Dumb question but did I read both Saturday nights games just gone were on at the same time? (Was out on the beers.)

If so why?

Fair enough viewpoint by Mono, I don't think anyone can argue with the fact that old soccer was marginalised, even destroyed, so that something new could emerge with wider appeal, and that meant a closed shop league appealing to generic whitebread supporters.  Foreign owners, many of them anonymous, most probably from nations not exactly friendly to Australia now control the league.  You have to be honest, it's quite extraordinary that it has come to this.

After 8 consecutive years of declining attendances and ratings, the only comfort is that we are probably at rock bottom right now.

A bit of a dead cat bounce next season is possible.

No this is not rock bottom. It can get worse and probably will. The question is the will of the clubs to save themselves, because the only way out of this is that expenditure the like of which the clubs have never contemplated before.  I don't see that happening.

Avoid games during the day in 40 degree heat, that's why.

Did they not even air the Saturday matches at all?
On another note, the Formula 1 dominated the sports ratings on Sunday (on Saturday it got beaten out by AFL). However, its future on Channel 10 is uncertain since this is the last year of the broadcast deal and if they do end up losing it, most likely to channels 7 or 9, it would mean that football is their sole offering for sport on their main channel (they have select NBL matches and eSports on 10 Peach though)

Paramount, which owns Network Ten, has not only launched in this market, but bought equity in the A-League as part of a $200 million rights deal acquired last year. Globally, Paramount’s focus is sport and news. It is also expected to bid aggressively for the AFL rights.

https://tvblackbox.com.au/page/2022/04/19/foxtel-and-kayo-increase-audiences-for-live-sport-as-viewers-move-away-from-free-to-air-tv/

FOXTEL and KAYO increase audiences for live sport as viewers move away from Free-To-Air TV

The return of Formula 1 racing to Melbourne after a three-year hiatus has proven to be a ratings blockbuster for the Foxtel Group.

Data obtained by TV Blackbox reveals that the 2022 Australian Grand Prix broadcast has set a new record for Formula 1 viewership on subscription TV in Australia.

The strong start to the winter sports season on Foxtel and Kayo has also been seen across Australia’s two key football codes.

During Sunday’s Melbourne Grand Prix, Foxtel and Kayo had more than 1.2m subscribers concurrently watching sports at 4.29 pm (all Fox Sports, ESPN, beIN and Sky Racing).

While Channel 9 free-to-air ratings for this year’s NRL season (Rounds 1-5) are down 15% compared with last year, the Foxtel Group appear to be going against the trend recording audience figures up 14% year on year, with an average audience of 425,000. This comes after a 17% growth across the platforms of Foxtel and Kayo in 2020.

It’s a similar story with the AFL where the first four rounds of football have seen Channel 7 audiences decline by 8% compared with last year while Foxtel/Kayo audiences are so far up 19% year on year, with an average audience of 313,000, following 29% growth in 2020.

Interesting so Foxtel has improved on their market share AFTER dumping the Aleague(s)?

Kayo audiences are getting close to 1:1 parity with traditional STB ratings, and growing.

It would have been great if Fox had been able to hold onto both the Premier League and the A-League, but once they lost the Premier League, A-League ratings took a nose dive, so I'm guessing there was no value in keeping just it on its own.

IF P get AFL we know where the focus will end up.

Broadcasters don't like empty seats & empty stadia which the A League has too much off regardless of the spin & regardless of what they paid for it & regardless of what equity they hold in it.    I despise eggball in all forms however people attend it & it rates well & football does not. Simple as that.

By the way can confirm others do know of P+, my fellow team mates that a few are AL/APL followers have P+, so that adds up the subscription numbers lol......

Interesting business story on ABC National this morning.
Netflix has had a decrease in subscribers for the first time in a decade (across the globe I think that is).
A number of reasons why that's happened, but one thing they mentioned is the proliferation of streaming services, there are now stacks of them, and the presenter named 8 of them, seemingly off the top of his head.
But do you reckon he mentioned the newest one now operating in Australia?
Of course not.
Now that's an isolated story, but I think it's indicative of the uphill battle both Paramount and the A-League has, it's a new service, it's dirt cheap, Australian turnover is going to be pretty small, and as a general rule, whatever the FTA numbers are, the people watching as subscribers are going to be a fraction.
The key issue for the A-League is that this must impact on sponsorship revenue, because for the most part, that sponsorship revenue is directly related to viewers.
The one upside for Paramount is that live sport differentiates them from other streaming services.
If you only offer movies and TV series, after a while, you get bored with the offering and you just unsubscribe, even with Netflix, which has a huge range, it's pretty easy to get bored seeing the same crap pop up over and over.  Live sport is different, each live event is a unique event (if you are interested in that sport).

One of the key factors in getting a foothold in a new marketplace is simply being first...or if not first, then early, and with a better product.

Uber was first, now it owns the ride sharing space. Kayo was first for sports streaming, now its king. Unless P+ can demonstrate that its product is not only different, but superior, it will always be a poor cousin to the big boys.

Same with the ALeague in many respects.

That was reported at the time.
But I wonder:
 - maybe it was more like a one year moratorium, or something similar
 - would the AFLW be included?
 - maybe the exclusion clause was just live coverage?
 - or maybe the exclusion clause was about exclusivity, so they might be able to buy one or two games per round, or maybe they just gave an assurance that no other sport would command more hours than the A-League?  so anything under 12 hours per week is acceptable

The interesting thing is the A League philosophy has always been about exclusivity. "Watch me dive, mum". Clean air, main channel, nothing else on, its own streaming service, etc...

Sport has changed since the time football was trying to become popular and it has now made itself inaccessible and irrelevant

People are duel sports followers and sport is just a part of entertainment / social connection. Its a buffet now and getting traction is about being part of something instead of being all of something

Everything football has done over the last few years has been a miscalculation. Its the biggest problem with people who start with the answer instead of the problem. Imagine if response teams tried controlling the Covid pandemic with nothing more than face masks on public transport just because health officials were crying out for that in 2020. Unheard of

Start with the data and work your way to the answer. We were best placed on Foxtel and SBS but it wasnt the answer / result people wanted

The Foxtel/SBS arrangement was bloody good, near perfect.
It was the then FFA CEO who destroyed the SBS part of it - we've never seen ratings like we saw during the SBS years, not even close.
In fact the way the then FFA CEO managed that relationship, inexplicably destroying it midway through what had been some sensational ratings, you have to wonder whether it was an act of intentional sabotage.

P+ got CL/Europa from this season on FYI from Optus BUT Optus knew whats the key - kept the EPL, thank goodness for that for it works so damn good.

P+ offers nothing diff in general compared to all the other offerings, thats its issue.
Netflix/Stan/Kayo etc how many accounts do you need, thats the prob and its getting worse.
I only just did the quick 7day free on P+ to watch the FACup semi - once the Final is played out I'll opt out.

FOX - SBS was perfect.

so many plonkers on this site howled and howled for those contracts to be torn up bc they believed somehow there were millions of secret football fans out there who couldn't find SBS on their remote. Funny, they'd been finding SBS on their remotes for 40 years.
