Yes and No

Dont let hype get in the way of ability - England have won 1 WC in there entire history they have always had players at the top level I mean there golden generation flopped never even made a final

Spain 1 WC and 2 Euros always had top players

Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay  all have more WC then the both two nations - you could easily argue Spain and England have the two best leagues in the world but i honestly  couldnt name 5 clubs from Uruguay and i have been a football fan since i was 9

Holland have never won a world cup but they have 3 finals and the Dutch league produces great players but frankly it is not better then the J league

Players wil always go were Money is - we need to make Asian clubs have more lucrative and we need the ACL to compete with the UCL and right now the ACL is not even on the level of Europa - the ACL is such a joke id rather it didnt exist if they are not going to do it properly. The Prize money should be >30m USD for the winner and every team competing should get at least 4m USD

We need to realise Australia and Asia are now intertwined the only way for us to succeed is if the entire confederation improves - this is way i have always been in favor of both Russia and Turkey joining the AFC and why i hate our involvement with NZ and the NZ FA as it hurts the AFC and thus hurts us. (it is also why i hate the salary cap, and 3+1 rule)

adding on to banzai's comments its obvious playing in Europe leagues improves the up and coming player full stop period.
Forgetting winning the Cup I'm talking about player quality, they play CL/Europa/Euro as mentioned, what does that do for the players game going into their NT duty.
Gets them blooded and battle hardenned and used to knock out games.
Dav, nah the Dutch league isn't on par with JL, its better, ranking are rankings and depending which source but Dutch is around 7th JL around 20th and the average stats from top of the league to bottom has quite a gap.
Yer I agree the whole ACL needs a big injection in funds and marketing, it has gained no respect to date.
Clubs need to treat it like they do in Europe for the CL etc, its an out and out got to be in there let alone consolation Europa.

As for being looked upon as a conferation by the usual suspects, this WC it got noticed obviously and where held made it alot more noticeable to the rest of the football world.
What needs to occur is backing it up next WC, not just us but the rest who got those amazing unexpected wins, 3 of us making the R16.
All this talk about Asia becoming a power is pretty premature for me, do it 2/3 Cups in a row then yer you've got on the dance floor, not just this Cup.
Another point about other usual NT's who have either not made it or the regular ones knocked out during group stage and quoted their leagues have gone backwards etcetc, its all about cycles, whilst we live in hope getting on the dance floor more often than not don't you think those who had a bad Cup will re group and be better prepared and perform next Cup correcting the ledger, don't think they'll be left behind.

You have to see other post where I agree with you on Kuol's take down.

Portugal are no way overrated, I think more underrated. They have 3 of the best player in the best team in England, one more a star of the no 5 team in Man U. Add a few more , plus the great man himself.

But did you see Brazil this morning in 1st half, very very scary.

So your kids like mine have 3 teams to follow.

I think mine are Socceroos England then Portugal, though they love Ronaldo, King Ronnie.

BTW I was in Croatia, in Split when Croatia qualified for final in 2018. First time ever in a country that qualified for the final, it was mental, though my English brother in law was not happy & wanted to go back to hotel.

I only watched the mini match but I'm curious to see how Brasil will go against a proper Euro team.
South Korea actually carved out more chances than they should have even before the game was dead

Brazil was already leading 4-0 that's why. Sth Korea have to go all out while Brazil shift down to 2nd gear.

yes mate but x 4, our Roos/floundering Azzuri/Portugal/Croatian running through their veins.......
My boys now older have clamed down on the CR7 train, they just love the full squad now that its pretty damn good and should give the Cup a shake.
Who knows now its getting to the business end whats to become, right now those pesky zillians and frogs look the suspects but you never know.
I sure can't see the poms and sadly Cros go deeper coming up.

haha the Pom bro inlaw -  that would have been a buzz being there then, its very impressive Cros punching above their weight, love it.

Uruguay haven't made the final since 1950 though, surely money wasn't relevant then . Every other world cup has been won by those top leagues + Brazil and Argentina. Even England have improved significantly recently but hopefully continue to bottle it. As others have pointed out we really need to get money into the ACL somehow. Surely the rich Arabs can stop investing in the premier league and invest in Asian football.

Japan are not far off in fact they have come a long way, I think what's really holding them back now is their mentality.

They are technically and now physically too, tactically they can always improve their playing style so that comes down to their coaches maybe they missing a top class coach I dont think the current coach is that good.
Maybe they need a Bielsa more than us, I cant imagine what they will be like if they played in a high pressing system with their already world class technical ability.

And to be fair it was always going to be a tough ask for South Korea against Brazil who look like they will make the final, they looking very strong.
They also need a few more players in the top leagues but they can match it with teams on a technical level quite easily.

Japan had a bit of a weird World Cup. They were very poor early v Germany and it could have easily looked like the Brazil Korea game if Germany took their chances and Japans World Cup is probably over before they score. Having a possession count that low against the top teams requires a lot of luck to win. The reverse then happened against Costa Rica and I thought they were pretty stiff this morning.

I agree with the 2nd part but Uruguay came 4th in 2010 and make the 1/4 finals in 2018 compared to England that came 4th in 2018 but were knocked in the group or round of 16 in every world cup in 1990 (bar Germany)

prior to the 92 the (the existence of the Premier League) would you argue Serie A was the best league in the world.

Obviously we need more players playing in the top leagues of Europe but that would happen natrually if we had 'top leagues' ourselves but it wont ever happen until the ACL had 'real' prize money - J-League is a good example Japan has players heading to Europe for decent fees every season now and actually performing very well, as does Korea.

