's neccasarily a bad thing if they only have mild to moderate symptoms and are self isolating once getting the result. It means they are putting zero strain on the system with testing, contact tracing and all the follow ups etc.

Otherwise if it is manageable and mild then I'll stay home and get over it. What's the issue with that?

+x+x+x+x+xForget that fuckhead for a moment. If some people want to keep clutching their blankets, good for them- but other people shouldn't have to continue doing so just to make hypochondriacs feel safer. are you going to stop wearing your seatbelt too? Genuinely curious here (assuming you are not a troll account, which by this stage seems fairly likely) but- Before March 2020, did you get your flu jab every year? Or wear a face mask in public during flu season to, you know, "stay safe"?
There are only two intellectually honest debate tactics: (a) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s facts, or (b) pointing out errors or omissions in your opponent’s logic. All other debate tactics are intellectually dishonest - John T. Reed

Thats not a bad thing. Face masks are proven to only have effectiveness for people who actually have Covid in terms of reducing their spread. So the protocol is a targeted precautionary approach for a specific situation to mitigate risk. Its a balanced decision, like the 4 hour rule or the 7 day period. You'll also find that staff in hospitals who handle Covid patients also wear them, amongst other protective measures. You'll also find that they have worn them long before 2020 Having every single person across the state in all circumstances they are indoors out of their own private home wear a mask at all times for months on end on the off chance they might have Covid is no different to calling everybody a contact or putting everybody into lockdown. It is a desperate extreme approach and extreme measures are only proven to be effective in short bursts when the situation is critical There is a reason agencies dont have a fire drill every 5 minutes. There is a reason people dont have to wear seat belts on their couch, or helmets when they arent riding their bike The 100% fact of it is that after opening up, face masks on public transport did nothing to slow the spread like it was supposed to. Remember the only restriction NSW kept? And now that every open state has face mask laws as their primary tool for controlling the spread, which open state would you say is in control of their outbreak and has what they would deem optimal numbers? NSW before opening - 200 cases a day. NSW after opening - 20000 cases a day. NSW if they were open with extreme mask laws - speculated 18000 cases a day. Is that the difference between being in control or not? And thats only speculation The fact is the agreed national definition of a contact is 4 hours and in a household type situation. How many people in those circumstances are wearing a mask for the duration of the time? Thats why they dont make a difference outside of specific targeted circumstances as part of a collective approach Ultimately, I think you already know face mask laws are nothing more than political and tokenistic for our circumstances. 2022 will be year of the mask and the only point that will serve would be to piss off everybody who did the right thing when Australia needed it most
