how much media coverage and promotion do the afl/nrl have
it's everywhere there is no room for football

The reason is ratings. It’s that simple. Unlike the HAL, lots of people watch AFL and nrl.

Thursday night ratings
AFL - 695k (7), 269 (Fox)
NRL - 325k (9), 242 (Fox)

Friday night
AFL - 619k (7)
NRL - 328k (9)
dunno about fox

The HAL got 12k

No disrespect but you don’t know what your talking about with what big clubs try to do in Europe.

They don’t have rules for marquee players, they sign these players in order to win things that matter the most in European football.

They have no salary caps, or no absurd restrictions on player or loan systems unlike here.

You want to talk about 60K derby crowds? Good luck trying to get a sold out derby crowd in the summer these days because that won’t exist due to a league that has lost its lust.

You liked tonight’s game? Well good luck getting a similar tempo during 30 degree heat or high humidity during the summer on a December night.

You know that pro-rel exists outside of Europe right? Do a little research next time.

Enjoy your vino Enzo.

I've enjoyed-mostly- the last 15 years.  A winter switch, and P and R will mark the beginning of the end of fully professional football league in this country.  And  the end will come far sooner than anyone thinks.  What will follow will be "authentic", and in 120 years, well who knows, maybe even fully pro.

The BEST thing anyone can say about BOTH FTA and Pay television ratings figures is that they are "verrrrrrryyyyyyyyy rubbery".

As the TV stations themselves OWN the ratings companies 100%, they can make the numbers say WHATEVER they "damn-well" want them to say!!!

AND GUESS WHAT SUNSHINE?!?!?!?.............................That's EXACTLY what they do!

It operates on an "honor system" and like ALL honor systems they are SERIOUSLY ABUSED!!!

We were recently told that BOTH NRL and AFL had more than THREE BILLION viewers watching their their competition returns!!!

How do we this???.....................................OzTam said so!!!

And if the 100% owned and controlled mouth piece of CH's 7, 9 & 10, with "huge vested" interests in NRL, AFL and Cricket say it's TRUE, then of course people like YOU will unquestioningly believe it!!!

BTW, I have a "second hand" Sydney Harbour Bridge for sale, that I want to sell to you.............................It's a bargain mate, a special deal just for YOU!.......................ONLY $15 Million, BUT you have to ACT and buy TODAY!!!

Anyway, for the REST of us, who DON'T just believe everything we're told, especially "stats" coming from such a dodgy source as a ratings agancy, we say TOTAL BS to their ratings figures!!!

Following is an article from the Guardian seven years ago.

It tells the story of another type of EXTREMELY DODGY "ratings agency", all be it this time, of the financial services industry kind, which run their business by SELLING "investment grade ratings' to the highest bidder in the market place in return for huge fees.

In this particular story, BOTH Standard & Poors and Moodys Investment Services "rated" Investment Bank, Lehmann Brothers, as "A Grade" investment vehicle LESS THAN ONE WEEK before the company collapsed and set off the 2008/2009 Global Financial Crisis, which still affects the World today.

A short extract from the article;

Until six days before Lehman Brothers collapsed five years ago, the ratings agency Standard & Poor's maintained the firm's investment-grade rating of "A". Moody's waited even longer, downgrading Lehman one business day before it collapsed. How could reputable ratings agencies – and investment banks – misjudge things so badly?

https://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/sep/13/lehman-brothers-was-capitalism-to-blame

BEWARE the CLOWNS, who quote these so-called reputable ratings agencies and their dodgy rubbery figures as the GOSPEL TRUTH............................LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!

thanks for the lecture.

However, when someone confuses “ratings” as a basis for television viewership numbers, with “ratings” which are used to assign credit risk to a financial companies, it becomes quite clear they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about

NO but if you can't see the DIRECT relationship link between the two dodgy ratings systems, then you're the twelve year old and a TOTAL WASTE of space as well.

BTW AFL fanboy, why don't you just go back to your Aussie Rules, instead of "haunting" a Football website?......................Aren't "FINALS" about to start????

I mean, according to OzTam's predicted figures, the viewing figures for YOUR GAME'S upcoming final's series, are expected to peak in the TRILLIONS of people!!

Apparently, they're expecting the ENTIRE UNIVERSE to be tuned in!!!!!

The HAL got 12k

They put up some figures on Offsiders for the Friday night ratings, even the Super Rugby got something like 45k on Fox.
We should be able to get something like 45k, it shouldn't even be an issue, we just should, but to be around 12k, well, that's rock bottom, they are NBL numbers.

helps if people actually know if there are games playing. fox and the ffa are to blame for such poor numbers.

fox and the ffa have done an absolutely shithouse job of advertising this or getting it into the news.  what the fuck are they doing?

the ffa need to sack their entire marketing department. it's shit now. it's been obviously shit for quite some time.

