Given that players have been making these moves for years now, even when the A-League was paying a decent wage, just goes to show that the global market will always tempt some to look further afield.

Let the other leagues pay for some of these players instead.

When there’s no money left, that’s the way things go.

It seems that at least Alex Wilkinson gets it:

“It’s important that the standard on the pitch is high and we’ve got quality players.

“If the standard on the pitch is high and we’ve got people watching the games, hopefully we get more interest (from) potential broadcasters.”
https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/football/a-league/20m-aleague-exodus-raising-red-flags-ahead-of-new-season/news-story/4b5f7842987af325a617140843436a5f

Unfortunately Alex, many think that you are all overpaid and that Foxtel will still pay millions to broadcast even if it is teams of kids on $50k wages.

Cue comments about Wilkinson being overpaid and he’d never get a gig anywhere else anyway etc etc

There is a solution. Raise visa player numbers.
Clubs can save money and we get better quality. 7 or 8 per club should do it.

Might be a paradigm shift in a way we think about our priorities.

I believe the FFA no longer wants to compete against the likes of the J-league or the Chinese Super League, but instead, send as many of our players overseas as possible, because it wants Australia to do well at the world cup

Spot on

which leagues are better?
Lets say Jap, SK, SA, etc.
now if we are 6th in Asia players should be going there and getting more money due to the plus one.

As we slip behind Thailand and Vietnam send them there also.

Sign longer  contacts so clubs can get paid.

Its still not that simple as Asians seem to want older players but perhaps in the future younger players can end up there if they can’t make Europe.

From a football perspective hopefully players want to play at the highest level. We have NT players in the league which isn’t even close to the best in Asia.

Its been that way for some time really, as the amount of money available climbs significantly in numerous Asian leagues.

We have next to no chance of competing even with no salary cap, and like it or not, the FFA are now beholden to the wishes of the club owners.

If the club owners want a salary cap it will stay, but if they can get the PFA to agree I am sure the floor will also be reduced to reduce the pressure on some clubs.

The days of clubs looking to sign players like ADP, Ono and Cahill have likely been and gone, as they haven’t proven to be sustainable commercial strategies. Even the MLS has largely looked to move on from that focus, Instead trying to increase revenue streams by developing players for transfer fees.

It is easy for players to sit there demanding more money, but ultimately if the product hasn’t generated enough money to pay for it, changes have to be made. We may not like it, but we aren’t the ones paying the bills, and yes even rich people don’t want to lose money year on year for limited benefit.

Agreed

I believe we should just forget about the ACL as we are gonna get eliminated from the format anyway as we can no longer compete, financially speaking.

But I do wonder if because of Australia's financial position, the AFC cup is going to be a better fit for us instead of being in the ACL. It should be something that should an NPL club win the A-league one day strive to be the winners in the AFC Cup.

MVFC/MC/SFC and maybe WSW could all afford to pay more

id say the other 8 teams couldnt but how is that different to any other league in the world?

every league has big clubs and small clubs EPL has the 'big 6', La Liga has big 3, Germany has 1, France has 1, Scotland 2.... etc etc

Only way the league is going to get better is if clubs have more freedom but also a lot more pressure.

Need promotion and relegation

Need more teams

need no cap/floor

Of course 'marquee' Socceroos does more for the game then any more over the hill marquee the AL can bring.

Just look how much media and disappointment there is for Mooy leaving the PL and he isnt even that marquee.

Players you could be proud of are almost non-existent for the Socceroos. We dont have anyone playing UCL really anymore no one competing at the highest level for trophies.

I remember how much media Kewell got when he went to Liverpool the FFA needs a shot in the arm with a top level talent.

Right now Basketball is experiencing a lot of media attention becuz of Ben Simons etc are in the NBA

No one thought that the AL would be so inferior at producing talent then the NSL but is has been (the AL die hards might not like it but it is true). I dont blame the AL itself it is the useless NYL and the lack of investment into development by the FFA and the idiotic Dutch development program we took over you got to blame people like Fozz in the media for pushing this stupid program though.

In fairness Verbeek did try tell us but the FFA didnt want to hear it becuz they kept putting money ahead of football.

We have to start again but we cant agree on the best way to bring football back into the lime like

‘ISL competing with China, Korea and Japan when it comes to wages’

The Indian Super League is now competing with Australia’s A-League when it comes to providing financial benefits to players. Once seen as a benchmark for the rise of club football in Asia, the A-League has found tough competition from India’s premier football league, says a report published in Ftbl.com.au.

