He should leave just before we play City next then come back after.

I think he is developing so well it would only be for the money that he would go elsewhere - which is such a key feature of the limited professional footballer's career.

A lot of his current success is because of how City are playing, and how they all know each others' game and roles.

Stay in the team environment he is in now and he can get even sharper. Go to another team and he risks not meshing so well or being an isolated striker and more likely to fail or go backwards. Three or four games with a poor return OS and he will be sitting on the pine or out. Could he produce immediately in a new team?

When I wear their colours, I am the club.

The world is still a bit of a mess. Why would you leave Aus now?

I’d like to see him have a go at a higher level but I’d be in no rush until things are closer to normal. Playing in front of big crowds and enjoying the local lifestyle are important factors too.

Only if he gets played probably at a club overseas. Darmstadt were terrible with him. His podcast interview showed just how poor Frings was as a tactician and Schuster came back to Darmstadt recruiting his local favourites.

Hes probably been payed well too, at this stage after his early attempt for European football not sure if he wants another crack maybe somewhere in Asia instead?

But other than that he's at a great place with Melbourne City whom have a great set up and going places.

Pretty sure he's stated he doesn't wanna head back overseas. It’s pretty synonymous with the younger generation nowadays who can’t tough it out overseas.

He' 27 now and peak years, whats the point in this current global times.
He'd be on good money and probably more come re contract time he keeps up this form.
Great life style, covid free, might as well grab all you can here BUT an offer from Japan or KL would be worth considering IF it occured.

City is a good team and I think that makes him look better than he possibly is.

if he was playing for Newcastle MV or Perth I can't see him scoring so many.

The team provides the football and if it's good enough and chances are created half decent strikers will score, generally.

if the football is not providing chances, then goals dry up somewhat no matter how good the front man is.

Selfishly I want him to stay but he's far too good to be in the A-League.

If he were to go overseas, he needs to go to a club that suits his style of play.

No. Stay here be a big fish in a small pond. However, If he were to leave, Asia would probably be a better move for him both financially and on the pitch.

Not good enough for Europe.

Haha whatever grandpa. Jmac must be a wimp! 😂 Jmac has played in Europe. Scored a treble for Hibs v Rangers. Asian football standards are getting gradually higher. Playing in Europe isn’t everything these days- even for an established player. Just ask Aaron Mooy who chose to leave the top league in world football

Of course he can.
But i don't think he is that great outside of Australia.
Harsh for someone who scores goals for fun but thats because most of his goal are on a platter for him and doesn;t have to do much.
If he went overseas and had to come up against better defences and had to rely on his own ability he will fail.

It’s probably better for Aus football if he stays. We haven’t had a dominant long serving Aussie striker in the league since Archie, and he was a name that was extremely well-known in the Australian public and good for the visibility of Australian football. We don’t have many long serving A-League players for one club at all, let alone dominant players who play for the Socceroos and score goals for fun. We need more of that. It creates continuity and reinforces support. We want people getting Melbourne City shirts with Maclaren on the back.

If he goes to the 2. Bundesliga or the SPFL then no one in Australia will know about him and he’s unlikely to be as successful as he is here. For the benefit of the A-League he should stay here.

Exactly, we need to learn on how to market the best players in the A-League, especially if they are Aussies.

well, for me its about the benefit of our players "improving" and playing against better defense's or attacks.
Not going to happen staying here in the big picture short terms.
Maybe one day the AL will be a great level but whilst it lags behind our close by Asian neighbours for one let alone euro comps ALL our promising players need to experience and show their wares against stronger Teams period.
Sorry some may think otherwise but thats my pov and I'm sure I'm not alone.
Good on him or anyone who can be a big fish in the small pond and reap the benefits, lets see when given the chance in the NT IF they can still be the big fish like Cahill proved for one eg......

Will be an interesting test of where he's at this weekend against the Roar's defence. Disappointing that we (Roar) will be below strength.

I wouldn't judge McLaren if he gets zip on one game.
22 goals over 19games great average to date, just 5 under your GF.

Not good enough for overseas, the A-League is his level. If he were to depart, he'd be back within 12 months in all likelihood. He seems to be smart enough to know he's not going to crack it abroad after multiple failed moves now, so I imagine he'll remain in the A-League as a well paid marksman.
