Football's governing body FIFA and World Athletics will review the regulations regarding the participation of transgender athletes by the end of the year.

It comes after the swimming governing body FINA voted to restrict the participation of transgender athletes in elite women's competitions. FINA will also institute a committee to work on establishing a third 'open' category for participation in future elite-level competitions.

Fantastic move in my opinion. Hopefully common sense prevails and this is a uniform approach taken by all sports. Age and disability restrictions are based on biological fact, and so too should rules around sex

The fact that this vote passed with more then 75% gives me confidence that there will be some sense in decision making around this issue going forward

Gender is an ideology and should not have any social standing. We shouldn't even be recording it any more than we record sexual preference or religion. Biological sex has a purpose in our society and there will always be segregation in some sections (such as medicine, sport and privacy / security). This need must be recognised and preserved. Not muddied by people who think that its some kind of lifestyle choice

Rules to protect women from playing sport against men are there for a reason. If one male can participate, then all males should be allowed to
