I think he shouldn't be fringe at all. 

He's been in better form than almost anyone in the national team and deserves more than he's been getting.

Him and James Holland easily the most overlooked Aussie players the last decade. Both have excellent CV's well into their now mid thirties. Both had mid career slumps though, came back to A league out of form/fitness where they didnt set the world on fire and have been judged on those short windows ever since despite years of success since.

Of the generation before i'd say Nickey Carle, Joey Didulica (who ended up playing for Croatia), Eddy Bosnar and Sasha Ognenovski were the most overlooked.