According to the report, the ISL’s rapid growth has resulted in increased financial clout, ‘making the league much more appealing to a wider range of quality players at younger ages than ever before.’ Roy Krishna last year bagged around a 15 percent hike in salary with a USD 3,75,000 (approx.) annual contract with ATK, after spending six seasons at Wellington Phoenix, winning the A-League Golden Boot preceding the 2019-20 season.

ISL clubs have continued to make smart acquisitions from the A-League heading into the 2020-21 season. Gary Hooper joins Kerala Blasters, while 25-year-old Australian defender Jacob Tratt joins Odisha FC and Joel Chianese moves to Hyderabad FC, both from Perth Glory. Adam Le Fondre (Sydney FC) and Brad Inman (Brisbane Roar) continued to be heavily linked with transfers to Mumbai City FC and ATK Mohun Bagan respectively.

Bengaluru FC CEO, Mandar Tamhane recently pointed out that ISL clubs are no minnows when it comes to player remuneration.

“We are probably one of the top 5 nations in Asia if you discount the Middle East countries. But, if you look at the eastern side of Asia, and look at China, Korea, Japan, the ISL is competing with them in terms of wages. In the initial years of ISL, we had marquees, creating an awareness that there is a league in India called the ISL where Alessandro Del Piero, Robert Pires and Nicolas Anelka come and play. That’s why we have been able to convince some really good talents to come and play in India,” he said.

An Asian football industry expert said, “The A-League has run into trouble with the broadcasters Fox Sports, who have halved their AUD 57 million annual funding. This coupled with the post-COVID-19 football market, clubs have told players to accept up to 30 per cent pay cuts. No wonder an ISL contract will be much more alluring as Indian football continues to invest and grow.”

The ISL’s clear roadmap and expansion plans are starting to overshadow the Australian structure. While the ISL aims to introduce promotion from 2024-25 onwards, the Football Federation of Australia Chairman Chris Nikou does not see such implementation anytime before 2034. The ISL was accorded top-flight status by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) last year and the winners are now guaranteed a direct group stage spot in the Asian Champions League, a first.

According to David Williams, who joined Roy Krishna from Wellington to ATK, the atmosphere in the ground after his side’s semi-final win over Bengaluru last season was ‘something never experienced before’. Apart from the monetary benefits, playing in front of passionate fans is an added advantage.

With ATK joining forces with Mohun Bagan, and East Bengal possibly joining soon, the ISL will become an 11-team affair with the league progressing structurally. The rapid strides made by ISL in the global arena is attested by the investment from Manchester City’s parent organisation, City Football Group (CFG), in Mumbai City FC. (ANI)”

The fact that a 100 year old club like mohun bagan has to merge with a stupid franchise like Atletico Kolkota is stupid but at least Indian football is finally waking up to the fact that their former system of ISL franchises and I-League clubs scrambling over each other in the same space was dumb and having a united pyramid including their big traditional clubs is the best way forward.

We are hardly losing our best talent. For the most part we are losing average a league players to India. This may change longer term, but may not be a bad thing necessarily as it may force changes to things like salary cap removal and longer term contracts for players to get transfer fees.

IMO the reason we are targeted by a lot of Asia is because 1) players will go for a cheap fee 2) there is a high chance players will come for free due to the mutual termination or out of contract players.

(ANI)”

This is also a stupid comment. You cant discount half the confederation then say you are top in the top 5 paying leagues of the AFC. If that is the case, if you discount the other 46 members of the AFC, the A-league is the highest paying league in Asia.

Their quality doesn't mean they don't pay high wages, and this is besides the point. You cannot take out half of the leagues of a confederation to suit your narrative. You are either a top 5 paying league or not. What they have said is, they are a top 5 paying league if you discount half the confed which is stupid

The Indian League will likely significantly grow, as it should in a country of over 1 billion people. Pure fan base and sponsorship potential is magnified many times what we can generate.

I also heard a podcast yesterday about the K-League where they were discussing losing players to other Asian leagues, and how they can’t compete financially. It’s time we also think smarter, not trying to overextend ourselves unnecessarily.

The aim should be to create a conveyer belt of talent destined for Europe first, but also Asian clubs that are willing to spend big. That way we ultimately become a game that can invest that money for the future, strengthening the overall structure through the tiers.

The right transfer structure in this country that actually rewards clubs throughout the pyramid for their work in a players development is key to a sustainable future.

If you have the likes of the K-League starting to find it tough, it shows what a battle we have on our hands.
