Sweden lost 3 matches out of 8 to reach the playoffs, if they had got through via the playoffs they would have then lost 3 out of 10 (30%). Australia lost 3 out of 10 in the group, then won two more matches in playoffs so overall lost 3 out of 12 (25%). And this doesn't count the 8 matches they played in the earlier round, so overall they lost 3 out of 20.

How does your mate's logic stack up now?

Valid point ;)

But I'm not sure he thinks Sweden deserved to be there, either.

Meh.  Even Macedonia did that.

If Iran rolls the US-after what their players are going through-then your argument is done.  Even if they draw actually.

Not really. And none of this ever really gets done and dusted. The game continues and there's another WC in four years. Going by the last few tournaments. Their respective Asia/North America results at the World Cup are comparable.

Japan makes it to the Round of 16 every second World Cup roughly. Back in 2002, South Korea made it all the way to the semi-finals. Since then, they've made the group stage once. And that's it.

With North America, Mexico always makes it to the Round of 16 and gets eliminated there. The USMNT made it to the Round of 16 of 2010 and 2014 (before not qualifying at all for 2018). Costa Rica made the quarter-finals in 2014.

Would you agree that that suggests the respective results are comparable?

Well, the difference is that Asia gets an extra spot.

But I do hope that Iran beat US. It was fantastic to watch them get the two late goals against Wales. And no complaints Iran, Japan and Korea manage to push the ledger in our favour a bit (although I would also like to see Canada do well).

If Sweden won their playoffs do you think he would think that Sweden deserved to be there? After all, they did beat Spain in one game.

Probably. Well, if I were a Swede, I would probably think so.

I think the key thing is that, not only did we lose 3 games, we drew 3 games. We won 4, lost 3 and drew 3. When you consider some of the matches were dropping points in, I think our pathway to the WC is considerably less difficult than other nations.

Iran 2 wales 0

so far afc has 3 wins and a draw and 3 losses from 7 games.

not too shabby

So far the teams that qualified through the AFC (rather than as host) have played 6 for 3 wins, a draw and 2 losses.  Meanwhile CONCACAF have 2 draws and 2 losses from 4 games and are favourites to lose their next 3 games England/USA, Japan/Costa Rica, Argentina/Mexico

last 'good' WC game we played was again Serbia in 2010

however I'd say the 2-3 against Holland was also not a bad match in 2014

every game since then has been garbage i dont think we scored a single goal in open play in Russia - i think when it comes down too it we 'over' rate Australia as fans of the nation

We did very well against France in Russia. Definitely did not deserve to lose and Mooy was the BBC's MOTM.

You're free to disagree. I think you want to believe that Asia is harder than North America but logic makes it hard to accept.

Why do I think that? Because that's how I feel, myself. I wish I could believe that our qualification pathway is tougher. Or better yet, to believe that AND for us to be one of the top two teams in the confederation.

Having said that, the Iranians are giving every fibre of their beings to fight to stay in this. Maybe at some point, we'll be able to say, hand on heart, that Asia is tougher than North America.

I've always been something of a contrarian. Sorry

Well obviously conmebol is the shittiest confederation. Brazil has qualified every single time through them. If the had to qualify through OFC, I posit that they would have failed at least once. Therefore conmebol is the weakest confederation and ofc the strongest. Logically sound (ish), but also obviously bullshit. I don't think the difficulty of qualifying is much related to the strength of the confederation as a whole.

Now Socceroos  have beaten Tunisia 1-0,  it means 4 out of 5 Asian teams, who qualified (Qatar didn't as host), have won games  at this WC.  They've defeated a South American powerhouse, a UEFA powerhouse,  a decent African team and a decent UEFA team.

Surely the Asian naysayers and Eurosnobs, can see that Asia is improving relative to other federations  given performances in the Qatar WC 2022?

Its interesting: this is more or less a WC in Asia.  The Asian Confed nations are more at home with the conditions, but most imprtantle are willing to take it to the opposition, and the refs are not giving the 50-50 calls to the Europeans or Sth Americans.

It probably helps that Qatar is  culturally familiar  to Asian teams and it is a bit unfamiliar to some of the other federations.

I recall reading  when we were first  admitted to the Asian Confed how culturally many Aussie players struggled to cope with different Asian  customs.

One phenomenon we should probably acknowledge is having had a pretty tough WCQing group by Asian standards has been good long term. It forced us to play another tough Asian Confed knockout game against the UAE, and, then Peru in an intercontinental fixture.

Japan outclassed us at home. Saudi were the better team over the two legs. China forced a draw. I think  Oman forced a draw  too?

Australia may have played more WCQers to get to Qatar than anybody else. It has certainly created a battle hardened team, tactically savvy team, mentally tough team, who've won some very close, tight encounters.

We've only been thrashed by the current world champs, France.

Japans first half was languid and lacked energy. I think they really underestimated costa rica. Their second half was better, and if they played that way for 90 minutes the cumulative pressure would probably be too muchand they probably score at least a couple. In the end costa rica only needed one chance all game to (probably) knock japan out of the world cup

costa rica have won just 3 of their last 18 world cup games despite making the quarters. They are pretty similar quality to australia over the last dozen years by that metric
