Sadly the @aleaguemen is just not working on FTA TV this year. Ratings last night were so low it caused @Channel10AU to finish as the 11th most watched channel of the night.

10's multi-channels had more viewers than the main channel last night. #aleague

Ten’s bid for AFL broadcast rights hampered by poor ratings

Ten’s audacious pitch for the broadcast rights to the AFL comes as the network’s existing catalogue of live sports has recorded a dramatic ratings slump over the past few months.
Ten’s audacious pitch for the broadcast rights to the AFL – the most lucrative media sports deal in Australia – comes as the network’s existing catalogue of live sports has recorded a dramatic, across-the-board ratings slump over the past few months.
Ten’s bold bid for the AFL rights would see home-and-away and finals matches spread across its free-to-air channel and its streaming partner Paramount+ from the beginning of the 2025 season.

But the network’s push to wrest the contract away from current rights holders Foxtel (majority-owned by News Corp, publisher of The Australian) and Seven could be compromised by its diminishing audiences for its coverage of the A-League soccer, the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, and the Melbourne Cup. Foxtel and Seven have shared the AFL broadcast rights for the past decade, with their current deal due to expire in 2024.

In 2015, Seven, Foxtel and Telstra signed a shared, six-year $2.508bn deal for AFL broadcast rights, which was extended to 2024 with a two-year $946m agreement.
AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan is looking to finalise the code’s next TV rights deal before he vacates his role at the end of this season. The AFL boss met Ten’s co-chief executives Beverley McGarvey and Jarrod Villani in the US a fortnight ago, where it is understood the future of the AFL rights was discussed.

Ten executives are said to be desperate to add a top-tier sport to their content slate, given the other Australian commercial networks and pay-TV operators share the rights to the so-called big four – AFL, NRL, cricket and tennis. But Ten’s recent returns on its investment in live sports could give the AFL pause for thought.

In the first year of Ten’s five-year, $200m deal with the A-League and W-League, the sport’s ratings have tanked.

The regular season’s matches have averaged just 86,000 viewers nationally, and 65,000 into the lucrative metro markets, according to ratings agency OzTAM.
Such numbers not only put soccer’s television ratings well behind those recorded by the AFL and NRL, but they also lag those of Super Rugby, Super Netball, AFLW and the WBBL.

A Paramount spokesman defended the network’s ratings for the A-Leagues (men’s and women’s competitions).
“We are really happy with the direction the A-Leagues is headed … numbers for football on Paramount+ have been strong and matches that are livestreamed on 10 Play are performing well. We are committed to the game and are confident that TV audiences will only continue to grow.”

Realisticall, the league isn't being really followed except for diehards who most likely have paid for paramount plus and are watching only on paramount plus.

Yea it's shit but that's Australian football atm, not the first time a decision was made that back fired massively

I was more or less having a dig at what the spokesperson said, but I agree that it's likely fans/diehards watching.

Ohh I agree but I think at this point with all the issues this season covid and border restrictions, most of this season has just been getting the season played and finished. Very little markets post January has been seen.
Think the spokesman is pretty realistic that this season is right off but if they keep enought subscribers on paramount plus and fix issues like scheduling and what not, hopefully next season numbers improve

Not enough emphasis is placed on what fans need from the football code in this country. Numbers will only trickle down or up but unless the code grabs the public by the balls, it will stay as an also ran that it is.

Barcelona 3-2 vs Sydney Olympic.

I think they were asking how the ratings were.
Short answer, poor.
Didn't make the top 20.
Somewhere less than 310k.

FA/APL are purely to blame, no one else. Postponements, throwing the game into a state of flux. They nearly killed it. Thankfully, there are patient and wealthy businessmen propping up the game.

Depends on what the Paramount subscriber numbers are like today, or at the end of the month or whatever billing cycle they use. If all the Aleague  subscribe's freeze their accounts for the off season and they are only left with 500 subscribers I think they may be beating a hasty retreat out of Australia...  not gonna risk spending billions on AFL to get millions back.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was on a multi channel (10Bold) which means it didnt make the top 20 of the multi channel ratings, and therefore less than 92k

Seems a reasonable way of looking at it.
Of course they can afford to spend the billions the AFL are seeking, but you'd have to think the chances are minimal that they will ever see a return on that sort of spend.
And no way could they keep the monthly suscription rate at a measly $8 or $9 a month.

Yeah mate but if the AFL is  meant to act as a loss leader and they'd hope to piggy back off their immense numbers to then also have more subscribers during the year they will baulk if the realise that all the Aleague crowd "disappear" after the season is done.....

Look, the Final was a train wreck. People can talk up the attendance all they like, but it was horrible. The ratings were clearly an embarrassment.
I'm sick of the bullshit. This was a game involving one club that is only in the competition because of the a deception that should see it expelled and another that ahs never managed to build any commercially sustainable support base.

We're at NSL level attendances and most of football has been of a depressingly low standard. The APL had better have some mammoth sized rabbits to pull out of their hats next season to save this show.

Let's hope that next season the APL stands revealed as the proactive leaders the game desperately needs. Instead of the quivering mice so far revealed.

curious to see how many fans sydney fc will have permanently lost once theyve moved back into the SFS. Hard to see a anymore than a small percentage of those who stopped attending due to Kogarah/COVID etc coming  back on a regular basis

Yet both teams were the best of the lot. Embrace the Champions, chump change. You're sounding like the other bloke.
FA nearly destroyed football by Postponing so many of those matches, even when teams only had 4-5 players out through covid, they asked for a postponement, ALP gave it to them Immediately, to the APL's detriment.
Club saw this, then took advantage and wanted matches postponed regularly because it suited them to play next time, when a team can field all their best players at a later date, by having postponements, even if it meant no content on t.v. for viewers to watch any matches. This Selfish attitude by Team Owners meant that quickly the Ratings plunged further and further, viewers lost track of matches.
The Semis and Grand Final Never really stood a chance for any ratings.
Ameteurs running football had to learn on the run how to Not Destroy the professional football code in Australia.
There was that one occasion though, late in the season where Newcastle Jets wanted a match postponed against Sydney fc but finally, the Apl grew a set and notified them if that happens again, the match will just be abandoned and no points to be earned for the premiership table. No more Postponing for covid bullshit.
Guess what Suddenly happened,,,,, the match was played shock horror!
Therefore, suck shit Jets. You won the match anyway, with Goodwin scoring twice.

FA wasn't the culprit.  It was APL on its own.  I read somewhere the other day that over 50% of games were rescheduled.

I don’t think Covid was ‘bullshit’ as you so eloquently put it, in fact it is still very real and still making many people sick.
