There's probably a fair bit of truth in this.
Fox/Kayo currently in about 30% of households.
Paramount?  I don't know, maybe 5% of households?
Also, Ten is currently almost rock bottom as far as FTA channels go, so for them, it's clearly a make or break decision:  get the AFL at all costs, or pack it in.

The broadcast partners are very happy with the numbers that paramount is getting.

must have set a very low bar in that case, prob due to the other content P+ has that is pretty similar to other options.

“We have talked about it being a great success for Paramount+ class and the A-League fans are really committed. They watch a lot of it.“But it’s been one year, it’s a long deal. They’ve rescheduled 88 games, which meant that we were playing games on a Tuesday not in the venue that we wanted. So it’s been hard. And despite all of that we’ve had a solid start… great on streaming.

I'm not sure what you base that comment on.  Above is the broadcasters view:

I don't know what you expect the broadcaster to say lol. They aren't going to confess to such a significant investment being a complete failure.

I haven't seen any Paramount numbers (as in total subscribers), so it's hard to say one way or the other.
But I would hazard a guess that for the time being, their penetration in the Australian market is a fraction of what Fox/Kayo is.
Now that gap might progressively get smaller in the coming years, but as things stand, we have fewer households who are able to watch live A-League.

There is no data publicly available to us so there is nothing that we can use to come to any conclusions at all other than what the broadcasters say.  They have been right up front in the interview that numbers in front of the paywall are not what they want so why would you assume that they aren't being truthful with their paramount+ statements?

Gyfox, as mentioned what more would you expect a invester to say........
Granted its new but talking APLM only it sure wouldn't be ticking alot of box's but that its starting point was 0 so any subscrition is a + like their logo :)
Instead of backing it up from their own press do your own pub test survey, how many do you know in your circles are subscribers - as for my own I could count on 1 hand amongst many family/friends and fellow team mates who are football followers thats what I base my comment on.
On general discussions with all these people re football and results.

Right now P+ is way down the streaming list.
Hard to find any evidence what the numbers actually are, probably backs up their press for its only words.

One major problem is that there is still no SmartTV app for the major brands. If a person owns a TV that doesn't have the Paramount+ app, they are unlikely to become a subscriber. Many people see getting a Chromecast or other third party work-around as being too much hassle so they just don't bother. A mate of mine watches AL games on the budget Aldi TV he bought for his kid's rumpus room rather than get a chromecast for the far superior Samsung in his living room. Watching on a phone, tablet or computer may be ok for some people, but for many it's unacceptable. This issue alone would eliminate a large portion of potential subscribers.

Yeh, agreed, so it's a double whammy:  brand new service in a crowded market, and a tiny bit more hassle than other established services.

  • I expect that in an interview the broadcaster's representative will tell it like it is which is what McGarvey did in my opinion.  I think it is strange to be accepting what she said in one part of the interview but suggesting that in the rest of the interview she is telling porkies especially as the comments on the two points were made in the same sentence/paragraph in the report.  I can't see why McGarvey would be duplicitous in her responses.  It doesn't serve any purpose.  Their strategy is to grow the FTA market for the A-Leagues and from that generate more subscribers for paramount+.  What in effect she said is that the front of paywall ratings show that they have a lot of work to do to make the deal profitable for them but once they have subscribers they are excellent customers.  I think that last point is typical of the core of football supporters.

My pub test comes with a different answer to yours.  All of my friends who followed the A-League on Fox/Kayo now follow it on paramount+.  Many dropped Foxtel to get Kayo and most have now dropped Kayo.

The rest of your post put simply is that no one really knows the number of subscribers paramount+ has which is what I said previously.

We can make guesses based on trends in the past that FTA data will be higher than PTV and with C10 not even making the top 25 then I think there may be issues.

Latest on Fox subs:  in total, they have risen from 2.9 million in December 2018 to 4.4 million in June 2022, that's the good news for them, the bad news is that the lucrative cable service has declined by some 800,000, and that's where the big margins are.
Anyway, 4.4 million still represents decent penetration in the Australian market.
How many subs would Paramount+ have at any given moment, maybe a few hundred thousand at a guess?
Maybe half of them might watch a bit of A-League, spread across 6 games per week...maybe.
If you want to know why the A-League appears to have all but disappeared from public conscience - you need look no further than the above numbers.
Fox losing the Premier League was the first blow, then the A-League going to Paramount was the 2nd follow-up blow.
There really is no coming back.

For all of us on this board, it's a non issue, we've got access one way or another.
But when you're talking about the general population - it's a real issue.

    I’m just going to ask..

we go on about promotion and relegation and how we should not exclude clubs. But yet the Australian cup is open house and ratings and attendance isn’t that great.

what would change for a regular season match?

Fair question and my only response would be that the sum is greater than the parts. What I mean is, in regards to the Australian Cup games featuring NPL or below teams, do you not feel that their attendance and ratings are vastly superior to any other sport in Australia at the same level? VFL here in Melbourne, state division rugby in QLD/NSW if that is a thing? State cricket, hockey, netball etc etc? Shit mate, attendance at some NPL cup games is better than or equal to the lower end of Aleague matches.....
There are more than 1000 clubs playing football in this country, some with 10 thousand members, some with only 100 but IF ONLY we had a fully integrated pyramid from top to bottom then we could, as a WHOLE SPORT, appeal to these million plus engaged football supporters at the same time.. YES the top tier will get the lions share of interest and the second less so, the third even less and then down to state league in the 100s on match day if lucky.... but they will ALL be football supporters.

If North Geelong FC can get a couple of thousand to watch them get promoted to NPL1 dont you think they would have a much better chance of marketing themselves to the local community, fans, sponsors, broadcasters etc if they were playing, say Adelaide City or APIA, for a chance to play in the Aleague?
The "fish where the fishes are" mantra your pal RC and his cronies pushed for 17 years isnt working. AFL and NRL fans who also casually enjoy "wogball" aren't the answer...... the 1000+ clubs are..... my 2 cents anyway.

    I’m just going to ask..

we go on about promotion and relegation and how we should not exclude clubs. But yet the Australian cup is open house and ratings and attendance isn’t that great.

what would change for a regular season match?

Talking a Cup series that in the big picture doesn't get much exposure compared to normal competition rounds for starters.
Its played during the week, odd times, then on weekends of late.
Even I can't fit making the time many times as a die hard.
We have the divide that lacks synergy for 17yrs, only the die hards will go to the grounds for Cup games, the casuals couldn't give a toss MCG because they don't care about AL who knows what and prefer going to bbq's/fishing/boating/family whatever.
If its disjoyted how can you expect more.
The other codes sure wouldn't have high attendance numbers below their top flight as mentioned as well.

The difference we have though is our game far outnumbers theirs in participation And most football countries have P/R unlike us and battling 2 other codes who get the main focus.
I can only imagine in time IF we had a clear pyrimad and what can develop appeasing to all those numbers in NPL and below.
Just 50% of them will do.
Football people not the casuals/band waggoners < sure they are welcome but you can't rely on them.

MCG can I ask you this - being a melbonite we're/are you a invested afl supporter first before AL/MC ? and currently ?
Did you grow up with real football first or visa versa ?
