Perth played in a grand final three years ago

Yeah, a one off haha may be if we had won it wouldn't feel as bad. Fortunately the club has been around long enough to build a core loyal fan base of 6-8k who will go regardless.

Perth were/are still dog shit for essentially 10-15 years.

Not true at all. They have been competitive about half of their seasons. Sure, they have their crap seasons but every 3rd season or so they do well. They've never gone 6 seasons of being crap like WSW has.
19/20 finished 6th / knocked out in semi final
18/19 Premiers / Lost GF on Penalties
16/17 finished 5th / knocked out in semi final
15/16 finished 5th / knocked out in elim final
12/13 finished 6th / knocked out in elim final
11/12 finished 3rd / lost GF
09/10 finished 5th / knocked out in elim final

They have been absolute crap on field for 6 consecutive seasons. Doesn't matter how passionate the fanbase is, 6 straight seasons of not being remotely competitive is going to have an effect. I don't think any other AL club has had such a long run of poor results. A free ticket promo is a smart move. Should get some more people to jump back on board. They just need to keep up the on field results.

I thought WSW had the most intense passionate loyal fans right in the heartland of Australian football.

Why do they need free giveaways for their matches?

You’re asking the wrong question. You should be asking why they haven’t been doing this sooner. Victory are also offering $20 GA tix this Friday.

This is my calculated rough guess of how average attendances will go this season:-

Adelaide United   7,500
Brisbane Roar   8,000
CentralCoast Mariners   6,000
Macarthur Bulls   4,500
Melbourne City   7,000
Melbourne Victory   17,500
Newcastle Jets   7,000
Perth Glory   6,000
Sydney FC   12,000
Wellington Phoenix   7,500
Western Sydney Wanderers   10,500
Western United   5,000

Total   8,250

If Australia goes in to recession we could end up copping a hiding like we did during the GFC.

I'd imagine about the same, except Sydney's will be significantly higher unless they have a woeful season. They've already had nearly 40k punters through the gates for the first two games (which would have been a lot more if it weren't for the monsoonal conditions at the Victory game). Add two home derbies for another 70k (40k in the first one due to the new stadium smell, 30k in the second), another Big Blue and a home match in the last round for ca. 15k each, then even if they only average 10k in the rest of their matches they will still end up with a 16k average. If they perform well on the park and get 15k for the run-of-the-mill games, then that average could get close to 20k, but I wouldn't bet my house on that happening.

Wanderers crowds might pick up too if their form continues, since there's presumably large number of disaffected fans willing to come back if there is a winning team to watch. Victory looking dicier.

I still think somewhere between 8000 and 9000 is probable. Before the season I was hoping closer to 9000, but it might end up being closer to 8000. Thing is, if you take out WU and Macarthur's woeful crowds, the average of the ten pre-expansion clubs may end up being near or even over 10,000, which is getting back to the A-League's historical average.

The most encouraging sign this season, more than raw numbers, has been the return of decent active support at Victory, Sydney and Wanderers. That itself can go a long way to winning back to attending games in person. The first Sydney derby at the new SFS could provide a new benchmark there.

There is also room for growth beyond this season. Brisbane and Perth are being run like trash, and alongside WU are basically homeless for most of the season. Macarthur should be able to grow to at least Mariners-level crowds in the short-term. Wanderers have been terrible on the field for 7-8 years, but may have turned a corner under new management, and on-field could win back their earlier fanbase.

Resolve those issues, and add in a bump from the WWC, and perhaps some further investment in marquee players and marketing, and 2023-24 and future seasons might get a sizable bump from this year.

If the A-League can expand to 16 teams over the next few years while retaining average crowds at around the 10k mark, I would consider that a win. Doubly so if the NSD is established and proves to be viable (even with far more modest crowds, probably more like 1-2k) over the same timeframe.

WSW and MC are expansion franchises

At this stage, finishing above an average of 7,000 for the season will end up being a good achievement.
Probably need to accept that this is a league that will need to make ends meet with that sort of long-term average attendance. current TV rights and the level of media interest that goes with the first two.

I doubt anyone went to that game who otherwise wouldn't have just because Nani was playing.

Brisbane are probably going through the same thing Sydney were going through last season, but doubly so. The team is uninspiring, the ownership has checked out, and fans are tired of schlepping out to Redcliffe to watch dross. Who can blame them? The best opportunity for a reset is that the Bakries cede control of the club and they move back to central Brisbane full time, either at Suncorp or (preferably in my view), Perry Park with temporary seating, in line with what Perth has just done with Macedonia Park.

If WSW continue their positive start to the season, they should help lift that average above 8k. We know there are a lot of dormant WSW fans which could return if they continue to stack on the wins. A win against SFC in two weeks could really help bring some fans back to games.
