Goal scorers under Arnie's 26 games in charge:

McLaren 8 (2 pens)
Souttar 6
Duke 5
Mabil 5
Irvine 4
Leckie 4
Boyle 3
Hrustic 3
Taggart 3
Mooy 2
Rogic 2
8 single goal scorers

Granted that a lot of those goals were against very weak opposition, but still interesting to see who actually has put the ball in the net for us.

Sure with losses to a ricochet and non-pen against the World Champions, yeah, and Denmark one if the not highest-rated Europeans going in to the tournament, yeah?

There's nothing to fear from Peru.  Respect.  But not fear.

Keep coming up with the excuses and you wonder why we can't finish in the top two rankings in consecutive Asian WCQ. Denmark was rated as the seventh highest European country going into WC 2018...

I remember before the world cup in Russia we got excited that Guerroro might not go but he went anyway and we got pumped, it will be very tough game and we need alot of luck.

Australia is going to need a miracle to beat Peru, personally I don’t think the Socceroos have any chance, the only way I see Peru slipping up is if they take the Socceroos too easily and walk into the game thinking they have already won.

I’m predicting Peru to win 3-0.

Arnold needs to learn something. All our best players (Hrustic, Boyle, Mooy, Irvine) were overseas based and our worst (Atkinson, Goodwin. Leckie etc) were A league. Karacic needs to come in for Atkinson, Mcgree for Goodwin and I’d take Wright over Rowles any day. Rowles has a couple caps, a few more in the A league and has never played in anything like the Peru game, whereas Wright has considerable experience in the Championship and will be used to high pace, high stakes encounters.

The good news is Behich played Ok so that answers the left back question.

Ryan
Karacic Wright Sainsbury Behich
Boyle Mooy Irvine Mcgree
Hrustic
Taggart (or Mclaren if Taggart is injured)

Wright has been an abomination, he has made about 8 major mistakes in just 2 games.
2 of Sainsbury, Degenek or Rowles should start and Wright should never play for australia again.

What a pathetic fatalistic attitude, as if we’re coming up against Giants of South American football like Argentina or Brazil. Hopefully Arnie can instill some confidence in the boys rather this constant pandering and self flagellating, otherwise we will go down 3-0.

Peru are entirely beatable. They are deserving favourites but we have no reason to fear them. If we play well we have a chance.

I would play a 5-3-2 against Peru with Behich and Atkinson used as wingbacks. At least for the first half. Then make a tactical substitution at half-time, hopefully with scores still at 0-0, to bring the game home.

I think Karacic should play instead of Atkinson who had a poor game.
If Sainsbury is fit he should start ahead of Wright alongside Rowles
If Taggart is fit he should start up front, perhaps Leckie should move to the left instead of Goodwin.
Apart from that the same team should play.

I would pretty much agree with those changes.

Rubbish. He was solid against UAE, got dragged out wide a few times but where was the fukn fullback? Degenek cant even get a game in the MLS and there’s probably a dozen or so central defenders better than Rowles in the A league. Wright is CLEARLY playing at the highest level with CLEARLY the most experience.

Mcgree has to start. He was on the verge of playing EPL and has good technique. He’s the one player we have who can retain the ball and turn in tight spaces, unlike turnover merchant Leckie with his elephant touch. Goodwin like so so many A league journeyman just cant rise to this level. Risdon, Zullo, Grant, Nabbout, Franjic, remember them? The creme de la creme of the A league , absolute spaf when it comes to international football. Goodwin is the same.

Hard to believe that the last match the Socceroos played against non-Asian opposition was against Peru in 2018, and here we are again!

One for the stats nerds like me. So far in Arnie's tenure he's played 26 games - 19 WCQ, 5 Asian Cup games and 2 friendlies for a record of 16W, 4D, 6L (GF 53, GA 18). If you look at our record against half decent opposition (which I'm basing off current FIFA ranking of 70 or less) we are 1W, 1D, 5L (GF 3, GA 8) - 2 of those 3 GF being in the game against UAE overnight! Against weak opposition (outside top 70 in rankings), we are 15W, 3D, 1L (GF 50, GA 10). Average FIFA ranking of our opponents throughout those 26 games is 91. For reference, our current ranking is 42 and Peru are 22 (ahead of Serbia, Poland, Czech Republic).

FIFA Rankings seem to be a bit arbitrary though.
These clubs are all ranked higher than Australia yet failed to qualify.
  • Italy (6)
  • Colombia (17)
  • Sweden (19)
  • Ukraine (27)
  • Chile (28)
  • Nigeria (30)
  • Egypt (32)
  • Scotland (39)
Let's just hope Peru (22) falls into the above category.

I believe so. He picked up a yellow against China in September. Arnold commented on May 30

“Additionally, with several players set to enter the UAE match on yellow cards, we needed to ensure that we have cover in every area to ensure we’re not caught short at any time.”

But he picked up an earlier yellow and was suspended for Vietnam, so he was not on a yellow heading into this one.

