+xNRL kicked off, AFL just about to and here we are only thinking about it. Talk about being the slow country cousins. Not quite. AFL and NRL have to complete months of competition, the A-League only had weeks to fit in.
Besides, it’s doubtful Fox Sports are playing hard ball with the other codes unlike football

“We are now looking forward to the agreement of our broadcast partner, Fox Sports, to our fixture proposal and timings. "That’s the final piece of the jigsaw and once we have it in place we can move forward quickly.”
Have Fox joined the party yet?

I agree. Firstly, there was no reason for Johnson to say at the very start of the pandemic that the A-League would be postponed until August. Why say that so early? Why set a commencement date 5 months into the future? That never made any sense. Secondly, with things getting better around the country within 4 weeks of lockdown, plans, or at least a few options, should have been in place right there and then. To me, it looks like they have been asleep at the wheel.

+xNRL kicked off, AFL just about to and here we are only thinking about it. Talk about being the slow country cousins. Football is in a very different position when compared to the AFL and NRL. Pro sports has a revenue cycle similar to the tourism industry. They make many during the season and make next to zero money in the off season. The AFL and NRL have had their no revenue period extended by months which puts a much bigger urgency on starting as soon as possible. Their budgets are very much determined by the revenue forecast created by known start date of the season. As soon as that date got pushed out, their budgets became irrelevant. The HAL have received 'all' of their annual broadcast money as well as three quarters of their regular season sponsorship and game day revenue. That means there is less of a financial incentive to start the season urgently. If it was not for issues with Fox, I guarantee this HAL season would have been cancelled completely. Without game day revenue, no matter how it is done, it will be a short term financial loss for all involved. That being said, the one issue the HAL has that does create some urgency is the issue of the player contracts ending this weekend.

If you think Fox Sports haven't played a big part in our inability to make a decision/announcement you're a fucking idiot I agree they've played a big part, no doubt, but doesn't it underscore the key point: we have zero clout. With broadcasters, with sponsors, with government, there is zero clout. I'm not just talking about Johnson here, Nikou took over as Chair about 20 months ago. Has barely surfaced in that time. Zero clout.

It sounds like they had a plan very early in to this process - that plan being a hub in August, it seems you’re just complaining because you don’t like the plan
Football doesn’t need to be playing in June and July. AFL, NRL does.
You’re starting to look like you’re making stuff up and then complaining about the stuff you made up?

His words have more been much more circumspect talking instead about 'as soon as possible'

Doesn't quite gel with the August start date allegations. Anyway, its great to get some serious news about a start date.

At the very start of the lockdown, it was reported that the FFA was postponing the league until August.
Amendment: Apologies, I'm wrong, the earliest announcement I found was 1 May, which is four weeks ago.

This is what I see on May 1st FFA has refused to set a public target date for the resumption of the A-League - nor has it revealed how it plans to stage games or if the 'hub' concept being contemplated by the AFL and NRL could be used - but it remains committed to playing on as soon as state and federal governments allow it. Club sources indicate, however, that even a return to training is not likely to come until July at the earliest.