I have been bagging this shit show of a competition that is the ACL since the day the AL sides started competing in it - the prize money is a joke you literally get 4m for WINNING the ACL WTF is that shit you get almost that much for getting knocked out of the groups in Europa League (no not UCL, the ECL)  (for comparison)

the structure of football is simply too Euro-centric. It actively prevents smaller confederations from ever improving enough to truly challenge the traditional powers.

They keep expanding the world cup to help the other federations and FIFA aren't stopping kids in Australia playing with a ball outside in their spare time.

What a weird comment. Should the big euro leagues send their advertising money to Jeonbuk Motors?

I’m not suggesting anything like that. It is what it is. Europe has all the resources and all the power, and I don’t see it shifting in our lifetimes. Kids can play with the ball all they want here. It’s not gonna change the fact that they face far greater challenges in getting noticed and developing their skills than a kid in France or even bloody Croatia.

It’s just boring. European football really fucking bores me. Even the premier league has become deathly dull. I’d burn it all down and start again. Preferably with salary caps and no petro money.

im not having ago at you - but according to who...you...football is the most watched, participated and love sport in the world

it has more money in it then any other code

there are more professional players then any other sport etc

essential in every metric it is 'successful'  and more successful then any other sport.....

you might not 'like' being a weaker nation/confederation but it suits UEFA just fine - the issue is the Asian confederation needs to 'fix its shit' it has the most money and the large population to pool fans from but it has for a long time under-performed.

China is probably the biggest bottle job despite having billions poured into the CSL the league is still rubbish and the Chinese national team has only ever been to 1 world cup in 2002 in which they lost every game

the positive is we have a LOT we can improve on and could match and one day Surpass UEFA DO NOT under-estimate the potential Asian football has.....the negative is self interest and politics will likely mean we may never reach that potential - Saudi Arabia is a shit nation whe it comes to football but they are spending 200m a season on a last legs Cristiano Ronaldo in which 50 fans and there dog will watch instead of using that money to improve West Asian - the 'short sightedness is insane' instead of building our/their own CR or Messi they blow all the money in the world on a player at the end of his career - i would love CR to play but with 200m you could probably produce 50 top/world class players.

Just Brazil and France

i dont know why so many people are rating England they have by far the 'easiest' run so far - if they beat France then sure they should be in the conversation

I think Asia being underrated is mostly because the US media is a loud voice and continue to overrate the likes of the USMNT, Mexico, Canada etc.

It's clear to me that the AFC is the 4th best confederation in the world. Both clubs and countries on the whole are better than Concacaf.

Africa is a clear 3rd (still) at this moment in time, but the gap is closing between AFC & CAF.

Europe & South America is still way ahead.

Hadn't really thought about this idea since it was mooted about 20 years ago.

As long as there were  very few foreigners playing  for teams in it, like 2 per team, it could lift the standard of  football in the region.

How could an Asian Superleague manifest in what form?

Promo-releg?

Maybe it should be East Asia?

20 team league?

Japan - 2-3 teams - Tokyo - ?
South Korea - 2-3 teams - Seoul and Busan
China - 2-3 teams - a Shanghai team and a Beijing team
India - 2-3 teams - 1 team based in Delhi the other in Chennai
North Korea - 1 team
Australia - 2-3 teams - SFC, Melb City, Brisbane Roar (based on population centres).
Vietnam - 2 teams
Malaysia - 1 team
Indonesia - 1 team
Thailand - 2 teams
Vietnam - 2 teams
Singapore - 1 team

It  could include?
Kiwis (amalgamate Oceania with East Asia) - 1 team.
Pacific Islands team - 1 team

It  could provide a superior pathway to mid- ranked European leagues for Aussie players, and coaches. Essentially ATM, as  an international football entity, Australia is a superior international team in a big tournament context all over the globe, than the national teams of  European countries where most of our players ply their trade in  UEFA. Outside the big UEFA five leagues, and arguably Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium and Turkey, Aussie Socceroo aspirants  would be better off playing in  East Asian Superleague with a 40 match season.

An East Asian Superleague might blast Aussie egg ball codes, and their corporate  mates, and  the hegemony the high profile they currently have in the Aus media out of the water too.

Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, Austria, Greece, Italy, (a dismal failure by failing to qualify for the last 2 World Cups, no longer a current powerhouse), have less globally competitive  national teams than  the Socceroos ATM.

Bottom club from each country in super league to have play off against winner of domestic league of said country

Europe is funding the war not Chelsea football club

Actually maybe? It wouldn’t kill them to spread the wealth around a little. This uber-capitalistic status quo has sucked all the spirit and romance out of the game.

FIFA has been spreading the wealth for 40 years.
The trouble is that a large chunk of it has been into their private pockets.

AFC equal with Africa for third.. someone did a win % breakdown of each confed from the last 20 yrs.. AFC was about equal with Africa

yeh, but would anyone on this board seriously believe that the AFC is on par with Africa for playing talent?
At any one time, the AFC might be able to muster 5 nations who can get a result against decent European teams, but Africa is always able to muster at least 10 at any one time.

Absolutely not, which is why I put CAF ahead of AFC.

Let's put the statistics to one side.

Player V Player, CAF are clear third when it comes to the quality that comes out of that confed. I will admit that a large number of CAF players are developed mostly by UEFA, but still, the talent production is undisputed.

Are you telling me AFC have an equivalent to Salah & Mane? And that's only the beginning...

Son is the only player that comes close.

very much agree when comparing player pool - Son is the only stand out world class player the rest respectfully speaking are great squad players ie the many Japan players in Bundas don't stand out like Son in their Clubs.
Whereas CAF look how many are class players for their Clubs.
I really can't see the point beating the chest AFC is here or there compared to the others.
Until we have a couple of AFC NT's get through to last 8 a couple of Cups NOT just 1 then you can have the discussion.