Dang, I just did some googling and past precedent is that WCQ yellow cards often get wiped before ICP and similar, but only if a federation requests it from FIFA and FIFA agree. Which suggests the rules are that they don't get wiped! We are so fucked if Hrustic is out, I assumed he would not be because the commentators did not mention it at the time.

I think Peru has a better team right now , its pretty much the same coach  from the last world cup , same but more mature players and as a team they know what they are doing on the field.  You have to look at the last 2 copa americas where peru finish fourth and second place.  2 consecutive world cup qualifiers with the same coach and team. The only player missing is Guerrero but many could argue that Lapadula fits this team better than Guerrero

Peru's strengh in the past 8 years has been the way they play as a team , the precise passing, quick counters and strong defense , as a unit. Although they have 3 very good players at front, cueva ( brazilerao experience) , carrillo ( premier league experience)  and lapadula ( serie 1 experience) , all still in their early 30s . Dont just look at the teams they play for , cueva could easily be playing for any top league in europe , same as carrillo , but money is a factor . Lapadula , although in serie B now, was a player for Milan a few years ago , played a few years in serie A and he was called up for the italian mens national team for some friendlies not so long ago , so he is not just any serie B forward.

I do not think this will be an easy game for peru after watching new zealands game against Peru. If Australia tries to control the ball and play in peru's half , it will probably end up badly for australia , as peru is one of the best teams for counter attacks, this is how they survived south american qualifiers against "better" teams ( on paper) , their effectivenes on counter attacks is unreal , they can create 2 or 3 chances per game and scored 2 goals.  However , if australia waits in their half and plays smart like they did today against UEA , i think they may have a chance. Peru's team is good defending in their half when the opposition is dominating the game, however they are not as good when the opposition counters them, they play with 1 true defendive midfielder, trauco on the left is weak . New zealand is a great example, Peru dominated the whole game but they created 1 or 2 chances the whole game, which is about the same new zealand created . The weak point of new zealand is that they are horrible doing long passes and they loose the ball very easily, in contrast australia has a much superior passing game ( long and short balls) .

As a team I think Peru is better than australia right now , as a matter of fact I think the australian team they faced in the last world cup was stronger. However Peru has weaknesses in the back and they can break in mentally if they are loosing the game . They tend to do better against teams that are better on paper , where they work as a unit and g et the job done, but they have struggle against teams that are easier on paper , because they are not used to playing in the opponents half , they are not good at creating chances when they play in the opponents half , thats not their game , which is what I think Australia may do .

I personally see this game even with the right game plan

Sounds like a problem. But Hrustic or not, the players need to put in the best shift of their lives on Monday. We are not favourites, but if we play to our best and get some luck coming our way - we might make it. Let's go roos !!!

Thats why I thought BVM would of been good, he could set us up very well to defends deep in 1st half and try to spring counters in the 2nd and frustrate them into mistakes.

We need to make it so they are struggling to break us down in our own half Mourinho style and pray for some luck.

So solid that 6 football sites rated him below a 6.5 over 2 games. Only one site had him ahead of Rowles.
Looking at advanced stats, the second worst performer on the team over the 2 games.
they stated before the game that if Sainsbury was fit, Wright would be the cb on the bench.
Arnie may start Wright vs peru because he always picks match minutes over talent but we shall see.

LOL you and your "football sites". Fox Sports had Wright ahead of Rowles. Rowles isn't "talented", not in the sense that he should be thrown into a do or die WCQ against South America's 5th best side, not when you're resume only shows a handful of caps and the A league. No way I'd risk a child against at this level. He should go to Europe first and prove he can do it in Europe before claiming the centre back spot over someone who has in Wright. Rowles is a garden variety A league centre back, whose flaws will probably be brutally exposed against half decent opposition. He's not good or prodigious enough to replace someone who has tons of experience at a fairly high level. Remember Wilkinson when he went from A league superstar to Socceroos flop at 2014? Let's not make the same fuck up with Rowles. You trippin' bro.

‘Football sites’ and then you refer to fox sports having Wright over rowles…. Like I said 1 site had wright over rowles. 5 others the opposite.
Once again, Arnie stated if Sainsburys knee was ok, wright would not be playing because both are right sided cbs.

With Taggart going home surely Leckie can’t start v Peru as striker?! Has to be Jmac cos he looked ok v Uae with decent shot on target at least.

‘Football sites’ and then you refer to fox sports having Wright over rowles…. Like I said 1 site had wright over rowles. 5 others the opposite.
Once again, Arnie stated if Sainsburys knee was ok, wright would not be playing because both are right sided cbs.

Lol then you suggest Degenek who is also right sided. Centre backs can usually alternate between the two sides its not a big deal lol. You need to get over your Rowles wet dream, he's plays in the A league for gods sake. Lacing up the boots against Perth Glory isn't the same as facing South America's fifth best in a do or die. Im no Wright fanboi, but he's the best and most experienced we have (other than Sains) in that position.

With Taggart going home surely Leckie can’t start v Peru as striker?! Has to be Jmac cos he looked ok v Uae with decent shot on target at least.
wonder if Arnold wishes he included Cummings now

could we call in another striker? or is it too late
