+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xBut the Saudi and Japan wins are encouraging, to say the least. I don't think qualifying through Asia is by any means easy. But I think it hasn't been as difficult as the other confederations (including North America, arguably). You must be joking. Nope. Historically Mexico > Korea USMNT = Japan (similar level and similar results at WC) Costa Rica > Australia Canada < Saudi Arabia/Iran What's changed? Saudi Arabia has become better. But, technically, Canada is even better than Saudi Arabia. Then, remind me, which confederation gets fewer spots at the WC; Asia or North America? Japan beat USA in a friendly last month... But are drawing way too many conclusions when comparing these teams together just to prove your point. That's hilarious. Everybody here is drawing conclusions from extremely limited datasets. What we do know...North America gets one less qualifying spot than Asia. So, for Asia to be better, it has to be quite a bit better. And yet, in the last twenty years, have Asian teams outperformed North American teams at the World Cup? Quite the opposite, in fact. What's hilarious? You just making things up just to prove whatever point you have that North America is better based on what now spot allocation in Asia? I don't know how North America got in here where its about Asia is underestimated at this level especially now but keep on harping about them. Either you dont rate the level of Asian football or you dont show the respect it deserves based on your previous posts about Asian football too, this is boring... To be clear, I don't think Asia is "rubbish". Or rather, I think that Japan and Korea have players of real quality (equivalent to Poland, Sweden, for example). I think Saudi Arabia might well get there, too (how many swallows does a summer make?). However, that's the ceiling in quality. All in all, I do rate Asian football (or football in parts of Asia). But I also think that a lot of folks on this forum delude themselves on how tough qualifying through Asia is in comparison to other federations. A Swedish mate of mine was pointing out to me that, if you can lose three matches during the qualification process and still qualify for the World Cup, it's not exactly a difficult route the WC. And that's not forgetting that we drew three matches, too (against Oman, China and Saudi Arabia). Sweden lost 3 matches out of 8 to reach the playoffs, if they had got through via the playoffs they would have then lost 3 out of 10 (30%). Australia lost 3 out of 10 in the group, then won two more matches in playoffs so overall lost 3 out of 12 (25%). And this doesn't count the 8 matches they played in the earlier round, so overall they lost 3 out of 20. How does your mate's logic stack up now? Valid point ;) But I'm not sure he thinks Sweden deserved to be there, either.

The teams Poland finished ahead of were world powerhouses Andorra, San Marino, Albania and Hungary.... Yep. So... England (potential WC winners) go through Poland and Sweden end up playing each other in a play-off. One goes through. Meanwhile, in Asia, Saudi Arabia and Japan (roughly the same level as Poland and Sweden) go through. We go to the repechage (like Sweden and Poland). AFC is much less difficult than UEFA. Nah. Japan > Poland and Sweden. You might have heard Japan beat Germany at the WC. Aus had to first beat UAE,to play the repecharge against Peru. Poland had to finish above shyte like Andorra, San Marion, Albania and even Hungary to play Sweden in the repecharge.. Whoopdedo. On the other hand, Sweden beat Spain in the qualifiers. And last set of qualifiers they beat Italy.Japan is about the same level as Sweden and Poland,. Meh. Even Macedonia did that. +x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+x+xBut the Saudi and Japan wins are encouraging, to say the least. I don't think qualifying through Asia is by any means easy. Either you dont rate the level of Asian football or you dont show the respect it deserves based on your previous posts about Asian football too, this is boring... What have I made up? On this forum, you often read that North America is a terrible confederation and it's piss easy to get the WC through North America. Meanwhile, you also read that Asia is an underrated confederation. And that qualifying through Asia is relatively difficult (relative to what? Not compared to other federations?) I guess it depends on what we mean by underrated? Do we mean: (a) Asian teams aren't a pushover and they have players of the quality needed to beat Germany/Italy/Argentina/Brazil?? or (b) that, in comparison to other confederations, qualifying though Asia is difficult?? I agree with (a). But I disagree with (b) based on how tough the European and South American routes respectively are. I would say Africa is more brutal qualification pathway. And that Asia isn't harder (or stronger) than North America. It has been about par, so far. But now North America has potentially become even stronger (and therefore more difficult) than Asia. Therefore, relative to other confederations, qualifying though Asia isn't especially difficult. I think you're objectively wrong. Qualifying through Asia is obviously much tougher than North America and it's not even close. There are more games, more travel (over vast distances) and a larger number of competitive opponents. In CONCACAF, there's Mexico and US, and then there's daylight. Costa Rica has its moments and Canada seems to be in the midst of a golden generation, but generally the standard is shocking. Of course Asia is far behind South America and Europe, but it's probably close to par with Africa and definitely far ahead of North America. Telling your interlocutor that they're objectively wrong doesn't actually make them objectively wrong. The fact is that, since Korea 2002, Asian teams have achieved less at the WC than North American teams despite having one more spot. Despite your assertion that Costa Rica are rubbish, just two WCs ago, they finished top in a group of Italy, England and Uruguay. Can you imagine this forum if Australia ever managed that? That team made it to the quarter-finals where they lost to the Dutch on penalties. So we have Costa Rica (mediocre now but they'll be back) + USMNT + Canada + Mexico all competing for one less place than Asia gets. And still you reckon that "Asia is obviously much tougher than North America"? Pull the other one, it's got bells on it. Yeah, I completely disagree, but whatever. Your arguments are too disingenuous to waste any more time on. Feels like you’re just arguing for its own sake. You're free to disagree. I think you want to believe that Asia is harder than North America but logic makes it hard to accept. Why do I think that? Because that's how I feel, myself. I wish I could believe that our qualification pathway is tougher. Or better yet, to believe that AND for us to be one of the top two teams in the confederation. Having said that, the Iranians are giving every fibre of their beings to fight to stay in this. Maybe at some point, we'll be able to say, hand on heart, that Asia is tougher than North America. I've always been something of a contrarian. Sorry If Iran rolls the US-after what their players are going through-then your argument is done. Even if they draw actually. Not really. And none of this ever really gets done and dusted. The game continues and there's another WC in four years. Going by the last few tournaments. Their respective Asia/North America results at the World Cup are comparable. Japan makes it to the Round of 16 every second World Cup roughly. Back in 2002, South Korea made it all the way to the semi-finals. Since then, they've made the group stage once. And that's it. With North America, Mexico always makes it to the Round of 16 and gets eliminated there. The USMNT made it to the Round of 16 of 2010 and 2014 (before not qualifying at all for 2018). Costa Rica made the quarter-finals in 2014. Would you agree that that suggests the respective results are comparable?
Well, the difference is that Asia gets an extra spot. But I do hope that Iran beat US. It was fantastic to watch them get the two late goals against Wales. And no complaints Iran, Japan and Korea manage to push the ledger in our favour a bit (although I would also like to see Canada do well).