Advertising is paid for by the boost in consumption it brings.  If Fox advertised, and got a 50% increase in viewers, that's an extra 6000.  What would fox be willing to pay for 6000 more viewers.  Not much I suspect, and it's not realistic to expect them to spend more.

You're an absolute Goose mate!

A financial rating company can fudge ratings to the benefit of all it's customers.

But TV ratings are something of a zero sum game.  Fudge figures to make one station look better, makes the others look worse and COSTS THEM MONEY.

You get that right?

Ratings dictate what percentage of corporate Australia's add spend is spent on each station.

It doesn't increase the add spend.
So seven can only make more money from adds at the expense of other stations, and as you pointed out, it's jointly controlled.

Which is the point.  The stations wanted to know that other stations were not fudging the market.

Even if that were not true, why wouldn't they get the A league rights in the cheap, then just fudge the ratings to show 200k viewers every week.

That would be much more profitable than paying a fortune for AFL, NRL rights.

Best part of your argument is the shouty caps, and all the lol, lol, like.  Rest of it is rubbish.

People can moan that we're not getting coverage in the media etc, but the league isn't putting on a good show at the moment.

It has become far too predictable, people assumed perth were going to win last night. And Sydney was going to win against wellington. And ot happened like clockwork.

The a-league needs to get its unpredictability back.

Like most TRUE Football supporters, I could NEVER be bothered with the abomination that is Aussie Rules and detest the "cowards" that BOTH play it and support it!

During WW1 when Football players were fighting and dying at BOTH Gallipoli and the Western Front, Aussie Rules players were hiding at home!!!

If you never knew , then you are not a real supporter.

Exactly

When the A League was kicking off has been a point of contention and a frequent spot in the news. Anybody with the slightest bit of interest would have known about the revised format and constant delays / fixture reshuffles as a result of bad planning

Seriously, the people here want civil servants to go around knocking on people's doors and telling them there is a game on

A football historian wrote a book on this subject, can't remember his name.
He says that in the lead up to WWI, football was bigger than AFL and both rugbies, but because so many footballers volunteered for the army (for Australia and the UK), the game went into a steep decline, and probably never started recovering until the post-war immigration boom.

Wont ever read about that in  a Murdoch rag or 'Big Footy'

FFA better get back to the negotiating table with Fox to re introduce a pre-match preview and add more variety or I will huff and puff and
blow the house down with a turd! That coverage cannot continue throughout ALL of next season. It's as boring as a sixties meal of steak with 2 veg!

The season is practically over & Foxtel knows it.  They're not fussed about seeing out the season in this current vanilla way.

For example at the Sydney/Wellington game.  One camera up top & one camera on the sideline & no VAR & no pre game show tells you everything you need to know. I've seen NPL games with better coverage.

Fox ratings tell us nothing, who would possibly have Foxtel hooked up when there is no sport on? The fact that far right news shows top the ratings tell us all we need to know about Foxtel. Until we get streaming figures we dont know anything but the fact that Fox was willing to pay 30mill tells us that they know there is an audience subscribing purely for a-league.

FTA ratings on ABC were pretty much unchanged, at 53k it isn't great but with all the hype and exposure and multiple games a week, the NRL is only managing 320k metro audience. The AFL is clearly doing well but again this is only because of its strength in Melbourne on FTA.

Football needs to get back to producing world class players, the current set up has stifled that. It also needs to reconnect with it's history, tradition and community. That is what the game needs to focus on, not on Foxtel numbers forcing us to play a mickey mouse BBL league in summer.

ON the one hand, I accept the point that for Rugby to get 5 times the ratings of the A-League is very worrying, given Rugby's problems, and also the fact that Fox tried to obliterate them even more than football, AND don't forget that currently rugby is a hastily cobbled together comp with 5 teams (and they only have 5 because the Force was resurrected).
On the other hand, rugby has been on Fox since the start, so probably attracts lots of subscribers who are rugby fans, not to mention there is probably a big crossover with league fans.
I would have thought that in Melbourne there is some crossover with football and AFL fans, not sure, someone from Melbourne can confirm one way or the other.

Posts like this piss me off no end.  Absolutely deluded or mentally deficient.

Amateur?  Do you even know what the word means?  Tell me in what way is a 60,000 plus  crowd of paying customers for a local derby "amateur".  You think your authentic Euro model will get that in your life time? Enjoy your Euro  Model with its winter, P and R, no salary cap all in front of 5000 for a "derby:, until in 2 years time it collapses and that my friend will be then end of fully professional football in this country.

As for sugar hits". you do realize "sugar" hits are what the very best clubs in the very best leagues rely on to stay at the top which is what keeps the punters coming back match after match.  Virtually every player  in every top 4 team in every top league is a "sugar hit"- clubs spend hundreds of millions year after year after yea to buy them, to keep winning to keep the fans coming in.

Well that's rich for the bloke who used to pretenda to speaka the bad english

Most fans know the season is over, and that anything other than a East Sydney FC title is a joke.
