It occurs to me that in the A-League's 18 year history, if you were to pick the one comp which has grown in that time above all others, you'd have to say it's the NRL.

Not if attendance is your yardstick. 2022 was virtually identical to 2005 in terms of aggregate attendance: roughly 3.3m.

Same goes for AFL: roughly 6.75m in both 2005 and 2022.

In both cases there were somewhat more matches in 2022 than 2005, so average has actually gone down (but obviously it has fluctuated from year to year, and 2022 probably had some residual Covid effects).

Super Rugby attendances are much harder to track, but my sense is they are way down from what they were back then (but there were also only three Australian.based teams in 2005).

A-League rose from 1m in 05-06 (with 90 games), peaking at around 1.8m in the mid 2010s (with 140 games). This year is averaging 7.5k per game, so on course for about 1.25m inc. finals (with 163 games).

Next year may see some latent attendance improvement with the effects of the WWC and Perth, Brisbane and WU having more stable stadium situations.

But to really return to good health with 10k+ averages, the following is probably required:

- Sydney, Victory and Wanderers to be good on the park
- Newcastle's ownership situation to be resolved
- Macarthur and Brisbane to be bought out by new owners, since their current ones are atrocious and actively putting off fans
- Victory to repair their relationship with their fanbase (while still keeping out the dickheads)
- APL to replace DT with a new CEO and revisit the grand final decision (may be a mutual termination if this year's GF is an attendance debacle)
- Paramount to fix their platform issues (e.g. pause/rewind) and 10 to work on promoting the competition

Needless to say I'm not confident any of these will actually happen.

It was on the main channel, the top 20 cut out at 212k.
Nothing from Ten made the top 20 last night.
The main channel's audience percentage for the night was abysmal at a fraction above 5%.

i still don't know why people are so obsessed with TV ratings. I watched the game on 10Play. Who watches FTA anymore? I have TV’s at home not connected to FTA aerials. No need.

Ten's share of the total audience that night was 5%.
It's an abysmal number, and there's no way known Paramount is making up the difference.
Also, while the NRL is getting massive FTA and Fox numbers, it's still getting massive streaming numbers as well (but those streaming numbers might only be 60% of the Fox numbers).
In conclusion, it adds up to very few eyeballs on that socceroos game, whichever way you want to slice or dice it.

Firstly, I would not say that rugby is more popular in Australia than soccer.
Secondly, well, I think on occasion, a few do need reminding, but that aside, I've been hearing for at least 5 years now, perhaps longer, than soccer's fans are more inclined to use streaming than the other football codes, and I would conclude that that might be true in proportionate terms, i.e. a slightly bigger percentage of what is a relative smallish TV audience will use streaming to watch soccer when compared to the proportion doing the same in relation to the NRL and the AFL.  So maybe 70% of a smallish TV audience is doing it compared to 60% of a very large TV audience (i.e. NRL and AFL).

Haven't Foxtel been caught fiddling the ratings figures for their NRL/AFL broadcasts (by double-counting estimates)?

There have been recent reports to that effect.
Similar to OZTAM ratings, there's potential for some double counting.

Firstly, really?
I am talking form attendance/tv rating perspective ie. the point of the thread/your posts.
Bearing in mind I'm from SA so when I say rugby I mean all it's incarnations.

Secondly, why do you relish reminding everyone soccer is small fry on a soccer forum?

Gleefully making the point over and over again is what confounds me not the actual facts

It's still a good thing. With that and Optus Sport makes life a lot easier if you have the 3 of them.

Starting to think this whole ratings thing is BS.

Of course it is. Think about it. Ratings are derived from 5,250 households nationwide. That's it. Our population is 26m. Oztam will tell you that they get a good cross section of the community, but that's not possible. Those 5250 households are people that answered "yes" to the question "do you mind if we collect all of your TV viewing habits without any meaningful compensation?". Apparently there is some points system where they can redeem for gifts, but we all know what those systems are like. Just think about who that cross section of the community actually is.

TBF though mate, that same cross section of the community tends to wake up in the middle of the night to watch the Socceroos.....

They already have the broadcast rights for the UCL in the States. Maybe when the Stan deal is up it could switch over.

The actual eyeball numbers aren't great but from a low base the percentage growth is encouraging.