We won 4, lost 3 and drew 3. When you consider some of the matches were dropping points in, I think our pathway to the WC is considerably less difficult than other nations.

+xIran 2 wales 0 so far afc has 3 wins and a draw and 3 losses from 7 games. not too shabby So far the teams that qualified through the AFC (rather than as host) have played 6 for 3 wins, a draw and 2 losses. Meanwhile CONCACAF have 2 draws and 2 losses from 4 games and are favourites to lose their next 3 games England/USA, Japan/Costa Rica, Argentina/Mexico

So is it Australia's fault the quality of Asia is behind Europe, Australia can only play what's in front of them. Of course not. But when we struggle to qualify through the AFC, it suggests the quality of our NT is mediocre. And, imo, it's just silly to go about making excuses about it being difficult to qualify through Asia. We beat Peru.... We did. But we still struggle to qualify through Asia. We haven't put up a semi-decent showing since the WC in South Africa. last 'good' WC game we played was again Serbia in 2010 however I'd say the 2-3 against Holland was also not a bad match in 2014 every game since then has been garbage i dont think we scored a single goal in open play in Russia - i think when it comes down too it we 'over' rate Australia as fans of the nation We did very well against France in Russia. Definitely did not deserve to lose and Mooy was the BBC's MOTM.

If the had to qualify through OFC, I posit that they would have failed at least once. Therefore conmebol is the weakest confederation and ofc the strongest. Logically sound (ish), but also obviously bullshit. I don't think the difficulty of qualifying is much related to the strength of the confederation as a whole.

Now Socceroos have beaten Tunisia 1-0, it means 4 out of 5 Asian teams, who qualified (Qatar didn't as host), have won games at this WC. They've defeated a South American powerhouse, a UEFA powerhouse, a decent African team and a decent UEFA team.
Surely the Asian naysayers and Eurosnobs, can see that Asia is improving relative to other federations given performances in the Qatar WC 2022?

+xTotally forgot our win notches up another one for the AFC. Its interesting: this is more or less a WC in Asia. The Asian Confed nations are more at home with the conditions, but most imprtantle are willing to take it to the opposition, and the refs are not giving the 50-50 calls to the Europeans or Sth Americans.

The Asian Confed nations are more at home with the conditions, but most imprtantle are willing to take it to the opposition, and the refs are not giving the 50-50 calls to the Europeans or Sth Americans. It probably helps that Qatar is culturally familiar to Asian teams and it is a bit unfamiliar to some of the other federations. I recall reading when we were first admitted to the Asian Confed how culturally many Aussie players struggled to cope with different Asian customs.

+x+x+xNow Socceroos have beaten Tunisia 1-0, it means 4 out of 5 Asian teams, who qualified (Qatar didn't as host), have won games at this WC. They've defeated a South American powerhouse, a UEFA powerhouse, a decent African team and a decent UEFA team. Surely the Asian naysayers and Eurosnobs, can see that Asia is improving relative to other federations given performances in the Qatar WC 2022? I wonder what Jamie fucking Carragher is saying now, the dumb scouser. What did he say? He said every Asian team will come bottom of their group.

Your right, it looks like the semi finalists this year are all going to be from Asia..... must mean that the FFA coaching accreditation is far outperforming anything else in the world right now.... Happy days. Shut up and sit the fuck down, read the room, AFC are finally competitive. He's not enjoying this cause it doesn't suit his agenda.

Fun Fact: Concacaf teams have failed to score in their last five World Cup matches, managing just five total shots on target in those games

One phenomenon we should probably acknowledge is having had a pretty tough WCQing group by Asian standards has been good long term. It forced us to play another tough Asian Confed knockout game against the UAE, and, then Peru in an intercontinental fixture.
Japan outclassed us at home. Saudi were the better team over the two legs. China forced a draw. I think Oman forced a draw too?
Australia may have played more WCQers to get to Qatar than anybody else. It has certainly created a battle hardened team, tactically savvy team, mentally tough team, who've won some very close, tight encounters.
We've only been thrashed by the current world champs, France.

Japans first half was languid and lacked energy. I think they really underestimated costa rica. Their second half was better, and if they played that way for 90 minutes the cumulative pressure would probably be too muchand they probably score at least a couple. In the end costa rica only needed one chance all game to (probably) knock japan out of the world cup
costa rica have won just 3 of their last 18 world cup games despite making the quarters. They are pretty similar quality to australia over the last dozen years by that metric
